this really upsets me, i just bought a 2016 lancer, their top tier car and nothing about carplay was mentioned

2016 Hyundai Accent, $14.5K, 100K/10YR warranty. A little more money but am a firm believer in "you get what you pay for". After 3 blown engines in Mitsushitty Montero, I'll never buy another. Like others, I didn't even know they still made cars!

It does appear to have some very low ratings...

You can all mock the 'Mitsubishi Mirage' dated looks (it's more 2007 than 2017) however ... choosing Apple's dated 2007-style IOS was a styling genius choice!

Combining the garish colours and the rounded, plain style of the car with the plain, rounded style and garish colours of CarPlay suddenly makes passé ... the new de rigeur, darling! To me, this is shouting "Look at me! Look at me! I'm all done with fashion!"

Function is where it's at - stuff what the neighbours think. It might look like a set of bargain basement wheels to the layman .... but what do laymen, know eh readers?
("Nothing. That's why they're called laymen"-MR Ed.)

Oh. Yeah. I never thought about that. Bladdy 'ell. What have I done?. I've just gawn an' remortgaged the 'ouse and sold the Lamborghini to buy one o' these! Just wait til' my missus finds aht. She's gonna kill me!

I've had CarPlay in my Peugeot 207 for several months now. I went for the Pioneer SPH-DA 120. I love it. It enables me to listen to all the UK radio stations whilst driving around the south of France (cant stand the OTT French stations) Apple maps I find to be fine, its not let me down yet. Siri works well most of the time. I love having my messages read to me and speaking my reply. The phone works great. Driving around daily using Tunein radio and with Apple maps navigating uses very little data, in fact I am changing my contract to a cheaper one because I just don't need 7GB a month, 2GB would probably be enough. OK so more apps would be nice, but its a new thing so I'm sure they will come. Bluetooth doesn't bother me because I prefer to have my iPhone connected and charging. Charging BTW is a lot faster in the car than in the house.

I think Carplay will really take off in 2016. For me its the best invention for the car since the wheel ;)

I have an AppRadio also. Like it but it will suck the second they release a new model in January. Expect to get no more updates to yours. That means no more compatibility as soon as Apple updates things on iOS. Pioneer makes great stuff but they're horrid at support and end it for existing products the second they announce a new one. The AppRadio 3 wasn't even supported for a full year before they stopped releasing updates to fix issues.

I really want Google Maps on Car Play as an option.

Does anyone know how CarPlay apps work? Can Google create an app if they wanted to, or does Apple only allow certain partners to develop CarPlay apps?

Apple must deem the app acceptable to CarPlay requirements and allow it. These apps have to be acceptable for in-car use. That means limiting distractions (Waze would never work as it requires constant inputs). There's a reason we haven't seen many added since CarPlay was first announced. It's also just a pet project at this point.

What's with the hate for the Mitsubishi Mirage? Can anyone else show a better-looking new car that costs $13,000 and comes with a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty?

my kia soul isnt the best looking car ive ever owned but it looks a heck of a lot better than that

Mitsubishi has announced that the 2017 Mirage will feature both CarPlay and Android Auto, becoming the first Mitsubishi vehicle in the U.S. to support Apple's in-dash system. The new subcompact hatchback, introduced at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show.
A 2017 model is introduced in 2015? What's next? A 2023 model introduced in 2016?

Do people actually buy Mitsubishi vehicles?

I'm so perplexed by this.
Mitsubishi is one of the brands that does well internationally, not much in the US, they were predicted to exit us market in 2015, but they survived. Change of direction? Or just kicking the can further?

I actually kind of like the Kia Soul look. It starts at over $15,000 though. So that extra $2,000 (or 15% more) buys you quite a bit more car.

Aaaaah Mitsubishi, a car company they predict will be out of business in the US within 10 years.
The USA is not the only market in the world you know. I know that this is US Centric site but US tastes are very different to many other parts of the World. They have been making big strides in Europe. The Outlander is not a vehicle that the US would like. The suspension is stiff. i.e. they don't wallow around like a... well you fill in the blanks. More European than most US made cars (Ford, GM etc).
I travel to the US at least three times a year. Most of the rentals I get are really rubbish. The best was a Subaru (from Budget in Denver).
So when was the last time you saw a Skoda in the USA?

The hate is because it's a crappy car--probably one of the worst new cars available in the US market. Instead of paying $13k for one, you'd be better off paying more for something like a Honda or Toyota, which will last longer and retain more of its value than a disposable Mirage.

A 10/100 warranty is a good way to spot a crappy car, because nobody offers them unless they need to in order to attract buyers to the car.

Might as well put CarPlay on a rolling trash can. At least the looks you got would be "bemused" instead of "yech, what was that?!"

Drove two new Mitsubishi cars as rentals. The first was 0 of 10 and the second one was a 4 out of 10. AKA I wouldn't buy one.

With that being said, I feel most cars navigation/ entertainment systems could be so much more. I think Apple is taking a step in the right direction but it still falls short and isn't much better than what my current car has. CarPlay seems like a half attempted product from Apple.

Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Honda, Porsche, Volkswagen, BMW, Dodge, Ford, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Toyota,

These are all top tier manufacturers. Apple has established a very solid foundation in the automotive segment.

I wished Ford was part of the group.

From the lede:
Apple says several other automakers are committed to the platform, including BMW, Dodge, Ford, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Toyota, but few have disclosed their plans.

I'd say you got your wish.
