MAC OS, downloaded via App store during one of their sales last year. I guess the bootcamp windows version would have been faster.

Yeah, running any games on the Mac side is usually 25-40% slower. If you get a chance, possibly try to run to some other games on windows.

My 2015 struggles with both KOTOR games and GTA: San Andreas from App Store. Gave up gaming aspirations then and there.

I really suggest running bootcamp for any game. Apple hasn't optimized anything for the App store. I was even able to run Ark Survival on low even on my Macbook at 20fps and 1280x800. I feel like the 515 may be able to handle more mayeb at 30-40fps.

Nah, not worth the trouble and price of Windows to play games from 15 years ago. I knew the MacBook wasn't a powerhouse when I switched.

Swell, notebookcheck.de has their review of the m3 version up:

Great!
Except I got an E in German, so I can't understand ****.
Think they say something about League of Legends making the GPU throttle down to 700 MHz and the CPU down to 1.7 GHz.
...I think.

Their English translation should be up pretty soon.
They are usually pretty thorough, should give us good info regarding throttling and GPU performance.

I wonder if the 1.7 Ghz in League of Legends is due to throttling or rather the CPU didn't need more? Might be due to power constraints I guess because the temperature was not that high during that test.

All in all it seems the m3/m5/m7 all throttle down towards around 2 Ghz during full CPU load, so the question is if there are any differences noticable between them when throttling.

yes and im wondering if the cpu is working at 1.7 ghz on the battery ? or maybe we get some more while connected to the power

They say, LoL will run at 1440x900 at constant 50 fps on high details, but massive gpu usage, as in the tested last boss fight (or end fight, don't know anything about LoL) made the cpu/gpu throttle down .. But with throttled CPU/GPU there were at least constant 30fps, so still no lag.

@Serban: The CPU/GPU will preserve all its power in Battery Mode

That's quite impressive!

Any idea how the 2015 compared?

Anyone worried about the constant heat strain on the CPU/GPU when gaming? Wouldn't it shorten it's life?

Nope. The CPU is designed to work under those conditions. I've never seen a CPU on a computer go bad. You're battery will wear out and screen will die long before the CPU has any issues.

Coolio...I just thought I remember hearing somewhere (lol) awhile back that high temps can possibly affect thermal couplings/paste...I really don't know, just been something I've been curious about. Thoughts?

If the thermal paste isn't applied properly, then high temperatures can damage a CPU for sure. But that is more of an issue with custom builds by amateurs. Any decent manufacturer should never have thermal paste issues.

Furthermore, I am 99% sure that the passively cooled MacBook processors do not utilize thermal paste, so this is a non issue.

You can't really damage your CPU as it will throttle itself as soon as it reaches uncomfortable temperatures

If a games pushes the CPU/GPU too hard, it will just make the game unplayable rather than burning itself

My m7 was delivered yesterday, haven't had a chance to do proper gaming tests yet. Will do it later this week. Note: I played all games under OSX.

I had the time to test three games.

I started out with Minecraft, the internal display scaled to 1440x900 - that's the resolution Minecraft played in fullscreen. I got about 40-50 fps, after a while the fps dropped down to 20-30 (I guess it was throttling) and then back up to 40-50. It was fully playable and the throttling didn't last long. I will try it at lower resolutions later on. 1440x900 was fully playable for me though.

I had a stab at Left 4 Dead 2. I played around with both resolution settings and graphics settings (shaders, shadows, model detail etc) - via the l4d2 console I showed the fps, but it fluctuated a lot, so hard to tell what I was getting. The game however felt pretty smooth at 1172x720, all shaders, details at low. Did notice some stuttering here and there. Will test more later this week.

I played Syndicate(1993) in dosbox. In windowed mode it was unplayable, the mouse cursor lagged, everything played in extreme slow motion. Turned on fullscreen mode and suddenly the game ran at full speed, no stutter.

I have Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, World of Warcraft to test later on + quite a lot of games via Steam.

Great stuff. MORE! :D
If you're planning on setting up Bootcamp, we would love to hear how games run there as well.

Yes, I'll do some proper testing later this week or over the weekend. I had a ton of stuff to install and tweak yesterday. I downloaded Intels Power Gadget monitor - quite interesting to see the temperature rise to 80-90 C during heavy load and then fall back real quick at idle - all without a fan. Quite impressive.

Regarding Bootcamp - I don't mind setting it up, but I have no Windows license and I don't game that much - it's a bit pricey.

I forgot to mention I also tested Chocolate Doom (a Doom source port) and it ran at full speed. I would be worried if it didn't.

Regarding Dosbox, it was interesting to see the bad performance in windowed mode. When playing Minecraft in windowed mode it ran just fine. I guess the issue is related to the way Dosbox renders in windowed mode.

Other than games I used the computer as I normally would. This is my only computer mind you. Very happy with the performance. I connected it to a Dell U2515H and it ran fine in extended desktop. I noticed some stutter here and there - mostly related to visual effects. Nothing too bad considering it is so tiny and fanless.

You probably know this, but for those who don't:

With regards to Windows 10, you can get a free 90 day trial for Windows 10 Enterprise by goinge here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/eva...-10-enterprise?OCID=WIP_r_Win10_Body_Ent_Eval

Windows 10 Pro is kind of pricey, the cheapest I've seen in around $50 on places like [REMOVED] or [REMOVED].

EDIT: mentions of online stores removed in case their practices are less than entirely legal.

Just got my rMB today.

I'll be able to test games (D3, SC2, WoW, Hearthstone, Serious Sam 3 and few other games, all of these will be done under OS X, so keep that in mind) once when I'm finished restoring from Time Machine and setting up everything else.

Loving that more people are getting their Macbooks!

Oh! Oh! Someone try XCOM!
...and Fallout New Vegas!
...and Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes/V!
