Which would you choose

1. 2017 15 inch base macbook pro 256 hard drive 16 gb ram

2. 2018 13 inch base macbook pro 256 hard drive 8 gb ram

Is the 2018 upgrade to the keyboard, True Tone, and quad core in the 13 inch work it over a 2017 15 inch? Regarding the keyboard has the 2018 revision solved the problems?

This really would depend on what you need the computer for.

Personally, I tried the 13, went 15 went back to 13 and sent my 13 back for a 15 a few years back. Now I can never imagine not living without the screen real estate of a 15 inch MacBook Pro.

thats a lot of experience going back and forth. was screen size the sole reason you settled on the 15 inch?

I wrestled with this decision as well and owned both the 13" and 15" 2018 models. Decided to keep the 15" after years of using a 13". I made a list of pros and cons and realized that literally the only thing in favor of the 13" model is portability / form factor.

Meanwhile, the 15" wins in:

Screen size
Battery life
Speakers
dGPU
Faster RAM
6 cores

Also, after 3 weeks of using the 15", it just doesn't feel that big anymore. The difference in portability for me is almost meaningless, as there hasn't been a single time when the size of the laptop prevented me from using it (and I carry it around NYC in a backpack everyday). Very happy with my decision and hope this is helpful!

did 2018 improve battery life?

Of the two, 13”.
It would be close, but I value portability and a working keyboard.

has it been determined that 2018 keyboard is more reliable?

Reliability might be too early to comment upon, but the general consensus on the forums here seems to be that this one definitely feels better than the previous two.

Both are quad core, so it boils down to form factor. For me the other deciding factor is the 2018 model has a next gen keyboard that might show itself more durable, so for that reason I'd opt for the 13" model.

The 15 also has a dgpu (555 since it is 256gb base) and more RAM. 16GB standard is a nice bonus for the 15” models.

Screen size/need for portability should be the primary factors though. I haul my 2017 15” all over the place though without any problems. If I had a choice between my 2017 15” vs a 2018 13” then I would go with the 15” as 13” feels a bit too cramped for me.

You only notice True Tone when you turn it off really, if it’s not something you’ve ever had it’s not something you’ll really miss.

With that being said, unless you really need the screen real estate or you’re doing GPU intensive tasks, there’s very little reason to choose a 2017 15” over a 2018 13”. Performance will be similar with the 13” actually having the better processor of the two. I can’t say whether the keyboard is fixed or not but iFixit did a stress test and this year’s model held up a lot better than last year’s. Only time will tell though.

The 13” will actually feel smoother in day to day tasks too because the iGPU is what handles those animations and the iGPU on the 13” is better than the one in the 15”. Not to mention that unless you actually need a dGPU, it will only be an extra component in your computer heating it up, draining its battery and being susceptible to failure.

The pprtability is a lot better too, you barely feel it in your bag. The 15” is far from being a big laptop but if you can have the same performance on a smaller chassis then you’ll be increasing tge amount of places you can use your computer in.

In my opinion, if you have the chance, bump up the RAM on the 13” and you’ll have a better purchase on your hands than the last years model.

good points

interesting results. with the 13 inch so far ahead, this years improves to the processor (4 cores) etc must make a difference in peoples minds.

2017 15" all day!

If you just wanna surf the web then the 13" is fine and you maybe better off with a cheaper iPad, but if you wanna do work, the 15" is the one to go for.

I see this line of reasoning time to time and tend to disagree. buy the best computer you can then keep it until it gets slow.

I think spending £6200 on the best Macbook Pro (lots of people can afford it including myself) to only do basic tasks like surf the Internet is madness. It's like spending £100k on a sports car and never going over 30mph with it.

Cars last a lot longer than electronics

If both new, 2017 15 looks like a better value for money. It comes with a 4 year keyboard warranty.

has it been determined that 2018 keyboard is more reliable?

The guy that wrote BetterTouchTool wrote on twitter that he already had a keyboard problem with 2018 model (and multiple with 2016).

I am a diehard still holding onto the last of the 17" MBPs (late 2011), though I'll have to give it up to run Mojave when I find that necessary. I have used it in economy airplane seats and have carried it through five continents. I can't imagine going down to a 13" screen for my usage patterns, though that is a function of what a person uses his/her computer for. For mine, if this were my choice, it would be a no-brainer.

That said, are there any 13" MBPs you can borrow to see how that size really works for you in practice, as opposed to looking at it in a store and trying to guess?
