I would guess they would support Intel for 5 years.

Just imagine the backlash from the professionals who use the Intel Mac Pro if they drop it in a year or two.
I would definitely be happy with 5 years. As all the features and functionality that is currently offered on intel based MacBooks are more than enough for me.

None of the MacOS M1 only features give me FOMO.

As someone who just this last weekend bought an used Intel 2020 MBP, I am quite comfortable with support prospects for those machines; even if we do not get major OS updates for 5 years, I am sure security updates are coming. Microsoft just did something similar with Windows 11 and Windows 10; devices older than a few years will stay on Windows 10 for a while and then get dropped.

One thing that has me perplexed about the whole move to ARM here is that IMO it feels short-sighted from Apple to cut all of Intel models out of their lineup. I would like to think they have telemetry to know just how many folks use things like Bootcamp, Parallels or VMWare (because they need an occasional access to Intel-based Windows) and I do not see how this gets resolved even if let's say Microsoft starts allowing ARM Windows under Parallels / VMWare. There are just so many Intel based applications that will not get their ARM counterparts even if ARM Windows is readily available.

I guess we will see what the future holds; but I would not be shocked if they keep at least a sliver on their Mac Mini / Mac Pro offering on Intel - which would then make MacOS updates a much simpler proposition.

I appreciate the responses from everyone, but I found a deal on a MBA M1 that I just couldn't refuse.

So I guess I won't have to worry too much about MacOS support for the decent future.

The bigger screen is a big deal for me. While I had an M1 Mac mini, I need portability now.

I would love to get the new M1 16" MBP but its out of my budget right now. The deal I found is $1000 for the base model intel i7 touchbar 16" MBP. I'm being patient on it right now as the price may be lowered to $850-$900 sometime next month.

I could get the MB Air but the 13" screen and upgrade prices (Storage and/or Ram) are the things that push me towards a used older model.

I'm not in too much of a rush right now to get a new laptop. My maxed out 2015 15" retina is running Monterey with no problems and I have the OS support until...?

I'll keep my options open. If the rumored new designed MacBook (air?) comes next year at 14" display I may jump on that if its a decent deal (more internal storage/ram).
I don’t think the air is getting the 14” screen it’s probably reserved for the pros but we will see.

you need to get in contact with the previous owner. you can transfer AppleCare
Did you know if you trade in your machine or sell it back to apple you can get a refund on AppleCare artless a pro rated rate? When I traded in my 16” for the M1 they refunded me almost $150 yesterday.
