Two things that this year has made obvious:

1.) A lot of the modern tracks suck. The racing at stand-in circuits--especially the classic F1 tracks--has been tremendous.

2.) F1 would be so much better without Mercedes in it. Yes, we already knew this but this year is driving it home. Every time they have a bad race it's edge-of-your-seat racing and literally anyone's race to win. The rest of the field is very close.
Agree on the tracks. But that’s been obvious for years.

Disagree on Mercedes. Without them it would just be the RBR show. There’s always someone who rises to the top. It’s the others job to catch up.

Merc has basically an unlimited budget. Until we see the upcoming budget caps and other changes to level the field a bit, there is no hope of the others catching up unless the cars are much simpler (i.e., N/A V8s instead of the overly complicated/expensive turbo hybrids).

The best thing for F1 would be for Merc to pack up and leave.

What do you propose they do, banish a team once they consistently do a better job than anybody else? Mercedes are just the latest brand in the history of that team and if you get rid of Mercedes, another British team will locate in the Brackley premises and employ the engineers and staff currently there. Perhaps we could ban the Ilmor engineers in Brixworth for developing such a good engine too? lol.

Ferrari have a very similar budget. RBR are not exactly cash strapped either

Ferrari perhaps have the biggest budget in F1 and still get more CVC money than any other team as far as I know. Toyota are perhaps the best indicator or how spending more than any other team doesn’t guarantee wins or even podiums, let alone world championships! Mercedes are successful because of where they are located and the resources they have around them in both personnel and engineering.

I didn't say they should be banned. There are things that can happen to improve the sport (and many of these are going to be implemented soon, so we will see if it works). The engines should be N/A V8s, or V10s to make them simpler and allow more manufacturers to be involved. If the big companies like Merc and Renault get mad about losing their hybrids, then they can go play in WEC. Road car relevance should not be a consideration for F1. The soul of F1 has always been small teams building racecars, not big car companies testing their products. Worse teams should get more testing time. The prize money should not be based on finishing order, which allows more teams to improve. There should be a budget cap that is within reach of all teams.

"But that's not fair!"

Exactly. The best sports are not fair. It's not fair that the best NFL team gets the worst pick in the NFL draft. It's not fair that the most financially successful NFL franchise can't spend their extra money on player salaries to do even better. Sports are fair in the sense that the rules apply to everyone. But there are negative feedback loops in place to reign in runaway success so that the sport still exists as a sport and not a dreary routine.

The old days of privateer teams in F1 are over and a massive reason for that is huge spending and less people watching the sport due to tv paywalls. Sponsors are no longer interested and few manufacturers are investing in engine programs and additional sponsorship. Everybody watching would live to see the end of the hybrids, DRS and super durable tyres but it’s the constant attempts to make the sport exciting which has caused such a loss of direction.

I can’t comment on NFL matters as I’ve never seen it or been interested in it.

I love this.

So do Ferrari and look where they are. Might not always be the most exciting for some but hats off to the engineers at Mercedes for continually doing a phenomenal job.

That last sentence made me lol, proper sour grapes.

Lewis must be feeling better! Not sure I could wear that without my eyes going funny!

Ugh, honestly. Would it have killed Lewis Hamilton to merely sit this one out, and give Russell another go?
Really...
It's absolutely ridiculous to suggest he should "sit this one out" to let someone else drive his car when he's fit, able and thrives on what he does. He's chasing all kinds of records and for a racing driver not being able to race last week must have hurt.

It was great to see Russell in the Mercedes last week but some people need a reality check.

Absolutely. Lewis wants to race. It’s not his fault his team mate is crap and no other team can build a decent car.

Well, I will just sit in my corner and shut up then...
You were the one getting the hump because a 7 time World Champion eager to get back to the sport he loves for the final race of the season wouldn't sit it out. And describe it as 'merely'.😂
