I thought the rule of mac mini is not to put the computer to sleep. It causes all sorts oof havoc.

Rules of Mac mini 2018:

1.) Don't shut down.
2.) Don't do heavy I/O work because it may crash the system.
3.) Don't use Wi-Fi because it may interfere with other devices.
4.) Don't use Bluetooth because it may interfere with other devices.

Am I missing anything?

There really is no need to put the computer to sleep.

Well I agree, kind of. But what about my eGPU. That will probably stay on all the time. Do I shut off the eGPU and Monitor and leave the Mini on?

Im not sure what the best state of idle is with the Mini connected to a eGPU.

No Sleep Mini
Turn off Monitor
Turn off eGPU

No Sleep Mini
Leave on eGPU

Edit: Or just shut it down and not worry about it.

Unless you are worried about the electric bill, make sure everything is hooked up to a good APC, leave it running, and just turn off the monitor when you will be away for a while.

Leaving the eGPU running without a workload, is no different than leaving the computer running without a workload. It won't hurt anything.

Since it is a few days old, I want to see how it functions. I think the KP memory could have been do to encrypting Time Machine. I have Energy Savings like my current 2017 laptop with power adapter on, Number 2,3,4 ON. #2 Put hard disk to sleep when possible #3 Wake for Network access #4 Enable Power Nap. #1 Off Prevent computer from sleeping.

Monitor is off, eGPU is on.

I will be very disappointed if I can not run like this and have to force it to always be on when the last 3 machines I had functioned with no glitches with these settings in Mojave. iMac 2015, MBP 13" 2016, Current MBP 15" 2017

I'll report back of any problems. I expect not to have any........

I put my 2018 Mac mini to sleep all the time and have had no problems.
What is your specific setup? (Monitor model, monitor connection, external drive connections, mouse brand/connection type, keyboard model/connection type, usb hub model, tb connections, webcam, etc)

I use an Acer G257HU through HDMI. I have a USB DAC connected to one of the USB-A ports. The other port has an Anker UBS-A 4 port hub to which I have connected a 5TB USB drive, a Brother monochrome laser printer and a Cyberpower UPS. My keyboard and trackpad are a Magic Keyboard and Trackpad 2 connected through Bluetooth.

No TB3 connections or webcams at this time.

Edit: one correction: I actually have a DDC (digital to digital converter) hooked up to a USB-A port, which is in turn connected to a DAC.

Although slightly facetious, this is pretty much my mini use. I've had it nearly 6 weeks. It's on and used 8-10 hours a day. Never had an OS crash of any type. I went into it with a fixed design in mind to avoid loss of work and aggravation. I need to use macOS and I want it as stable as modern T2 chip Mac's can be.

no sleep: but monitors do screensaver / sleep. shutdown mini each night
no wi-fi : I have wired gigabit
no bluetooth: I use usb keyboard / usb wireless mouse
mini ports used for : hdmi, displayport monitor, usb monitor hub, usb keyboard (keyboard also has 2 usb so didn't link to monitor)
1 usb drive for backups connected as needed
mouse/iphone/ipad/speakers connect to usb monitor hub
mass storage needs (20 TB) via NAS

My monitors can be slow to wake sometimes but they will wake up. That's the only issue I've had.

Don’t use USB2 sound devices to record or for sound in (mics, mixers, DVD drives, etc)

Are any of your USB devices USB2 or are they all USB3 or 3.1?

My DDC device (which macOS sees as a DAC) is USB2 and I'm pretty sure my UPS and laser printer are USB2 as well. The USB HD is USB3.

That is where I’m hearing problems are - in USB2. I have a USB3 powered hub where I attach my usb2 items but did notice that the apple dvd/cd player/burner plugged in directly to the mini (because macOS gave a notice that it is required) did pop throughout in a video I copied via handbrake. Not sure if that would happen with a newer tb? Apple dvd/cd player/burner.

I missed:

5.) Don’t use HDMI out due to static issues. Only use USB Type C to HDMI cable.
6.) Don’t use multiple hard drives or the system will crash on shut down and auto reboot with a crash log referencing Bridge OS.

My husband and I both use HDMI to HDMI on our minis without issue. I have a Samsung 4k and hubby 27” Dell 4k. I have 2 external HDDs and my husband has 1, both on hubs (mine powered, hubby’s off Dell monitor). No issues.

Yes. And lots of us (myself included) do have issues.

Oh and that reminds me:

7.) Don’t put mini to sleep as waking it up can cause static issues over HDMI.

Isn't sad how just because someone thinks that they don't have any issues that no issues exist? Welcome to MR LOL

Yeah no kidding. Nobody’s saying that EVERYONE has issues. Just that there are a lot of us that do. And some of them absolutely everyone with the same hardware attached has the same issue.

I totally hear you! I have learned though that unfortunately it's a losing battle. There will always be people that will blindly defend Apple to their death. I don't understand it all either. That degree of passion seems sorely misplaced into Apple. I can promise you that they don't share the same enthusiasm for their customers. All we are is a number to them.

More and more, sadly, it does feel that way.

What I don't care for about the T2 chip is unlike my 2017 MBP, I can't turn on File Vault because I have to blind password using a eGPU, I can't encrypt a Carbon Copy Clone for it will not recognize for a Start UP disk in boot drive.

So T2 was supposed to be added security but I don't have File Vault on or Decrypted my backups. So I had to do something different with my personal files unlike my previous many Macs I have had.

So, did you keep your MacMini-2018 after all?

If so, how many new ones did you try before you found an acceptable one?

These threads make me feel even better about going with the heavily outdated Mac Pro over the new Mini. It may be outdated, but at least it's stable.
