Incorrect information regarding first car to support this option.

BMW cars with iDrive 5.0 already support Wireless Apple Car Play. All 2 series, 3 series, 4 series, M3, M4 cars built since July 2016 have 'Wireless Apple Car Play'.

My M4 (built Aug 2016) has it... and it does not require any cable, all works via Bluetooth.

Here is another article from Mac Rumors stating the same.

Wish my 2017 i3 with 5.0 iDrive had CarPlay :(

Wireless CarPlay is working in your M4 over Bluetooth? Interesting. I thought it needed wifi for that.

I only wish the new 540i was available last November. Stuck with my X5 for another 2 years.

Totally agree. Bluetooth will sound bad through the cars upgraded speaker system PLUS it's great to have the phone charging.

I never understood this argument. Bluetooth sounds just fine in every audio application I've used it for. I use Bluetooth audio in my car and I hear no noticeable sound quality difference vs plugged in. And yes, I do have an upgraded "premium" audio system in my car. My preferred setup is bluetooth for the data connection (I don't have CarPlay) and plugging into a standalone 12v plug car charger for power. The USB ports in most cars don't supply enough amperage to quickly charge a phone anyways.

Cue the audiophiles saying they can of course hear the difference because their hearing is so acute.

I don't understand most people's obsession with wireless everything. What is so wrong about a cable? Especially in a vehicle, where you're gonna want to charge your phone anyway.
I have CarPlay in my VW GLI and using the cable is a pain. Beyond having to connect and disconnect it, which seems to cause it to lock-up occasionally and require rebooting the radio, I the cable gets wrapped around the shifter, caught on a jacket button that sends the phone flying out of the car when you get out, etc. Wireless, assuming that the audio quality would be suitable, would be very beneficial. I only wonder if my GLI will support wireless CarPlay with a firmware upgrade or if it will be a whole new entertainment system.

For short trips, you might not want the hassle of getting your phone out and connecting the cable. But where wireless will really shine is when cars support wireless charging also. The phone can stay in your pocket or purse and still provide media to Car Play, while also charging.

For some reason I don't see VW adding wireless as an infotainment software upgrade - that's just my intuition. Just be happy you have CarPlay at all, I missed it by a model year with my GTI! I have the smaller screened, slower 2015 head unit. My sig other's 2017 Jetta has it and I can vouch for the occasional lock-up. It seems to help to not plug the phone in until the infotainment system is already on after you've started the car.

Are humans of today so lazy that they can't even plug in a damn cord??? Plus surely, that would be more software bugs??? I can't even get out of my messages on my iPhone SE after the ios10 update!
You realise it isn't an either/or thing don't you? Why not have both?

CarPlay is a fail already in my book.

"It's so fragmented with all the systems, we'll make one OS that all car manufacturers can use so it's constantly up to date instead of being obsolete within a year or two".

So what's the FIRST thing they do? Release a version that runs via cable only, and if you want new features like wireless, you need to get a new car. Great job guys, you solved it! o_O

There are many reports that iPhone 7 is not working with BMW Bluetooth. Have you tried it with an iPhone 7?

Das Bimmer is an overpriced piece of schizer for the Übermensch. I hope Honda and Toyota offer this as well.

I've tweaked the wording in the post a bit, but that info comes directly from BMW's press materials. I'm a bit confused because I can't find documentation that confirms wireless CarPlay support is built into all cars with iDrive 5.0. Guess what BMW's saying is different here is "fully wireless"?

This is correct, my 2017 3-Series built in July of 2016 has Wireless CarPlay.

I just test drove a 2017 X5 last weekend with completely wireless CarPlay and it was amazing.

... So as many others have said, the 5 series is not the first car to have it or the only one.

I'm also confused by BMW's comment. CarPlay over BT is available on all the 2017 model year BMWs with iDrive 5.0. You can see videos of it in operation on YouTube. Here are a couple examples.

Edit: Looks like CarPlay is not available on the i3 or i8 for some reason.

Nice choice of car, beautiful machine. Visited the Nordschleife yet? ;)

One thing is for certain, it's definitely not all cars with iDrive 5.0. My 2017 BMW i3 has iDrive 5.0 but no CarPlay.

I'm more curious on the wireless things. Could have sworn that when wireless CarPlay was announced that it would require a wifi link in the car.

Wireless CarPlay is already available on BMW M2s with manufacturing dates of August 2016 and later (mine included). No need to wait for the new 5-Series to try it out.

Wireless CarPlay connects to iDrive 5.0-equipped cars through both Bluetooth and WiFi simultaneously. If you're home and connected to your home WiFi network, for example, your iPhone will disconnect from your home network and connect to iDrive via WiFi (remaining connected to the cellular network, of course).

Also, note that not all iDrive 5.0-equipped cars support CarPlay. The first BMWs to support CarPlay were manufactured in August 2016 and utilize newer hardware that enables this feature.

Yeah... for some odd reason CarPlay is not available on either the i3 or the i8 even with iDrive 5.0.

If you look at those videos I posted a couple posts up, it seems to be working over BT.
