I’ve been saying Mercedes were sandbagging and today has confirmed it for me lol. Got a feeling they’ll be hard to beat this year again but hope Perez and Red Bull make it more difficult.

LOL absolutely sandbagging it. There was never any doubt that their pace during testing and FP held back. No way Mercedes couldn't improve a car that is largely a carry-over from the W11 due the cost regulations this year.

It's one weekend, the first in the season, I'm not jumping up and down about one pole position in the 1st race.

4 races ... maybe.

Or any other conclusions for that matter.

Damn I'm smart.

Verstappen > Alonso >>>> Abysm > 💩 >>>>> Perez.

No way Perez can do anything better than Albon this season. Bad RBR management and terrible choice. They should’ve signed Hulkenberg.

Not sure I agree. A lot of Albon's outcomes or finishes was a result of his inexperience leading to dumb mistakes. Perez's experience should already put RB in a better position with him as #2. It was the right choice to promote him last year but he needs to be doing what Pierre Gasly is doing, learning and getting experience with the mid-field of cars.

RB would never sign Hulkenberg. He’s to tall. I think Perez will work out.
Good to see cars seem a lot closer. But the longer regulations stay the same, the closer they get. We all know this, so why don’t they keep them the same for longer periods?

The only good quality in Perez is: The mexican money $$$ from Telcel. Perez is a terrible pay driver, period. Just like Latifi and "MazeSpin". They all are paydrivers with not enough quality to drive in F1. I've been following F1 since 1987. I have NEVER seen so many terrible drivers in a single season.

I quit watching live when they introduced the Halo, DRS, more and more electronic help, more anal-retentive rules and a terrible (and expensive) hybrid engine. Since then, I just follow the results the day after. I enjoy much more re-watching the VHS from the 80's and 90's seasons than the current dire and mediocre state that F1 is sunk in.

Add to that, brazilian Globo TV did not renew the contract to broadcast it and F1 moved to Bandeirantes Sports TV for its broadcast. I used to follow even the Free Practices. Now I don't even care about the races when I lose the right time to wake up for them.

And before someone say "probably because there are no more brazilians in F1", I am half spanish, half brazilian. I feel myself more spanish than brazilian. I was a Senna fan, yes; but I don't see F1 the way Brazilians see the World Cup. F1 is not a "nations cup" for me. I support anyone with a genuine talent: I've supported Hakkinen, Montoya, Alonso, Button, and now Verstappen. Never supported Barrichello and Massa, never for a single minute.

But with the stupid idea of creating "mini races" on saturday in three events, it was just the nail in the coffin for me. F1 is pretty much dead now. Chase Carey's management makes me want Bernie Ecclestone back.

Verstappen P1, Perez P9, it's the beginning of the end for Perez career. Good. Verstappen and Norris are the only ones on this grid where I can see a brutal talent. I just wish F1 could fix itself to return to the good times.

RB did talk to Hulkenberg. Verstappen said he was asked about it by RB's administration, to which he replied, "I see no problem, Hulk is a close friend". So yes, RB did consider signing Hulkenberg.

Agreed on all accounts... oops except for the bit about Perez being terrible.

So, here we go...!

PS: Looking for good things from Russell. I am hoping this is Lewis' final year, and Russell replaces him. Also, I am one of those that backs the underdog. So, looking for Perez to do well. I think he simply deserves it, for all his efforts over the years.

As expected, Perez was slow and complete disaster. Not different from Gasly/Albon. Starts 9th and finishes 5th almost a minute behind the three leaders.

The second Red Bull car is expected to fight Mercedes. That’s what Horner and Marko want for all races.

Instead he was fighting McLaren, Ferrari and a Green Mercedes. He’s a joke saved by TelCel money.

I said it before and I will repeat, they should’ve signed Hulkenberg. Better than Perez as a qualifier and much more consistent with his lap by lap times. Hulk just didn’t have luck when the chances for a podium appeared for him. Same thing happened to Albon, if it weren’t for Hamilton punting him out twice, Albon would have more two podiums and a better chance to retain his seat. For crying out loud, he was on his way to win the Styrian GP when this happened.

Boring race as usual. F1 hasn’t changed a bit to fix their problems. 👎🏼

Sounded like a good battle for the lead, and like most I’m sure I want to see Merc challenged this year

Hmmm first race in the car so let’s not judge this like football fans judge players lol.

I judge it based on my +30 years following this sport. Perez is not F1 material. If you are good, you are good straight out of the box with any car no matter what.

How was that one boring?

One of the most exciting I've seen in the last 5 or 6 years.

Perez is a "pay for the drive" racer, sure, but he is better than the average "pay for" driver, imho.

I thought he did a good job getting back in the points.

That said, I'd love for Hulkenberg to have a ride.

Mazepin practiced spinning all weekend and then perfected it on lap one. Sadly no one told Mick Schumacer those weren't team orders... :p

I've been much more critical than supportive over the last 5-6 seasons, but I think describing that one as boring is a little harsh. There was genuine drama toward the end, and even though it was pretty predictable it was going to be a battle between Lewis and Max, I felt a little excited in the final laps for a change. You could tell from the Mercedes team reaction that they didn't expect it to play out as it did.

The HASS rookies looked like they'd bought their seats and I hope they improve quickly or at least their poor driving doesn't influence anything at the other end. I thought there were some interesting midfield battles too and although almost all the overtaking was DRS enhanced, it was interesting to watch.

Too early to call, but after that, I'll certainly be trying to watching the next one live.

That makes two of us as I’ve been watching for more than 30 years too. I think he’s a solid driver personally and once he finds his groove I think he’ll bring in some consistent points.
