This should be called the iPad SE. The new air should be called iPad and then you have the iPad Pro line. iPad Air used to be the the thinner and lighter version of the iPad but now it’s nearly identical to the Pro line.
The iPad Air has never been the thinner and lighter version of the iPad. iPad Air 1 and 2 were the only full sized iPad in existence when they were released and the Air 3 was using the same chassis as the 10.5 inch iPad Pro.
 
Yes, but that is still a lot more expensive, the price is appealing on this iPad compared to the rest of the line. It is not my main computer, only use in the evening, so hopefully will be fine.

Arguably, I could have paid apple to change the battery on my pro to prolong a little bit more, costing the same

The iPad is a fine product, you'll surely grow to love it.

The battery replacement option was one I considered throwing out to you. I always opt for the shiny new toy, over getting a replacement battery, so I struggled to suggest you do it differently than I would. :)
