I noticed this when I got my 2019 iMac. I thought it was just the Macs with T2 that were missing the chime. I'll have to try this.

I liked the chime because it was one of the few things that stayed the same for the whole time I used Macs. It also was useful for POST, good aid in troubleshooting. I do understand why some people found it annoying, and perhaps there should've been an option in System Preferences to turn it off. You actually always could, but you had to mute the computer before turning off.
 
Thanks tarsi's - It looks as though they did indeed kill it from the 2017 iMac as well. Always liked the chime to let me know all is well on a restart or boot up.

RIP Glorious Mac chime!!

i would be happy to not have on my 2011 one... always disturbing
