Hi all,

I noticed that the trackpad on my MacBook Pro turns the computer on from shutdown, even just by lightly touching it. I discovered this when I shutdown my Mac to clean it off with a lightly damp towel. At first I thought it was happening when I brushed over the TouchID sensor, because I thought that also doubled as the power button (why else can you press down and feel it click?).

The other day I realized that it was actually the trackpad doing this. Does everyone's behave this way or is mine not work correctly for some reason?

I can't seem to find a way to turn it off in the settings, so just trying to make sure I am not missing something here.

Thank you!

That is normal behavior.

I know of no way to disable it.

So, the trackpad serves as the actual power button that use to be in the upper right of all Mac laptops? Like, I would press down the trackpad and hold it for several seconds if I ever needed to force my Mac to shutoff?

No, you use the Touch ID button.

I disliked the behavior that simply opening the MBP's lid or plugging it into power caused the MBP to boot up. Fortunately, you can set an NVRAM parameter to stop this from happening. It used to be, in an earlier version of the macOS and on the 2018 MBPs, that setting this NVRAM parameter also kept the MBP from booting when any key is pushed or from trackpad input, but that doesn't appear to be the case anymore.

i would be very happy if you answer this thread https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/are-these-damages-caused-because-of-drop-scratch-dent.2202877/

This "feature" drives me nuts since I like to wipe down my keyboard and trackpad with a microfiber cloth regularly. To prevent concurrent keyboard inputs I like to shut it down....but it fires up the minute I start cleaning the keys or trackpad.
