I can see having different hand positions. At work, I use an Apple keyboard and my finger lays on the ESC most of the day for CAD work but at home, right now, on my MacBook pro i'm resting on the home keys.

I always thought a better idea would be to have mechanical keys for ESC and power/Touch id and then have the Touchbar fill the space between them.

Apple took a long time to explain why they are getting rid of the function keys and how outdated they are, but I don't remember them saying anything about why the ESC should be abolished.

And why is the ESC key not left aligned with the key below it? do they think it's easier to reach now?

Yeah, I've had this happen multiple times already.

Also: It'd be nice if people here wouldn't keep throwing out the phrase "troll post" every single time someone has a legitimate problem. The immaturity on here has really skyrocketed as of late.
It can't be a troll post unless 1) the account was created for this thread alone or 2) it's a proven troll account. Otherwise, it's just probably a unique scenario being overly complained about.

It happens often when I CTRL+C and CTRL+V (copy and paste), specially when I do it quickly.

Mind how, as I place my thumb+index over the CTRL+C keys, my pinky reaches out to the ESC area. When you pull that finger motion rapidly, I've hit the ESC button by accident a bunch of times.

Go ahead, run that test on your keyboard yourself.

I may have small hands, but my pinky ends up between tab and the tilde symbol.

+1, have done this a couple of times.

I don't hit the escape key by accident, but what does happen often is that since i use the bottom right corner of the trackpad to right click, my right pinky finger keeps tapping it by accident when i want to do a regular click and it ends up executing a right click. Stupid over sized trackpad

The English teacher wasn't very good, fixed for you. :p
Actually, neither Math or Maths can be argued as correct/incorrect. Both are valid. Math is more usually accepted in U.S. from what I have been told, although don't hold me on that claim.

Sorry, in high school I was learning math, chemestry, English and, you know, things like that...

Where did you go to school? I've never even heard of chemestry.

And math is just the way Americans choose to shorten mathematics and is entirely correct.

You both entirely missed the joke there... Americans use 'Math', English use 'Maths'. It wasn't an argument on grammar, purely that the quote said he studied 'English'... ;)

Do people not know what the bumps on 'F' and 'J' are
for?

I think you're stating the obvious here.

I'm sure for touch typing you are meant to use the right hand for the ctrl/cmd and left hand for the C/V.

I've not been hitting it by accident, but am just getting used to it not being a physical key so my finger just kind of slides on to it meaning I hit it a few times instead of once. But its only day 2 so I figure its just a muscle memory thing.

I think some people are putting too much emphasis on the proper typing positions.

I have hit the esc key many times by accident, but not while typing. From years of habit, my hand is placed in that area when I am simply browsing and reading my screen without the need to type. Maybe that is wrong, maybe it is irrelevant, but the point is that with a regular push key there was no problem at all. With a touch key, of course, the slightest brushing over the "button" makes it register an event that was not intended by the user.

My case is almost always with Safari exiting full screen mode due to me touching the esc key while I am not typing, simply reading what is on screen. My right hand is on my touchpad, and my left hand rests towards the upper left corner of my keyboard.

It's definitely an annoyance for me and apparently for other people as well. "You're doing it wrong," is not actually a relevant issue for something that was not an annoyance for over 30 years for me and now it is.

Many have commented on the proper typing positions based on the photos that have been posted. So it does matter in certain circumstances. But obviously the new "ESC key" takes a lot of getting used to.

This is the most annoying issue with the touchbar.
I never realized i rested my fingers on that area without actually pressing any keys... now I press the Esc key all the time it's so frustrating.
I also noticed that while you are pressing a key on the keyboard the touchbar does not accept any input...

Is anybody else hitting the Touch Bar ESC button by mistake while typing with your left hand's pinky finger?

The problem is this: since the button has no physical weight, the sightliest caress with your pinky finger triggers the ESC button, and therefore exiting whatever input form you might be filling in at that moment. As a result, I have had to type the whole thing again quite a few times already. It is driving me nuts!

Is anyone else hitting the ESC button by mistake?

Yes! This is happening to me ALL THE TIME.

My hand is tilted that way after decades of using Apple keyboards to a) do command shortcuts like Command-C and b) I use ESC frequently in vim and also in OS to exit dialogues or full screen video etc.

On a "normal" keyboard my finger used to rest naturally on that key. Now, of course it can't. It's a total pain in the ass. Thanks for the chance to rant a little about this #firstworldproblem

Me too. You can change most things in better touch tool but you can't get rid of the escape key, only replace it with an "x" that takes you to the generic touchbar (with escape key)

I had the same problem. I ended up returning my tbMBP primarily because of really bad battery life. However this happened to me all the time - just figured I would adjust. Probably a symptom of not learning to type properly.

When the physical escape button was there, you could rest your finger on it as long as you didnt press. Made me realize that force touch on the TB would be nice. e.g. some sort of pressure threshold to activate.

Exactly

Resting a finger on the Esc key and leaving my hand in a comfortable shape (not flat, but not curled into a ball, either, just a neutral-ish arc) puts my thumb on the "D" row of keys.

Seriously, guys.

I should try watching other people type to see what's happened to typing skills these days, but I'd probably look like a creeper.
