It would have been so more entertaining if they had been competing with Mercedes for pole. All but hands the race to Lewis tomorrow unless Max can get the jump at the start.

I'm hoping that Max and Lewis will have an epic battle at Hockenheim today.

If anyone can get 110% out of their car (a physical impossibility, but ya' know..) - it would be Max Verstappen. And that extra percent is enough to make him a legitimate contender to challenge the Mercedes expected race pace.

Of course, Lewis Hamilton is a smart enough Champion to know when to avoid getting into a collision with Max. If Hamilton gets a decent start, and his tires, tire strategy and power systems work OK - I think the race is his. If any of the foregoing is wrong - then I think Verstappen has a very good chance of surprising the Mercedes on their "home" track.

Of course, this being Formula One, it's very likely that pretty much none of that will come to pass. Four hours from now we'll be toasting LeClerc, Bottas, and Gasly atop the podium.

Here's to a good, safe race.

Well I can pretty much guess who will win today... no doubt by 20 plus seconds yawn....

Let’s hope Max and LeClerc battle it out again :D

Oh hang on... they just said it’s going to be a wet race!! In that case Max and Lewis will be battling it out as they are BOTH fantastic in the wet... it’s raining there now.

In fact...

WOOHOOOOOO A WET RACE AT LAST!!!

What a disgraceful segment letting Martin Bumble drive Juan’s Streamliner. That poor car must have suffered carrying around the “Bumble Butt” for that lap. God I can’t stand that idiot. ;)

Haha I was thinking it would be the Same if it was Lewis there with a young driver. They don’t make very good presenters it has to be said... still they know and understand the racing to can comment in the race well enough.

I thought Lewis did a fine job. Sky simply has far better former drivers to use for a segment like this other that Bumble Butt.

Nice drive by Seb so far. ;)

I think Hamilton will win from Leclerc. Leclerc strategy is a bit weird he has already made 3 pit stops and is on softs which will almost certainly mean another stop.

So much for Leclerc prediction.

What a race, but it definitely highlights that Mercedes’s main weakness is sometimes being very inflexible in strategy. In races that aren’t straight lights-flag, they never seem to make the decisive tactical move and are reliant on track position. CF Max swapping for a new set of inters at the penultimate restart, only for Lewis to be told he would lose too many positions because of the penalty - he was always going to have to stop again, and with new tyres it would have been easier to make up the time.

About half way through the race but I have concluded, this years cars are utterly s*** in the wet!!!!!!!!!

What the hell are they thinking with these rules? It’ll never rain? And then the utter idiots sticking on slicks whilst it’s still raining? My dog could do a better job.

As for Mercedes pot crew, Jesus what a mess...

It is a hilarious distraction derby today hahaha. Love it..

Lewis deserved that penalty for pitting the wrong side of the bollard and Ferrari deserves a time penalty for that unsafe release! Not money that they don’t care about.. that was by no means the only unsafe release they’ve done this year...

Not one to miss an opportunity to pile on Mercedes, in today’s race I really think they were limited in what they could do due with the aero package they brought expecting 35C temps on race day. They clearly have a serious cooling issue with their car on hot tracks.

The weather turned wet and cooler. There was only so much they could change on the car. I don’t think Hamilton could have done anything else even without the pit chaos. The car was simply not there. Bottas unfortunately made an error dropping his L rear onto the wet surface under load inducing the snap. He won’t be back at Mercedes next year. I feel bad for him. I hope he gets a good ride next year. It will be interesting to see if RBR will stick with Gasly? I’d like to see Bottas at RBR.

If Seb retires maybe Bottas at Ferrari for one year? Unlikely he would do a one year deal though. :apple:

That's why they call it racing.

Mercedes were doing fine. Until their drivers ran off in the wet. Drive fastest - run the most risk of running off in wet (ie. variable conditions.)

Congratulations to Verstappen for playing a great race. Not what I expected, but a well-deserved win all the same.

Summing up, such a HUGE shame that F1 is now leaving this track for an indefinite time now, when it provides races like today, it’s EXACTLY what we need on the calendar.

And for me, Max, Vettel and Kvyat are all drivers of the day.

Some rain and Mercedes absolutely disintegrated into pieces. A major chink in there armour and their win this year is now not guaranteed. They can’t race in the wet and can’t race in the hot heat.

And McLaren can make Renault work, and Red Bull can make Honda work but NOT vice versa, who’d a thought?

But major mistakes being made by the teams and drivers.

Also they said they had no data at all on the track and cars and tyres and rain so they all had to think on there toes, I want MORE of this MUCH MORE!! Because it proves when the money cannot buy you that data, the better teams prevail...

But when Lewis was saying some of the tracks they are moving to will lead to racing like watching a train go round, it has me very worried for the sport and if I’ll bother to watch it. Not sure what they are doing if they drop tracks like Germany’s.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who can’t stand Brundle lol.

I can’t remember what it was but his comment at one point during the race was totally stupid..
Mind you the Sky lady interviewing the drivers in the press ring told Lewis to get well soon after interviewing him? Why is he ill? What an utterly stupid thing to say, it was in response to their disastrous race, their not ill just rubbish when it rains.

Lewis has repeatedly been reported as being unwell, even to the point that Mercedes were looking at Ocon to sub in for him.

Lewis has been ill all weekend. They were going to pull him from the weekend.

But what a fantastic race. Great racing, plenty of incidents.
Max messed up the start (again), but drove superbly in the wet when those around him didn’t.
Great recovery from Vettel. Tbh I’d have rather Stroll got the podium though as I like to see different drivers up there for a change.

If only it rained more often!

Ah thanks Sky didn’t mention that, makes sense then lol. And yes if only it did rain more often. Spices things up wonderfully.

I take all my previous comments back. I didn’t know Mercedes had Netflix Filming this race for a special.

The Jinx was upon them.

That’ll be due to the 125 years of motorsport they are celebrating then,
I unfortunately rather then Netflix looking to take on F1.... just a pipe dream, or Amazon doing it.

Came across Clarkson's rant on current F1 matters. Have to agree with the old sod. Bring back the dangerous days and even faster cars. None of this small engine hybrid turbo whatever crap. I want to go deaf if I go to COTA, or if I'm attending the LBGP, I want to go deaf from the GP cars and smell of petrol exhaust when I get home.

And bring back the old concept cars at endurance events. None of this overly safe and not as loud stuff with excessive driver aids.
