Apple yesterday added the 2019 Mac Pro to its online store for refurbished products in the United States, offering customers the ability to save approximately 15 percent compared to equivalent brand-new models.

The cheapest currently available refurbished model is a base configuration upgraded from 32 GB to 48 GB of RAM. That model retails for $6,299 new, but is available refurbished for $5,349.

At the high end is a 16-core model with 192 GB of RAM, a pair of Radeon Pro Vega II Duo graphics cards, 8 TB of storage, and an Afterburner card, now available refurbished for $22,439. That's a savings of nearly $4,000 compared to a brand-new model.

All of Apple's refurbished products go through a rigorous refurbishment process before being offered for sale, which includes inspection, repairs, cleaning, and repackaging. Like new purchases, refurbished Macs come with a one-year warranty that can be extended with an AppleCare+ purchase.

For tips on purchasing a refurbished product, make sure to check out our guide.

(Thanks, Ralph!)

However, many of these Mac Pros are bought for commercial/industry/business purposes where they'll pay for themselves
I think only for the most narrow and specific commercial/business. There are other less expensive machines that make more sense for commercial settings. From the reviews I've seen, this machine makes more sense for the high end, large companies doing movies and what not.

For normal people and enthusiasts/hobbyists, I'd say yes. However, many of these Mac Pros are bought for commercial/industry/business purposes where they'll pay for themselves many times over, or they're a tiny portion of the project's budget.

Which, if true, why would you buy refurbished just to save a few bucks?

I was a Mac Genius from 2007-2014... it's a well known way to save 10-25% and still get the same 1 year limited warranty with the option of AppleCare. I've bought refurb Macs since 2005 (even more now that I don't have EPP discounts) and never had an issue with them.

Behind the Genius Bar in iRepair, refurb Macs have a different serial number structure but you'd never know they were refurbished or new when opening one.

If you're looking at the base model, you should really consider the factory refurbished iMac Pro for $3500, very similar performance, with quadruple the storage space and a better GPU, plus of course comes with a 27" 5K display.
In a couple of years you can update the GPU and storage in your Mac Pro for a lot less money than it would cost to do so with the iMac Pro (which would need to be replaced). And since intel’s processors aren’t getting any faster year after year, maybe it makes sense long term :)

Not so nice to have that display inseparable from the computer, though. Also the graphics card is fixed and not replaceable. Plus no internal expansion for drives and PCI-e cards. No, I think a tower computer makes more sense in most cases. Too bad Apple doesn't offer one for the so called semi-pro's.

You answered your own question
Actually the question was in response to LARGE, HIGH END CORPORATE companies with LARGE WALLETS. That's what the posts were saying the Mac Pro was for. Not the individual like you and me. Big companies could care less about saving a few hundred dollars on a refurbished.

Back in 2010 I bought a 2009 Mac Pro trough the Apple Refurbished Store. The only difference I found was the plain packaging. Condition and warranty was the same as brand new and the best thing was that I saved about $1,100.
Are you a corporate, high end company making movies or other entity that make enough money with it to pay for it many times over? That was the post I replied to, not about your average Joe.

You were a Mac Genius, not a movie maker another entity that doesn't blink twice at spending $20K on a Mac Pro that they'll make back easily on projects. That was the comments I was replying to.

Agreed. There are more advantages, including much higher memory capacity (1.5TB), much higher memory bandwidth, and a max of 28 cores, should you have the relevant workloads.

It does: Mac Pro 🙂 It’s affordable to anyone who uses Macs to earn revenue, though overkill for some.

As far as hobbyists go, some people pay similar amounts, whether base prices ir fully loaded—for their preferred toys 🤷‍♂️

Other than Youtubers with more money than sense, there is almost no market for this machine. Anyone who was a "pro" creative or content creator using Macs in the past has either reinvested into PCs or gone all-in on iMac/iMac Pro. Over the last 6 years that Apple has pissed on its pro users, and then they insult those same users by offering a desktop machine only a small percentage of those creatives can afford.

Next year Apple will be moving Mac to ARM platform. The writing is on the wall and this expensive doorstop will be discontinued in the next 1-2 years.

up to $4000 off 😍
now only $22000 🥴
That config is already gone, sold out.

The most expensive config is now $14,109 (was $16,599).

ETA: The top config doesn’t show in the first link mentioned (all Mac Pro refurbs) but it does in the link specified for that specific config:

Any discounts for the Monitor stand? it's hard to balance my monitor with a bunch of bricks and a hanger.
They’ll probably be available for $850, but until they get enough warranty-related and customer returns of the XDR monitor itself, their won’t be any available on the refurb store. It could be quite awhile.
