If software which you use, can utilize 4 cores and above, you will be better of with i5.
If software can not use more than 2 cores or single core software - then there will be no difference.
What about Chrome? Would 4 cores make for a better web browsing experience vs. 2 cores?

So i have checked mine 2 core - 4 threads retina 2012 MBP13.
Screen Shot 2020-03-25 at 19.35.23.png
As the spikes goes up at the same time - Chrome for Mac OS seems to utilize pretty well those 2 cores and 4 threads.
You have to do the same thing with quad core to see if there any difference.
But ultimately, if it can use 2 then it also should know how to use 4 cores.
=========================
But that was unusual opening and reloading tab after tab burst in a minute. Usually this is not a typical web browsing use case. So browsing will be barely better even on MBP 16, because it is not so demanding to CPU. It is better of the RAM if you'd like to keep many tabs.
=========================
Checked at the store, MBP 16 is really good for opening apps. It was the fastest to open preinstalled software, while MBP Air was the last. But that was a matter of milliseconds, still noticeable.
For heavy browsing with 50 tabs open - i have no compliance to my old MBP 13 2012. It has no lags - until you open DaVinci or Lightroom next to it.

Ok, another bonus with the new MBA is the faster ram, that should help too!

This new Air is the bomb. Because it outperforms my late 2012 MBP 13 by 25% in some cases, and 50%-200% in other cases. And I have no complaints for my Mac. It is really fast and handles editing video, photoshop and lightroom, little gaming, python work, tons of Word docs, Excel and tabs open. The only con - no 4k video editing, lags video playback when 1080 is color graded in DaVinci.
So the new Air is just enough for most of the users. People just tend to watch a lot of youtube nowadays, and think that it is not enough, because it is not enough for some high-demand youtubers.

Yea man, I'm really excited to get mine, I've been away from Mac for a while now, been on Linux for a few years. Looking forward to getting reacquainted with Mac OS!

THANK YOU! I've been on the fence about buying this ever since Max Tech scared me out of it. I've realized I'm really only needing it for web browsing, word processing, spreadsheeting, and watching media on it.

I've settled on the i3 version because I have a powerful desktop PC for anything gaming/video editing that I'd need. That YouTuber summed it perfectly by saying it's good for a casual user, not so good for a heavy user.[/QUOTE]

Just sum it up. 2 cores running at 2.2 on i3 = 2.2 + 2.2 = 4.4 Ghz.
4 cores in i5 = 1.1 + 1.1 + 1.1 + 1.1 = 4.4 Ghz.
Shell of the thin Air can't hold more than 4.4 Ghz of workload.
Especially with thin custom Ice Lake chips in smaller housing for Apple.
That is a severely flawed way of calculating CPU performance. I see a 3.4GHz boost then a tapering down to 2.9Ghz on the 2020 Air with the i7 stressing all threads using Intel Power Gadget.

Yeah, never mind that heat scales exponentially with clock, so 4 cores are more efficient than 2 for the same amount of heat, because they will be able to clock way more than half the speed of the dual core.

Woah. What specs do you have?

I do have retina 2012 MBP 13" - 8gb/128gb/i5 dual core. And the fact that 2020 Air is 25% lighter than my old MBP and 2 times more power makes me feel astonished.
Currently I don't have an Air. I am waiting for back to school.

Using an i5 at the moment. Playing music from mixcloud, 4 tabs open, Wondershare pdf element open, excel open, outlook open, mail open, using messages also, along with nordvpn open and it is from 45-56 degrees Celsius (spike up to 60 and back down within 10 seconds) with 0 RPM for the fan.

Just an update:

I got the 2020 i3 MacBook Air today, and the temps have been very good when I'm doing normal tasks. As I'm typing this, the CPU temps are in the low 40's, and go to the 50/60's when watching a YouTube video. I did see the temps peak a few times at 100 degrees when I was setting things up, but it quickly came back down. I will say when I was watching a YouTube video, my lap was getting a bit warm. It wasn't unbearable or anything, nor was it pegged at 70+ temps.

Gotta say, I love this keyboard too. My God.

Is the performance increase that you're quoting for the Air based on benchmarks, or your experience with the 2020 Air?

This is based on comparing my old MBP to the new Air from the various youtube videos using benchmarks and application use.

im glad you stood yr ground based on logic and good reasoning.
and followed up with your own report after using yr new i5.
and were able to report actual usage of the i5 under a scenario that most intended users of it would run it.
no fan.
appreciate yr posts.
thanks.

No problem. Put it through some more work today. Sat outside in shade at about 75-78 degrees outside. Doing the same type of stuff. Temps from around 60-68C with spikes up to 71-72C and the fan at 2600RPMs but silent.

Seems like everyone that actually has bought the i5 isn't burning down their house every time they open more than one tab. Maybe this is a good lesson in the fact that the more sensationalist a YouTube video is, the more money the creator gets from views.

A video titled 'the 2020 Macbook Air i5 is pretty cool and quiet unless you're really stressing it' doesn't drive the clicks as much I guess.

this. the 2020 Air CPU has a great processor with, as usual, as Intel promotes, Turbo Burst. sudden, but not prolonged peak usage.

thanks for good reasoning.

i also think, that the apple site as well, however, touts great (reduced drop) frame rates.
so gamers who really wanted this machine to give pro performance, will not like this machine.
that's a fair comment by gamers. but its not a fair complaint by gamers.

I agree with you. Don't get me wrong, when I saw Iris G7 graphics and a quad core i5, I immediately started thinking 'finally, a Macbook Air I can game on.' When I read up more about the machine, it looks like the games will have to be very old or graphically lightweight.

It sucks, but unless there's a breakthrough with Apple ARM notebooks in the future, passsively cooled Macs just aren't going to be useful as gaming machines. If even the modern MB Pros struggle, the Air doesn't really have much of a chance.

Just like you said, it's a fair comment, but if you want to game, buying the MBA is the wrong choice - buying one and complaining that it can't game is, as you say, not really a fair complaint.

Just received the 2020 i5 macbook air a few days ago. I can certainly say its super hot during normal use (browsing web). Comparing to 2019 macbook air, that was not hot at all. This is really running around 70 degree most of the time, and my fingers are getting sweaty, it even hurt a bit to touch the top middle keys, its uncomfortable to keep on lap. My house is about 22 degrees, quite cold inside now, cant imagine how this is when its summer.

So all this talk of temperature and fans got me curious to the point where I installed the Intel Power Gadget and Macs Fan Control apps just to see for my self. I've been using computers since well before Windows 95, and this is the first time I've ever tried anything beyond the resource monitor.

Looking at the IPG, the temp hover around 50-60 degrees, and spike quite frequently up, for example when I open a document,.. but goes back down very quickly. Not much difference when multi-tasking using "my" typical apps. Feels warm, but not warmer than my work issued MBP 13 i7/16 from 2018 (didn't install IPG MFC on it.. corp policies.. so, just based on feeling).

The only time fans got loud was when I tried using the "Test" feature in IPG to push the machine, but nothing in my normal usage will push the machine to 100% usage. The temperature was also stuck on 100 degrees while doing "Test" but once finished, quickly shot back down while lessening the fan spins. I did not realize this but, the fans were spinning at 2,800 or thereabouts for a few minutes after the "Test" and I could actually hear it if I brought the MBA next to my ears. Doesn't bother me.. but, YMMV.

Long story short, I believe my MBA 2020 i5/16 is a good machine for how I use it. Mostly non-work (Although I have all the tools to do work on it if I wanted), browser, email and document creation via office+ acrobat.
If I was getting a main work machine, I may go MBP16 for the specs, the screen size, and because I have a bad tendency to go for spec overkill.. but as a mostly private use machine, used in mobile and/or less stressful situations, absolutely satisfactory for my use.

Now, I am going to uninstall these apps..

That was my experience, even after a week of usage. I've returned it for now (using my 2019, which is also not hot at all) and am waiting on an i3 MBA. I'll post a review in the user reviews thread to see how I go with that from a heat/battery life perspective, mostly for web browsing.
