My XS Max is unlocking before i fully get it up to my face vertically. So though it will be improved, I may not see where "I'm missing" a significant upgrade.. but it's all speculation, we'll see.

The new FaceID will use an advanced laser system to etch a QR code into your forehead, and then use the code for unlocking the device. This will allow multiple users to unlock a single iPhone, as long as they each get etched with their own unique code for that specific phone. You can, of course, have multiple codes etched into your head, so you can unlock multiple iPhones, and even have the code etched under your chin, so you can unlock your phone while it lays flat on a table. Just raise your chin and appear thoughtful.

The all new iPhone QR – Coming sometime in 2019.

Now where do I collect my analyst paycheque?

Face ID in the new iPhones works absolutely flawless. It can’t be improved any further.
As someone else said, it could get better by improving the range of face detection. For example being able to unlock the phone while laying on a table without hovering over your face that much or when Animoji fails to "detect a face" because the phone has to be tilted slightly lower.

It does work flawlessly, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be improved...
I have a $20 hammer that works flawlessly- a $160 contractor hammer is still better.

With regards to FaceID, wider angle would be a definite improvement.

Apple's 2019 iPhones will come equipped with an upgraded Face ID camera system, according to a new note to investors from often reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

According to Kuo, next-generation iPhones will feature a new flood illuminator that will improve Face ID by lowering the impact of invisible light from the environment. Kuo believes the upgraded sensor will be included in all 2019 iPhone models, which he has previously said will again consist of two OLED iPhones and one LCD iPhone.

Kuo's note also suggests a Time of Flight (ToF) 3D camera will be introduced in iPad models in late 2019 or early 2020, and could expand to the iPhone in the second half of 2020. He continues to believe that Apple has no plans to adopt ToF in 2019.

According to Kuo, a ToF 3D camera would allow for 3D models to be captured via the iPad and then edited with the Apple Pencil for an "all-new productivity experience." On the iPhone, eventual ToF support will allow for new AR experiences and improved photo quality.A time-of-flight camera system is designed to determine the distance between objects by measuring the time-of-flight of a light or laser signal between the camera and the subject at each point in the image.

Kuo previously said he does not believe Apple is ready to implement this kind of camera system in the iPhone because it would not create the "revolutionary AR experience" that Apple is aiming for. Kuo believes that for the AR experience Apple wants, the company would need 5G connectivity, augmented reality glasses, and a more powerful Apple Maps database.

Though new iPhones are a good year away, we've been hearing rumors for months. We're expecting upgraded A13 chips in the upcoming devices, and there have been rumors of either a reduced notch or no notch at all, which could be a component of the improved TrueDepth camera system.

Rumors have also suggested Apple is considering a triple-lens rear camera system for at least some 2019 iPhone models, but it's not clear how that meshes with rumors suggesting a ToF implementation is off of the table for the 2019 lineup. A triple-lens camera could still provide benefits to photo taking, such as 3x optical zoom and better performance in poor lighting conditions.

Also the 2019 iPhones will have faster graphics, faster CPU’s and will be the Best iPhones Ever!!!!

Horizontal detection will be my most significant hope for it. Accessing your phone with seamless ease is crucial to the experience.

Now that the iPads can do it, I'll expect it in next year's iPhones.

Next hope is improved angle detection.

& then more frequent auro-re-scans after failed attempts, but the above article's reported improvements should reduce the need for this.

Lol, of course it can, and it really should. It's still very slow compared to TouchID, it doesn't work in landscape and it has a relatively high failure rate.

Great. Just what we all need. To be blasted by even larger amounts of IR. No thanks. :apple:
Lol, IR are harmless.

I still stand by my first opinion of the notch on the iPhone X, XR, XS and XS Maxx. I felt from day one it was just a physical way to differentiate an iPhone from ALL OTHER OFFERINGS at the time of inception. Of course Android has used it since but you get my point :]
No.

So, landscape support for FaceID on the iPhones...? If they can do it with the iPad, they can do it with the iPhone... even if that means sacrificing a bit of thickness to do it.

Also, for the people asking people that want a wider field of view what they are doing with their phones flat, don’t worry about it. It’s none of your business why someone would want FaceID to work that way. Why do people feel the need to question why someone would want a certain feature on their devices? We should want them to put in as many features that appease different areas of their market without compromising others. Same goes for people talking down 3D Touch. Sure, not everyone uses it, but some find it extremely useful and to be an impressive bit of tech. If you don't like it or don't use it, turn it off. It's as simple as that. It's not like Apple will bring down the price or add more battery to the phones if they did remove 3D Touch. That would just be another excuse for them to make the devices thinner, yet again, keeping the same battery life goals.

3X optical zoom would be outstanding, that gets you into “true” portrait focal length range (~70mm - 105mm eq.).

Whatever is new, Tim will be "Super excited" about it, Johhny will claim it's "the most advanced design ever" and Phil will once again try to convince us that this camera is the best ever. A few weirdos will play games that none of us will ever want to play and we will have to endure some tiresome fool using their phone to make a movie that a 5 year old might make. Oh and another few hundred on the price just to make it looks like it's worth upgrading.

where the heck is the landscape FaceID update for my iPhone? It should've been in iOS12 from the beginning. Unless I missed it, Apple didn't announce that the sensors in the new iPad Pros are newer or more advanced or magically rotate within the display based on orientation... meaning they can just as easily push an update to get landscape FaceID on my phone. This is my biggest gripe with FaceID. But Apple being Apple, I'm sure landscape FaceID won't come until the 2019 iPhone because... reasons.
