H! I'm planning to buy a 2017 MBP Touch Bar 15. I heard many issues with 2016 MBP Touch Bar 15, especially is a keyboard. Did Apple fix the keyboard issue with 2017 MBP Touch Bar 15? Could anybody give me any suggestions? Thanks!

If Apple hasn't fixed the keyboard issue yet, I may go either 2015 MacBook Pro 15" or 2017 MacBook Air 13". Both laptops have a better keyboard.

so i posted a similar topic earlier this week and someone told me they did some minor updates to remedy the keyboard issue but it was not officially announced by apple. also that some people have actually mentioned that the keyboard on the 2017 versus 2016 feels better but this might be a placebo effect

What apple officially announced is that they now use the second generation butterfly keyboard with nothing else in details if that helps

What do you mean by an issue and fixed?
Some people have had a few issues with their keyboards sticking this is not as widespread as these forums and the internet in general would have you believe, apple sell millions of MacBook pros most peoples machine is fine.

Many people hate the new keyboards with low travel and a distinctly clicky sound, that's just a matter of preference not an issue however, many people love them.

Why would you get a 2 year old machine over what you want, for a few bits of moaning on the internet?? These are highly rated machines with fantastic reviews in the main, get one, try it ou,t at this time of year you have until Jan the 8th to return it if it doesn't work out if I remember rightly.

Exactly! Why get a two year old machine! There is some group-think here where people convince themselves that they should buy old technology. Why not get an Apple II?

I have the 2017 MBP, and I love the keyboard. It’s so much improved from the 1st gen on the MacBook. There may or may not be a quality issue, but anecdotal evidence is not evidence.

Sorry but this is wrong information. The only Apple product that has an official second generation butterfly keyboard is the Macbook, which had the first generation keyboard when released in 2015. There is only one keyboard for the 2016/2017 Macbook Pro, the teardown proved it:

https://www.macrumors.com/2017/06/09/teardowns-show-new-macbook-unchanged-design/

Also as above don't believe everything you read about the 2016/17 MBP having a terrible keyboard, mine works just fine.

I've had a terrible experience with the 2017 mbp including teh keybaord which keeps failing even after being repaired/replaced.

Here's video evidence.

Apple Genius staff at Covent Garden admitted they've never had such a huge problem with macbooks and that the "repair rooms are full of them".

Use your own judgement.

The 2017s appear to have fewer issues than the 2016s - why this is one can't say definitively, but some have speculated that it has been minute modifications, where others have theorized that the lower heat production of more efficient processors may play a role, and others have suggested that this is not the case at all and rather there are fewer 2017-related issues simply because the 2017 models did not have the surge sales that the 2016s did (i.e., the incidence rate is not changed, but the total N for the 2017 is smaller than the total N for the 2016). However, hard number on the commonality of issues we lack - Apple, like virtually all Makers, doesn't make this information publicly accessible.
  1. Based on observations alone, the number of Users experiencing issues is arguably not insignificant - in other words, more Users appear to be experiencing issues with the newer design than the older, and the keyboard durability has room for improvement on future iterations
  2. It is a known fact that a consumer who experiences a negative issue is significantly more likely to report on their issue than a consumer who has experienced an issue of equally positive weight - in other words, for every User that reports a negative experience with the keyboard, there could be an unknown number (2? 10? 100? 1,000?) of Users with positive experiences that did NOT report their positive experience
My suggestion is to purchase whichever computer you like the most. If you like the 2017, buy it, enjoy the nice system that it is, and invest in AC+ for reasons that go beyond just the keyboard IMHO.

There definitely seems to be less "chatter" about people having issues. I hope its an evolving issue, where Apple is continually tweaking the design to improve the quality. I'm still holding out for the 2018 model, and hoping we see a sturdier design

I'm waiting to see what the 2018 model brings in regards to:

- better keyboard travel and reliability
- support for 32 GBs DDR4 of RAM - most likely optional.
- 15 inch model with Intel only graphics preferably with the new AMD chip for a little bit more power.
- Touch bar in addition to traditional function keys.
- 512 GBs default SSD storage
- Price drop to $1999

The retina line was introduced in 2012. I didn't buy my first MacBook Pro until 2015, which would have been the 4th generation.

We are just on the second generation of the new MacBook Pro's. I probably will wait until 2019 to really see things sorted out.

By 2019 or 2020, Apple is likely to bring features like Super OLED and new polarizing technology to the MacBook Pro, which is gonna be 2012 and 2016 all over again.

In the mean time, my 2015 is running like a champ and I am just in no need to upgrade for a good while. Oh, I almost forgot, I need to take advantage of the peeling lamination.

Sorry but you're dreaming. The current Macbook Pro design is 12 months old. The previous unibody design lasted the best part of a decade with only minor revisions. There is not going to be any of the things you mention above next year, at best it will be incremental CPU and GPU bumps. Apple don't invest millions of dollars in designing new form factors only to retire them after 18 months. In fact I can't think of a single Apple laptop form factor that has lasted less than five years, apart from very minor cosmetic changes.

I've had the 2016 MacBook Pro's since launch (started with nTB 13" then sold it for a 15") and neither of the systems ever gave me any hardware or major software issues from the beginning. The 13" sometimes made a random popping noise when the speakers were not playing but otherwise it was solid.

I've had my 15" since June and it's been great so far. A few times I noticed the touch bar would become unresponsive but switching to another app solved that problem. No noticeable keyboard issues on either laptop though.

there are a lot of complaints on this board

i think it's an availability heuristic

the keyboard is astonishingly great

i've extensively used 2016 & 2017 and they're both amazing

I’ve had an issue with my keyboard and Apple fixed it under warranty. I would rather take that chance then buy a 2y old machine!

And some people have had "issues" with anyone saying anything remotely negative about their beloved rap..., I mean company, apple.

Any updates on this. Has any new 2017 owner encountered the same problem?
2017 keyboards are a hair better but read the forums. Yes. It's still an issue.
So is the ridiculous trackpad size.

Out of curiosity, do you own one of the newer MBP’s?

I haven’t run into issues on my 2017 15” I bought last June, but it isn’t my 8 hour a day computer. It’s my nights and weekends computer to work on programming and other hobbies like music and art.

I have a 2016 15" and my trackpad got broken so Apple replaced the whole bottom case assembly (case, touchbar, keyboard, trackpad, battery) with the 2017 version.

Most certain this was not a mistake.

Do you happen to have a keyboard protector or would this even help?

I don’t have a keyboard protector on mine. Clearance is tight; I imagine any kind of covering would put pressure on the display when the MBP is closed or keep it from closing completely.

I have the uppercase keyboard protector which may be the thinnest in the market. So far, no marks on the screen due to the TPU cover.
