Well I wouldn't consider a dual booting user a "normie". I was referring to the fact that a Joe average user probably never shuts down his Mac in the same way he never shuts down his iPhone, thus never has the chance to be bothered by the chime.

Either way, the chime is important indicator of boot confirmation for dual booters, taking it out is a negative in that case.
Not a reasonable comparison. There is no functional reason to shut down iPhones, but dual booting with Windows, I would say, is a fairly ‘normal’ thing to do on iMacs. Whatever ‘normal’ means!
The chime should be at least an option.

We are on the same page then, only that you take the chime's importance even further.

As with most things Apple nowadays, they love to prematurely take away features that are useful for some if not most.

Eh, dual booting?

I shut my iMac down every night. I guess it's mostly habit, but my husband doesn't like things left on if they can be switched off.

I'm still waiting for a reason to have Windows on my Mac.

I can’t give you any reason why you should have Windows on your Mac. Everyone has different requirements.
However, I’ll give you 2 (out of many) why I have Windows:
1) Sage. The industry standard package that we run our business accounts on, and
2) DCS. Flight combat sim.
The simple reason why people use Windows on their Mac is because, sadly, not all software is available on macOS.
As I said, we all have different requirements.

Sure, Apple could have kept the startup chord from a sense of tradition, but it's unnecessary as a practical matter.

Like the hood ornament on a Mercedes, or the embroidered initials on a Louis Vuitton. Nobody needs them. Who cares about losing a little more customer loyalty.

Yeah, I think "a little more" just about sums it up. This thread was started in June 2017 and 11 months later it's barely into its third page. This much disappointment is going to really hurt Apple to the core.

For the sake of a good quibble, the hood ornament and the initials on a handbag are both public symbols of affluence that people can display all day long. Just how many impressionable strangers are around when we startup our Macs in the morning? Too bad there isn't a big, fat Apple icon on screen while Macs start up, or a prominent Apple logo somewhere on the computer's case.

I think that ball was always there since Yosmite.
It bullies me:
- in my own applications written in JAVA,
- in bought 3rd party applications,
- AND in any application that is part of High Sierra.
It just seems that task switching has a bad bug in macOS.
Could it be the handling of those 4 cores?
;JOOP!

It may just be that others reading the thread, while disappointed, just don't have anything more to add. I've just found it, having just had to replace my iMac, and noticed an absence of chime… No, it' hasn't ruined my day, but I'm disappointed enough to Google it. And again, why couldn't they have left it in, at least as an option, as with the MBP?

It keeps people's mind off all the other issues with the new Macs :).

They killed the chime, they killed the AirPort Time Capsule, they killed MacOS Server. All things that once made the Mac great...

Aw. I love the Mac chime. Ever since I first started using the Mac Plus in my 7th grade "Tech Ed" classes, I have loved that Macs set themselves apart by having that neat little chime. This iMac, my 2009 edition, has that chime, and I get to hear it every morning when I first power on my computer, and I love it. It's just a nice little bit of uniqueness and comfort. Why would Apple remove yet one more difference between themselves and the run-of-the-mill PC? Why would "Think Different" want to look, sound, and behave exactly like the other guys?

I used to comment, years ago, that the internet wasn't as much fun anymore because websites had started to streamline themselves to the point where they all generally looked the same. Variety is the spice of life. Apple should embrace its differences, extol its uniqueness, not cover it up.

this terminal command brought back the startup chime on my 2017 iMac:

sudo nvram StartupMute=%00

Hi mikeboss,

That command works like a charm on my 2019 i9 iMac...the Startup Chime is back!!! Thanks for posting the information! :) Do you know the command to turn it back off for those who, um, wish to remain silent? Ha!

:)

Thank you again! I clearly need to familiarize myself better with the command line tools! :)

Stickie to self:

Enable Startup Chime: sudo nvram StartupMute=%00
Disable Startup Chime: sudo nvram -d StartupMute
