I'll save you some heartache: You can get a Rivian R1T and get up to 135 KWh now, or a Hummer EV with 212 KWh, but the fun part is when you need 150-350 KW chargers from Electrify America so that your charge doesn't take 2 days and you find that every charging station has half the chargers not working or working sub-optimally. And then after spending the $90k+ on one of these you can't go too far and you should've just stuck with gas, even a hybrid like this Tundra.

Source is Out of Spec reviews on Youtube whose reporting on charging network reliability has indicated that the only nationwide CCS charging network (Electrify America) is only good about half the time, the others aren't nationwide (EVGo), or Tesla-only Superchargers. This has to improve before these cars are good for anything other than grocery-getters or commuters.
You're preaching to the choir. EA is a dumpster fire right now. I really hope the change in leadership gets that network back on track. It's why a Cybertruck is the only EV pickup I'll consider at this point.

But my larger point is Toyota is screwed. They are the biggest EV laggard out of the legacy OEMs. Their gas car sales are getting eaten up by EVs. It costs the same to lease a Model 3 as a Corolla, and that's before factoring fuel costs.

I never understand this sort of thing. People/companies act like "hands off" is the most important, end-all/be-all thing. But how in God's name is something like this NOT a genuine distraction of a completely different kind?

My first post here and I'm sure that's going against the grain of a tech-oriented joint, but I'm being sincere in my question. Am I the only person left in the solar system who just gets in his car and drives from point A to B without all the noise, color, "entertainment", video, things talking to me, stuff to look at/read, etc. I'm just in a regular car, not a fighter jet or the space shuttle. It sure feels like it most days. :)

Being in the car is my break/time AWAY from all this stuff (tech, gadgets, buttons, beeps, boops, dings, bells, chirps, alerts, notifications, updates, texts, calls, emails, notices, etc.). I've come to cherish it in recent years.

Disclaimer: I've used Macs, exclusively, since 1993 and iPhones since the original model, July 2007. So I'm no Luddite, anti-anything, technophobe or the dreaded "boomer"; I've made my living with Apple (and Adobe) products, for well over two decades now (creeping up on three). I just don't see how a big colorful screen with things taking place on it is somehow automatically "safe", just because it's "hands-free". It's still a form of distraction, isn't it?

What they don't tell you is that you can only get this with a new, hybrid engine of questionable reliability. Maybe this screen is supposed to entertain you when you get stuck in the boonies.

Most vehicles with these large screens have the ability to multi-task - Toyota just scales up what would have been on a small screen and makes it huge. Pretty easy to do - now let's see CarPlay on the left upper quadrant - traffic on another quadrant - sports scores on a third one - and 'Office Space' playing on the 4th... Of course while parked :)

That would be impressive - not just a single option blown up to 14"

No, I can't stand the big displays in cars. In fact I am quite turned off from even considering a newer model Toyota because of those screens. 1.). a huge distraction 2.) Don't need the glaring light and 3.). I want my dash clear so I can see the road in front of me!

Love my smart phone, smart speakers and TV at home but I like cars to be more "old school" and less everything electronic. Can't stand exclusive power windows either.

The factory Qi Wireless Charger is known to be absolute trash.

Signed,
2022 Toyota Tundra Platinum Owner
20,000 miles and counting
March 6, 2023 will be one year of ownership

It can.
I have a Lincoln Nautilus and feel the same. The charger is slow slow that wireless CarPlay consumes more battery power on long trips than the charger can replenish. I caved in and started plugging it in. (Though I give the Nautilus props for having a USB-C port).

I like a vehicle with knobs, switches, mirrors. What I do not need is a moving home entertainment center that studies have calculated to be at least 30% add on to every vehicle. A $30,000 vehicle is now a $39,000. Not including the increases in interest, depreciation, repair and insurance costs.

Cybertruck is another year.

Toyota isn’t screwed. EVs aren’t ready yet for pickups and SUVs. A Rivian ain’t gonna outsell a Silverado or Suburban and don’t make me laugh about the Cybertruck. And tons of people aren’t in the market for EVs in smaller cars too. A Model 3 last I checked starts in the 40s and a Corolla about 20,000.

Something about the display looks awe full, I think it’s the way they tried to look more integrated into the dashboard, which I prefer(I hate the giant iPad stuck to the dashboard look). I think it’s the way the vents are shaped in comparison to the rest of the interior, there doesn’t seem to be a cohesive design language throughout. It might be picky, but if Im buying a $40K vehicle, I expect it to look nice.

It's not a look that I lament or desire, it's a certain level of intuitive function that I miss. :) I don't miss/need green felt and woodgrain but I appreciated when it was obvious what was a button vs. info-only vs. the background, for sure. Some apps and areas of iOS today "get it" and reverted away from the iOS7 silliness, which is a good sign.

Touchscreens in cars...it's just physics...cars are not the same as sitting in a chair at home. Car rides are bumpy and sometimes locating then actually pressing a small tap area on a CarPlay screen is an exercise in repeated tries and frustration. Plus driving a car should require focus on the road ahead, not re-pressing the icon you missed the 1st or 2nd time. The Carplay home screen is fine, for example; large buttons with good spacing. But finding and pressing any tiny "buttons" like the icons on this screen are atrocious for any driver of a moving vehicle.

Physical buttons for primary radio/HVAC controls all the way.
I use small pieces of Scotch 33+ electrical tape on the left side of my car's screen so I can change apps by feel. I have need to change the positions of the tape after one iOS update. Thankfully the car has assisted driving for when I need to look at its screen before and when touching.

The interior on my Platinum is as good or better than our previous Lexus RX350 F-Sport Performance.
I could see that since both are Toyota. Lexus also has a cheaper feel than other “luxury” interiors. Heck the ram 1500 limited is nicer on the inside than a Lexus.

Do you listen radio in your car? In that case CarPlay is more or less the same. Personally car is the only place where listening podcasts is good for me. Other things (e.g. messages ) can be notified shutdown if you want to

Never thought I'd be considering replacing mine ( 2019 ) with a newer model of the same vehicle ( Lexus GX 460 ) just because of CarPlay / AA !! .. Can't wait for the damn interest rates to reset!
Just get a carlink wireless carplay adapter.

I'm sure it's already been said in this thread, but those air vents on either side of the screen look ugly as ****. Toyota really needs to rethink that design.

I said "lease." $0 down 36-months 10k miles

$477/month - 2023 RWD Model 3 ($1,172 due at signing)
$529/month - 2023 base Corolla ($725 due at signing)

The Tesla is $1,425 cheaper (before taxes) over three years than that base Corolla in Palo Alto, CA.

I would like to see the people at Apple using their brains to design an awesome e-bike or e-scooter one day soon. Cars, especially this big, are useless in dense cities.

14”, a full review and not one times I read the resolution: always 800x600?
It’s me or with a 14” full screen it’s hard to be focused on the road?
Ok, it’s a pickup, nothing interesting to drive, potentially a weapon for its weight drove by distracted driver, but what’s the limit? 60” is enough?

Wait…

I have to consciously remember to monitor and plan my daily commute around when to make a unscheduled stop, quite often before/after a long day of work, to fill a tank with the expensive explosive remnants of prehistoric organisms to make it work? I’m paying $50-100+ also, each time?

It also requires this major inconvenience frequently, like several times a week/month for the duration of ownership?

It additionally needs $50 “oil change” work every 3-5000 miles to ensure that my warranty stays valid, and that I can continue the privilege to pay $50-100 a few times a month?

I have to test it’s “emissions” every two years to be allowed to continue to drive it, so that we can rest assured that it only puts the minimal amount of gases into our shared atmosphere, the one that we all breathe the same air from?

Ok sold!

You can pry my ICE keys from my dead fingers stuck frozen to this gasoline pump nozzle for the 7th time this month….. which is pumping out the beautiful combination of future GHG emissions and engine sludge in this 0° frigid weather.

Am I aware that the typical destinations for my daily trips are less than 50 miles round trip on average, so that even a regular 110v wall plug would recharge my battery overnight without any additional effort?

I am, but that kind of stuff doesn’t matter; please do not even bring it up.

My life is built on the convenience of gasoline. It’s available every time I stop for it, which is often. Ha, take that electric cars!

For me, It’s worth it not to risk having to deal with Plugshare for the one day every other month that I drive 500 miles, and have to make one single stop to refill an EV battery.

Try to beat gasoline, you lose!

You have a greater chance of winning the lottery than seeing a truck like this used for anything other than grocery-getting or commuting.

It's the new sedan. (And that's a bad thing for climate change & safety of people outside vehicles)
