Maybe it depends how you request it to be held. If you have to call the 800 number to request that, maybe they somehow tack a fee on, but I happen to know the phone number of my local UPS hub and they just take my tracking number and say they will put a hold on it for me to pick up. If the location is close and you don't know the phone number, you could just go over there to request that.

Correct, there are lots of misinformation everywhere.
In the old days, all phones came in from China and distributed pallets to different carriers and Apple Stores just before launch day.
Nowadays, Apple has smartly distributed way ahead of launch day to carriers & Apple stores. TMO already has the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max in their US warehouses.
In addition to my iPhone 12 from a nearby Apple warehouse on launch day via Ground service; I also had a Mac Mini on launch day arrive from Bloomington, CA warehouse which normally supplies Apple Stores via FedEx Ground on time.
So everyone needs to get out of their "old thinking"....

Not completely true. The AT&T phones are only locked if you choose the AT&T financing/payment plan.
I agree with this. Within the last 14 years. I've never paid UPS a fee to hold my package. They always let me go pick it up. Maybe things have changed?
With the screwup for the annual upgrade people using Apple Pay last year, when Apple finally got around to getting our 4 phones to us on launch day we ended up receiving 2 from China, 1 from California, and 1 from Pennsylvania. These were all ordered directly from Apple, not a carrier, and all arrived on launch day. So there's multiple routes to customers.

Yeah they shouldn’t be attacking you. OP is the one that is blatantly making up things and misleading people.
My order is saying delivery 10/3-10/10. Ordered about 10ths after preorders opened. Any chance I could get it before then?
The majority of us, Actually all of us have UPS scans coming straight from China. So, I don't think anyone in here is expected to receive their iPhones from stateside. The tracking #'s were generated for Wave 1 and Wave 2 and they are strictly coming from China. When it comes to the carrier they hold a different inventory from the consumers.
Regardless, they are not allowed or will not release the iPhones to the consumer until the launch date.

It’s showing a $5.99 charge for me too. I’m just going to wait until it hits the states to see if that makes a difference.
What's what I would do... Alaska >>>> Kentucky. 8-hour flight. Plenty of time to submit a request.

I'm pretty sure I called the central UPS number last year and got it held at my local CC for free. Haven't called them yet this year, though.

Would be interesting to see how many apple.com orders don't originate from china.

I think Apple has learned from their past shipping logistics.
One year I had ordered the 2019 Macbook Pro (Intel) via pre-order from Apple and it did not make the launch day delivery due to China to UPS hub customs delay thru ANC.
Since then, other Apple products started arriving ahead of launch day and shipped local when possible.
That time I ordered 2 iPhones, 1 was a carrier order locally from a warehouse and 1 was from Apple (China)- both made it on launch day, but 2 different common carriers (UPS and FedEx).
No one is attacking anyone here and everyone is welcome here to comment with respect.
Also, no one is misleading people. That is not the goal. We are all speculating. People like @beach bum @SisterBlue22 @julit0 so many more... including myself have been doing this for years. We are here to help each other. Positive vibes only. Thank you and I hope you have a wonderful day.

EVERY phone ordered directly from apple.com (this is the apple.com order thread) COMES FROM CHINA!
No one said there weren't phones already here being distributed by carriers or Apple Stores. But the fact is, that's irrelevant in a thread where we are tracking our phones FROM CHINA.

We'll see - some Apple.com shipments may originate from a Apple Warehouse in the US as we all know iPhones are already here.
I have seen some Apple devices shipped from an Apple warehouse direct to me so it's very possible they will use the Apple Store inventory to ship to those that have freight delays from international shipping (customs, weather, local transport)....
