That's not a mini problem tho, that macOS Mojave (and mostly Logic) problem.

But it's not really that bad, i can push it to 1000-1100% in Logic out of 1200, which is better than other macs i had.
I agree with you that Logic could be better optimized. Pro Tools is basically unusable in Mojave on the mini.

wierd, looks like mine developed it. ... both samsung evo 970 and external o_O

and it sounds exactly the same as the returned caldigit did??

i don't know what is the condition of electricity here in the flat, but in the studio i'll have a separate phase for audio only.

might be it's electricity related?

My Mac Mini 2018 developed coil whine after using it for 12 hours. I remember it being whisper quiet.

It's quite loud and I can hear over the fan noise at 4ft.

Does all Mac Mini do this? Would it be worth to try other capacity like 512GB?

lol you can hear it 4ft away over fan noise and I can't hear it with your phone basically looking inside this mini's soul.

It plays quietly on my speaker too. Obviously, it cannot be reproduced exactly how I hear it.

I am guessing yours has no coil whine?

I listened through headphones to the video in #205 above, with the volume turned almost all the way up, and heard..... next-to-nothing.

I guess this is pretty much "an age thing"...

iyyh! thats horrible sound. i can only imagine it in a real life. make it basicly unusable unless you cover your ears...

I tried with headphones and as you, I heard next-to-nothing.

I then gathered my three kids, 9 to 17, and none of them could hear it, so it must not be very well recorded...

Is the problem limited to the current MM? What about MM 2012/2014 or iMac/MP/notebooks?
My MM 2012 doesn't have that noise, especially because it had originally an HDD, this only happens to SSDs.

I discovered that the Crucial SSD (MX500) that I'm using in an external enclosure, if I take it off the case, I can hear a subtle "disc scratching", similar to the one I hear on the Mini, but less intense in volume. So I suppose this is "normal" for SSDs?

I just discovered mine does it too, but it only seems to do this when I have a Virus TI (a synthesizer which connected via USB) Strangely it also does this when it's connect via USB C, or USB C on my Ultrafine Monitor. a grounding issue maybe???

i have no clue but it's somehow related to audio buffer size o_O

no and i dont think it's the drive anyway.

also my samsung 1tb external has a faint whine too.

mine seems to be stronger sometimes... but it's never annoyingly loud, only when running audio interface in super low buffers... wierd

I don't think so. It's also apperent when I don't have any audio apps open. In my case it's not there when I don't have the Virus connected. The Virus has a separate power supply. My previous Mac Mini didn't have this problem so I'm thinking the new Mac Mini just isn't grounding as well as the previous mini was.

uh, the new mini doesn't have a ground. (neither did the previous one)

The only thing I heard was the dog barking right at the beginning. Using B&W desk speakers which are pretty good and had them cranked to 100%.

I can hear it. That would annoy the hell out of me as a fan of quiet computers.

So I am not sure if I posted this yet, but I too have the coil whine. Sounds like a tiny spinning HD in my machine. SMH LOL

that's not coil whine. that's the SSD writing/reading away, which is completely normal.

You are telling me it is totally normal for an SSD to sound like a mechanical drive? LMAO!!! That's funny considering I have a room full of other SSDs, mostly Samsung and the mini is the only one in the room that makes any noise. Go Apple!

really? I was told this is the case for all SSDs by Apple. I'm sort of okay with the static noise the SSD produces. I'm not okay with this coil whine mine produces, which has a very distinct frequency at 4000 hz. (I actually measured it) It hurts my ears.

It doesn't surprise me at all that Apple told you that. I am sorry. I do not have a 4 kHz whine though, not that I can hear yet anyway. KNOCK ON WOOD! LOL
