I wonder if the Vikings will try to keep Sam Darnold
They're going to have a very tough decision to make... Darnold has been lights out... but they spent a top draft pick on McCarthy so he can be the teams starter. I think they sign Darnold and they have McCarthy start the season on the bench.... with the premise that they are letting him fully recover from his injury..... If Darnold continues to play the way he has then they look to trade McCarthy maybe.... Remember Darnold is only like 26 I think.

27 it turns out...I thought he was 28 but I looked it up....so he definitely has a good number of years left in his career. And who knows how well McCarthy will recover from his injury.

I hope they'll spend the money to keep Darnold, but they're going to have competition. When they didn't keep Cousins, I suspected it was partly because of his age (combined with the achilles injury).

And who knows how well McCarthy will recover from his injury.

McCarthy has now had a second surgery on his knee. So who knows if he will ever recover completely.

If they want to keep Darnold, they will have to pay him for sure, but at the same time, McCarthy isn't costing them anything (at least relative to cap) for 3 more years. So they can sign Darnold to a longish-term deal, say 5 years, but no guaranteed money after 3 and see where it goes.

Or they could franchise tag him, but given the high QB salaries, the FT will probably be north of $40M, so just go ahead and sign him.

I'd completely forgotten about him...

I'd say keep Darnold in the starting spot and let McCarthy be his understudy for a season or two.

If he's able to comeback it wouldn't surprise me if he was the starter by 2026... maybe even midway through the 2025 season.

IMHO except for this season Darnold has been pretty spotty throughout his career. I'd lay odds we're all surprised by his success this season.

He now has an offensive minded coach. He did well in SF under Shanahan (also offensive minded) as well.

But he was also in 2 organizations (Jets, Panthers) that are a mess, so no surprise he didn't do well.

An example for this year is Bo Nix. Not the most talented QB in his class, but look at who his coach is and you can see why he is doing well. Same with JD in Washington. While the HC is a defensive minded coach, he has a great OC which is why he is also doing very well for a rookie.

And then look at Williams and the train wreck in Chicago. Hope they don't ruin him before it's too late.

Yet he didn't stick in SF...

SF was always going to be a temporary stop for Darnold, to try to prove he wasn't a lost cause, and could rehab his reputation enough to get a better gig.

He's said that the coaches and players there taught him that a higher level of preparation existed, than what he'd experienced before, and was part of his learning experience.

So the Grumpy Hoodie is going back to the college coaching ranks at UNC.

Could be entertaining to see how he meshes with the modern NIL/transfer portal-emboldened college player.

His buddy Saban wanted none of that, or the current college game, which is a big part of why he quit.

It's a lot like dealing with pro players I'm sure...

This is true.

However I do wonder how his no-nonsense and always expecting perfection schtick will play with college kids.
Yeh, there was some speculation on espn's Pardon the Interruption about that as well tonight.

I wouldn't be surprised if "Chapel Hill Bill" could improvise and adapt though.

Time will tell.

Yes, in many respects. But pro players can't arbitrarily decide to enter the transfer portal at any time, and skip town, because the team isn't winning, they aren't getting enough reps, or some other personally-motivated reason. For now, there is still unrestricted free agency for everyone in college.

I think the basis of his philosophy ("Do Your Job") would work well with college kids, as long as they're reasonably talented.

The Pats enjoyed a long run of success despite not having a boatload of HoF or All-Pro players. Those teams weren't necessarily "loaded" teams with lots of top talent, like the dynastic 49ers, Cowboys, and other teams.

They had Brady, of course, which counts for a lot, and a few good supporting cast members, but it worked in large part because everyone played their role in the system, and did as he demanded.

If they recruit well and get the kids who will loyally buy into the system, it could work. And those kids will be better off for it.

Jim Harbaugh's rah-rah schtick is one that has proven to have a finite shelf life, and as a result, he's gone back and forth as his welcome has worn out.

That game last night was a debacle! Dee Bo Samuels... wow.

WOW pt. II De'Vondre Campbell literally quit during the game.

at the start of the season I sure didn't think it was possible that the 49ers wouldn't be in the playoffs

I'm still not sold on Purdy.

Let's face it, if you haven't won a SB title these days after a year or two in the league you aren't going to... I'm looking at you too Josh Allen...

Mahomes has got the next couple wrapped up.

They went from SB contenders to the bottom of their division in one season. Didn't see it coming either.

They probably didn't either.

A lot of things have to go right to make it to the championship, and then win it. The statistics show that most teams experience some kind of dropoff after SB seasons.

The oft-cited "window of opportunity" is limited, and in the salary cap era where depth is limited, injuries to the starters can drastically alter the trajectory of the team. Going deep into the playoffs means extra wear and tear on bodies, on top of normal aging. Big signings like Bosa and Deebo not playing up to their contracts doesn't help. Bringing in a free agent who doesn't fit into the culture of the team, like Campbell, another hit.

Whatever voodoo/alchemy the Chiefs are practicing is a secret, but the part that is known is the stability in their coaching staff, which has remained relatively intact long term. Bienemy left (and has kinda followed the same kind of trajectory the Pats assistant have) but Reid is still in charge, and has a stable group that has remained loyal.

As good as Shanahan is, he's yet to show he can get over the hump, and makes some puzzling decisions at times. His system certainly seems to chew up RBs. The team has cycled through multiple DCs, and has lost front office personnel to others.

Lastly, whether one believes in the curse or not, McCaffrey was most recently featured on the cover of Madden, and has missed most of the season.

That said, they're still starting from a better spot from which to reload or rebuild. The Rams are showing that with the right moves, it can be done relatively quickly.

The fans in NY, or Oakland Las Vegas probably wish to have the same problems, or expectations. Sorry Pach…

No apology necessary, you're correct and I'm well aware.

No one did. But it’s not the same team. They have so many injuries this season, they can’t get everyone from the SB playing on the field at the same time. So it’s not surprising.

And Campbell… it’s clear he wanted a quick SB win, so he joined the Niners to walk home with a ring. Since that didn’t work out he quit. Hope he’s blacklisted everywhere now and won’t play again. But as crooked as teams are, someone will probably pick him up next year.

Watching Steelers vs Eagles right now and it’s just not funny anymore how biased or incompetent the refs are. Eagles player starts a fight and Steelers get two flags… NFL should start suspending refs again.
