They are just on the M1 hype train. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely the future of the Mac but Intel Macs won't be going away overnight. PowerPC was a platform that was at the end of the road for desktop use, but Intel/X86 isn't. There's plenty of need to support it for a while. I wouldn't worry too much about it!
Honestly I think users on here may have said something along the same lines as you back during the Intel transition (replace M1 with Intel and PPC with 68k).

And although you’re right that X86 isn’t going to disappear anytime soon from the world of computing in the same way that 68k did, it most certainly is the end of X86 for Apple.

As someone who owns the 2019 16" MacBook Pro since day one, there's no chance in hell I would recommend it in 2021. I am gladly selling it back to apple for $1420.

Best of luck to y'all, but if you're still in the buyers remorse period I would return that sh*t.
Language aside, agreed completely. The worst Apple laptop in years. Battery degradation on a weekly basis (seems a common issue on this model), and it would scream its fans doing just about anything. Couldn’t wait to get rid of it.

The 2021 16” is a dream by comparison.

I gave mine to my GF and in low power mode its not that bad. She loves the big screen.

What model was it? base model? When did you trade it in at Apple?

Why are you so negative about it?
2.3GHz, 32GB, 1TB, 5500M 8GB. I originally paid $3299 for it.

It's hot, loud & has **** battery life. There's a reason this is one of the most active threads on here.

I had the logic board replaced just shy of the 1 year mark. My co-worker also had the logic board fail on him. Apple never explained how or why it happened.

I know I'm leaving money on the table trading it into apple but the new ones are so much better. Even the base 14" model I've been using while I wait for my custom one to ship is beating out my 2019 16".

Again, you've been warned. Enjoy your hot garbage.

can't be as hot as my maxed out mid 2015 retina 15" right?

I think it's at least as bad. It's really bad. Bewilderingly so.
Kinda of hard to believe to be honest. Newer efficient processor and gpu same OS. I get about 5-7 hours on my mid 2015 just surfing the web in safari with a few tabs open and a tab for listening/watching to YouTube.

doing those things it gets anywhere from 40 - 55 degrees Celsius. (I changed the thermal paste and added thermal pads to the heatsink). Monterey 12.0.1 installed.

It idles around 32 - 34 degrees.

Apple is not the same company it was in 2006 when they made the PowerPC transition.

I would say the next 3-5 updates will support Intel Macs. No way it's more than 5.

when you say updates, do you mean major MacOS updates or just security and patches etc.?

When I saw my brothers new 14" MBP the difference its too much coming from a mid 2015 MBP 15".
So its 15" or bigger for me. My eyes aren't getting any younger.

just checked apple trade in value for the base model 16" intel i7 $1160.

for anyone curious.

I reversed course. Returned my 2021 14 inch and kept the 16 inch. Why? Because I miss the bigger screen and the T2 Intel laptops aren’t too obsolete yet.
I'm not sure if you are aware or anyone else but, just an FYI. AppleCare can be cancelled and refunded on products.

So if you want to be 100% covered by AppleCare (maybe you already knew this) but you'll probably need to get the AppleCare agreement # number for the plan to be transferred in your ownership.

I know this because I cancelled my AppleCare on my Mac mini before I traded it in at the store. They asked for my agreement number.

I knew you could cancel AppleCare+ if you purchased it but I didn’t know you could transfer it if someone else did.

I don't know if you can transfer it. but it would be something I would look into.

the previous owner could pull a fast one on you.

Apple is not like Microsoft, and does not maintain compatibility for long. The final version os x to support powerpc was Leopard, which came out in 2007, only 2 years after the intel transition was announced in june 2005.

And the writing was on the wall even before that. Developers already mostly abandoned powerpc by that point. So even if you think Apple will support Intel for a few more years, you won't be using any new apps. This last point is huge. Unless your laptop is going to be in a kiosk running the same app everyday, you *will* want to be able to install new apps.

Apple actually has less of an incentive to preserve compatibility this time around, as the ARM-based ecosystem is just so much larger than the intel ecosystem at this point (due to ios/ipados) and Apple can rely on software from there (using catalyst).

Technically 3 if you count the Mac Pro.
I doubt they'll f*ck over everyone who dropped serious coin on that guy anytime soon.
Agreed. Not after as close to a public apology as you can get with the 2013 trash can fiasco.

I stumbled upon a deal for a base model 2019 MBP 16" intel i7 and was wondering what the overall sentiment is towards the future support I should expect (best and worst case) years of OS upgrades and support.

Any thoughts or sources would be greatly appreciated.
I wouldn’t buy the old model for just a few hundred dollars difference. Maybe if the base 16” was like $1200. The new 16” is a huge leap in performance and most importantly it runs cooler, and is quiet. I used to keep myintel 16 under my desk when it was docked because it sounded like a hair drier when I was doing anything besides web browsing. A $500 savings isn’t worth it IMO. If money is an issue I’d just go with the air or save up and get the model you want in a month or two. While your worrying about OS support ending in a few years you’d wish you got the M1 eventually.

The bigger screen is a big deal for me. While I had an M1 Mac mini, I need portability now.

I would love to get the new M1 16" MBP but its out of my budget right now. The deal I found is $1000 for the base model intel i7 touchbar 16" MBP. I'm being patient on it right now as the price may be lowered to $850-$900 sometime next month.

I could get the MB Air but the 13" screen and upgrade prices (Storage and/or Ram) are the things that push me towards a used older model.

I'm not in too much of a rush right now to get a new laptop. My maxed out 2015 15" retina is running Monterey with no problems and I have the OS support until...?

I'll keep my options open. If the rumored new designed MacBook (air?) comes next year at 14" display I may jump on that if its a decent deal (more internal storage/ram).

With yearly macOS updates there’s quite a bit of pain in supporting two architectures. I’d guess 3 years of macOS updates, just to make sure everyone with AppleCare who buys the last model is still on a current OS when it finishes. Then three years of security patches, and then out of support.

apple really needs to offer a 15-16" base consumer laptop. if they offered the M1 air (or regular MacBook) with a larger screen I would already own it.

You know, I hear this same thing repeated ad nauseam here and elsewhere... "if you do anything but browse the web, etc., the fans turn on and the computer literally turns into a furnace". Meanwhile, I have had an i9 16" for a year now, and have not had this experience at all. I am a hobby photographer, and regularly import 100s of RAW files into Lightroom, edit, export, and the fans are barely audible, if at all. I browse the web, while listening to music, messaging, excel open, etc., and the fans don't turn on. We have used my laptop for hour long zoom calls, and no fan. I have it plugged in to my external monitor right now, and no fans. Admittedly these aren't extremely stressful tasks, but they do fall outside the realm of JUST web browsing... What am I doing differently than you and others? And/or is there some exaggeration taking place?

That is not to take away from the numerous benefits of the new M1 Pro - they are next level and by all means ARE cooler, quieter, and the battery life is amazing. And I do agree that were you to really start pushing the 2019 16" absolutely the fans would turn on, it would heat up, battery life would drop, while the M1 Pro would likely not experience any of these things given the same tasks being performed.

But this constant "if you even look at the 2019 16" funny it'll turn into a jet engine" thing is getting a bit ridiculous - and does it disservice. It will perform just fine for most tasks, and in my experience I can do plenty of other things outside of web browsing without the fans turning on. Anyway, just an anecdote as a counterpoint to yours.
