A little off subject, but anyone know when 8K will become standard? I assume eventually the TV industry will want everyone to buy a new one....

Not a huge discount, but happy to see this price for the newest version. I'll be upgrading from my trusty 2015 ATV HD, so I can finally use my HomePod pair for Atmos and my other TV inputs through ARC!

IMO, never.

TVs have an optimal viewing distance by size. If you're sitting at the correct distance for your TV size, 4K TVs are already "retina" (smaller pixels than the human eye can see).

Going to 8K, unless you're sitting too close to a large TV to actually be able to see all of it, is not better-- and will make media files MUCH larger, likely resulting in increased compression-- so lower overall image quality.

Just checked Best Buy and they're selling a 55" Samsung 8K TV for $999... so I guess it's already starting to happen. Issue is there's not so much 8K content to consume yet.

I think you really need to learn more about TVs if you think 8K is what you should be prioritizing. Focus your money on things that actually improve image quality.

This youtube channel is pretty great for TV reviews:

... and 8K is downright silly on a 55" TV.

I didn't say I want it... I was wondering when they're going to shove it down our throats like they tried to do with 3D TV.

I don't see the point in that anytime soon. 4K TV programming still barely exists.
It doesn’t exist because American media and infrastructure companies are cheap.

South Korea and Japan have had 4K transmissions for at least 5 years. Our live 4K is few and far between, and still IP streaming. No OTA 4K.

2023, and yet STILL no way to simply backup the Apple TV and restore to a new one. I would upgrade, however couldn't be bothered setting up each and every app/ streaming service.

Why do you need to do a backup/restore for the ATV?
I would like a backup and restore feature.

One Home is supposed to be a solution, but it literally does not work for me, and every time I try it, it screws with how my apps or organized causing me to have to reorganize it the way I want it.

Even if it did work, there are limitations, such as not restoring apps that are no longer on the App Store, and issues with mixed-matched storage sizes.

@bLackjackj was wanting to backup and restore the Apple TV to being able to have all the streaming services set up and signed in. This doesn't really bother me as much, but can understand why one might want something like this.

I would want a backup/restore to be able to keep old version of apps, and go back to them if I needed to. This is especially important for apps that are no longer on the App Store, or have an update that breaks it.

The difference between the 2021 and 2022 models is really minor unless you absolutely must have USB-C on your remote
There are some pretty big difference for playing games on the two models. Actually, both have pros and cons.

The 2022 model with the A15 chip has a decent performance upgrade over the 2021 with the A12, but the 2022 lacks a fan.

For a lot of games, the 2022 model can sustain higher graphic settings and overall looks better than the 2021.

The problem is with games that really push the GPU limit of the Apple TV, since the 2022 ATV4K3 doesn't have a fan, the 2021 ATV4K2 can actually outperform the ATV4K3.

Some people (including myself) have added heat sinks to the top of the 2022 ATV4K3 to try to keep the temps down when playing games.

The recently added game, Wreckfest, is a good example of where the 2022 ATV4K3 looks amazing, but only for the first few minutes of playing with the high graphic settings, then it starts thermal throttling and the game becomes really unstable, frame rate drops, crashes, etc.

The 2021 ATV4K2's fan allows for almost as good settings as the 2022 model, but keeps the frame rate stays flat and stable.

I think Apple screwed up the ATV4K3, they should have included a fan in the 128GB model.

Oh yeah, that is another big benefit of the 2023 model, the larger storage!

I've been so happy with my 2022 Apple TV. Yeah, these things cost more than most streaming boxes, but the experience is so much better, and also way better than the software built into most TVs.

I legit *TRIED* to use the built in TV software on my new Samsung but within a few hours I came right back to Apple TV.

There‘s one thing that drives me a little nuts with Apple TV. If I pause a movie and it goes into screensaver mode, when I then click a button to bring back the Apple TV controls, the focus is on the subtitles option. I don’t want to be messing about with the subtitles! I want to press the play button to carry on watching the movie!

So how much excessive heat damage do these refurbs have? Did they test it? It only has 1 year of guarantee vs a new one 2 years… and this heat problem will increase over the years with more demanding games, 4K 100mbps movies. I think I’ll pass.

At the very least, this will be a nice upgrade for my old Samsung 4K HDR+ TV up front. I have noticed how much more vibrant content looks on YouTube with HDR+ enabled and a supported video. Same for Prime Video as well.

gaming on tvOS is a complete waste of time. its only there so apple can charge for another subscription and devs can keep pushing their shovelware.

Arcade is literally the weakest aspect of apple's lineup aside from siri lol
