My 2016 Macbook scored 4680/15501 in GB4. I'm curious to see how that compares to the highest BTO 2017 model.

I don't see any real benefit to upgrading from my mid-2014 as the 32-bit and 64-bit numbers are better than current models (comparing my 2.8GHz i7 to the newer 2.9GHz i7). I hope the high end builds are better.

Yes i just checked mine as well. Either beats some scores or not far off others. My computer is almost 4 years old. I haven't upgraded because there has been no significant advancement.

Meanwhile my mid2014 retina 13" gets 3500 single core... and the 2017 15" is 4200? Honestly not that impressed with Intel

I'm not sure it's really Intel. It's more physics and priorities (and architecture). The days of massive performance gains each generation are over, at least until we find better methods of distributing performance across many cores. Also, the priority has been shifted from performance (as most people don't need big gains anymore) to power consumption.

Seems like same ol. Most model bumps are 12-15%. Same with iMacs, give or take a few points.
Up To 20% is hopeful IMO

I bought a 13" base model on sale for 1350.00 last February. Quite happy with it. My first MacBook laptop. Have an older Acer from 2005, maxed out it's CPU beats it in speed, but take in to account power usage, 24Watts on the Cpu of the Acer I believe, and only 14watts on the MacBook Pro. (Battery life!) Then take in the new PCIe for the SSD to be 1.GB per second data transfer, with 40Gb per second usb-c/thunderbolt 3 speed data transfer, and an OS that whips Window's, and does it with a 2.0Ghz boost to 3.1Ghz dual-core CPU with great battery, screen, speakers, touchpad, keyboard, and amazing build quality! There's some magic in there, but it has it's flaws. Some things I've heard cut out the wifi, and the first batches shipped had dead keys and other issues with them, thought I might have a problem at first. But it worked it self out.

For what I want this could only be better with 16GB of faster RAM from the touch bar models, and the i7-7600U that is better as a dual-core 2.5 boost to 4.0GHZ!!! Or maybe a quad-core since it's only a 1500.00 laptop in 2016-17, like the high end 15" pro, why not make a blazing quad-core for the 13" model? Didn't we already over pay for it, now why not force us to sell them and buy a real premium laptop.

Hi guys! So my cousin is selling me his 2016 MBP 2.7 512ssd 455pro for $1500. Should I:

1. Just spend that money and get a 2017 MBP with similar specs?
2. Is it possible to change out the GPU on this? I was looking at the breakdown on iFixit and it looked like the 455 was a removable socket.

thanks!

That sounds like a really good deal. IIRC that was the high-end base that retailed for $2800. No the GPU is not replaceable.

You are saving $1300 so that is a great deal, but........ If you ever want to drive a 4K display there is a very significant difference on the video card between that machine to the 2017 $2799 machine. In fact I would classify it as a deal breaker if you do need 4K support.

i don't know if it matters he bought apple care for like $300 also. But yeah that's something to think about. I don't think i'll ever use 4k because the only montiors I use are 30" that's 16:10 and it's 2560x1600.

Would I need 4k if I try to plug it in by usb-c to hdmi 2.0 on my tv to play a movie file?

Yeah, I don't normally care about these things and I really do like my machine, which I needed in January, but I do feel up to 20% screwed.

IIRC, Intel said the difference is supposed to be in power consumption, not performance.

My 2014 MacBook Pro clocks over 15000 on Geekbench... 16gigs ram and SSD drive...

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), 2.3GHz
Geekbench 4.1, 64BIT

Single core: 4137
Multi core: 14511

No need for any change and yes, I have all ports INSIDE (USB3 (A), HDMI, card reader etc...)

So I have an Late 2013 MBP that I maxed out at time of purchase (processor, ram, SDD) - GeekBench has be sitting around 4156 single core, 13742 multi core scores - did Apple take a major step back in that my 4 year old laptop is faster than their top of the line 2016 MBP? - Am I missing something?

Faster CPU != More Efficient Workflow.

There are several other factors, major factor after CPU is disk transfer speed. This is blazing fast on 2016+ notebooks.

Pretty sure the 2016 MBP will beat any 2013 MBP even in pure CPU performance. My previous MBP was a late 2013 15” Model which was not quite maxed out but wasn’t far off and my 2016 15” is significantly quicker in all ways, especially in SSD performance where it is massively faster. Can you say what the exact specs of your MBP are and whether you are using 64 or 32 bit geekbench?

why? isn't suppose to drive 2 LG UltraFine 5K monitor? I guess it should not have have any issue with 4k monitor

Yeah, tbh my Quad i7 mini does sound a bit like a hairdryer when pushed.
Still the best bang for buck machine ever sold by Apple thou :)

I have the 2012 'last of the quad core Mac minis', and it's the 2.3 not 2.6, and the heat and noise it gives off (only) under duress is horrific, although works consistently. It's also maxed out with 16gb ram and 1tb ssd, to reduce heat and noise and speed up everything.
Best pc I ever bought.
