2024 Formula 1 Season thread

Just managed to watch Miami and it wasn’t a bad race. I feel like Vegas has made it all a little pointless though.
The first year it was all the US glitz and glamour but it’s had that stolen by Vegas so now it’s just another **** circuit in a car park.
If there has to be 3 races in the states surely we can get another great circuit to go with Texas.

I don’t really see who benefits from that. There’s 10 F1 teams who are all based in Europe they want to extract cash from America but they’re not going to vote to be culled to make way for Indy teams.
 
Alpine, the 2nd Red Bull team, McLaren, Williams, Hass, Kick. At least half the F1 teams are US owned, or could be US owned, as is F1 owned by a US interest.. So the idea of F1 being US is not beyond, look Andretti wants to join, where teams are based, and where they are owned are not related.. It makes no sense to base the teams in the UK, it would make more sense to base the teams in Portugal or Italy, or Germany, even Bulgaria, the UK hosts 1 event.. Europe more.. It would make a ton of sense to have F1 based in say Texas, so that freighting is all from point A to destination, all teams central to 1 hub.. But the point is, from 1 race to 3, and 4 if you count the republic of Montreal GP..

It seems so obvious with all the US interests in F1, that maybe at some point, one of the 2 is going to fade..

It makes no sense to base the teams in the uk?
Besides the fact the vast bulk of the workforce and supply chain are British? Ferrari are an outlier but who’s been successful and not been based in the UK?
It’s not even the UK it’s a very specific part of the south east of England.

Alpine is French owned and kick German (not in the UK either). McLaren is a British company even if the owners are overseas.
2nd red bull team is 51% Thai owned (also not in the UK)

The UK is in Europe so I don’t know why you’re saying Bulgaria which hosts none would be a better location.

F1 is owned by the FIA which is located in Paris. Americans own the commercial rights.

It is very complicated, and costly, with Brexit, costs are rising, so if you are relying on components that are imported at some point into the UK from the EU, and you are US owned, you don't have the costs if you are US based or EU based.. At some point with the cost caps, the beancounters are going to realize that beans are expensive in Blighty, and if we spend money now, we could save later, move the plant to Germany, Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, so that you don't incur the import duty..

Brexit was a bad idea...

Except this doesn’t come in to it for the cost cap as there’s offsets for being located in different regions.

Why are you paying import duty on products from the UK to teams based in the UK?
 
I want a certain widget, this widget relies on a cpu.. There is a cpu shortage at the moment, as well as shipping problems from China/Japan into the UK, ask any shopkeeper, getting goods into the UK, is an issue..

Not all widgets are made on the island, that widget, say the steering wheel, the wheel itself, may be molded in the UK, but the screen, the various internal chips that drive the screen, chips that are driven by buttons may come from a plant in say Bulgaria or Spain, or any one of 2 dozen countries NOT IN THE UK.. so there are those costs...

If 60% of your travel is EU, why not be in the EU? Or the US, for various reasons, the US has a boatload of great uni's all in the north east, great places to raise the herd of ankle biters.. But to be owned by US interests and do 99% of your events off the island. Logic really, it makes sense to move to the EU, or the US.. I am most probably wrong, but it somehow sort of makes sense..

Not sure why they are still UK based, at least 1/2 the field of 10 teams are owned by off shore interests.. And more US interests want to buy in, or buy outright if need be.. And to compete against Indy, or become Indy? Who knows.. just thinking out loud.. looking ahead, wondering.. Is this the future of F1?

I’m sure all those graduates from Bournemouth, Warwick, Oxford and Cambridge would love to move to Bulgaria with their families. Most of the grid are British and we have a very rich source for engineering here. I grew up in Banbury, Oxfordshire where F1 is very much around the area and teams are within 70 miles. Teams like Ferrari, Toro Rosso and Sauber are elsewhere in Europe and enjoy British input, but basing teams in North America would limit the choices teams have with finding the best engineers. Britain is the home of Formula 1 and we’ve kept the industry close with the talent pool here and the best resources for building the best race cars in the World. There is a very good reason why there are so many British teams, mostly with foreign names, but still. Not everyone wants to live abroad btw.

The parts are designed and made in the UK, teams aren’t paying import duty. F1 is also an R&D series and gets huge tax relief.

Yes, and I hope it stays that way, I am making the point of, it might, for various reasonable reasons. If the UK makes most of it's own parts, then why is Apple, HP, Dell, and a lot of other tech importing products from China and not from say east Oxford?

With so many US owners, and the company that uses US owned teams, all US, and 99% of the events are off shore, and all the travel that takes, if you gave the very tired staff an option of even more tired in the future, of 24-26 events a year, where they have to be away, or could be home in 2 hours if they move to say Spain, or France/Germany, Italy, in a brand new purpose built town, it would be hard to argue against the move.. Maybe you as the income earner, might be better of tax wise moving, having more Euro monthly... Or paying more tax in the UK, and more for fresh cauliflower due to Brexit...

It may/may not happen, but what if?

The parts Apple and other technology companies design are made in the far east because they are production parts that are not constantly being redesigned and tweaked in a competitive racing arena. F1 is an R&D series that feeds data into the car industry but is essentially a series of one off prototypes competing. You can’t compare it to a consumer OEM.

US interests bought into the brand for the marketing benefits. Haas initially planned to start off with a UK facility and then move to the US, but canned the idea after learning how much more beneficial it is to remain in the UK, and my hometown of Banbury. Renault looked to move to France 12 years ago but remained in Enstone. I’ve already briefly addressed the issue of tax as not to discuss political things, it’s irrelevant here. Paying relocation packages to move thousands of employees and their families abroad isn’t a cost teams need either.

Maybe F1 will eventually turn into another lower spec’d IndyCar series? Until then, let’s enjoy the best racings cars and the best engineers competing with each other. Teams are here because the best engineers are here and that pool keeps growing due to our universities.

You’re talking nonsense.
Canadian Lawrence Stroll has a lot more money than me and is far more successful in business than I am. I assume this also applies to you. He was seen fit to invest over £200m in a new factory in silverstone so I assume it makes a lot of sense for them to be based there.

Almost ended up being the 4 Hours of Spa after a massive crash by the Cadillac HyperCar with an hour-forty-five to go that resulted in a red flag that would have eaten the rest of the clock, however they repaired the track with ten minutes left and the FIA and Spa officials have reset the clock back to 1:45 and are about to restart so we will get a full race in.

Are you watching F1/FOM?

Was a great event. Yea, the Cadillac event was ballistic. Demonstration once again to the excellent designs and safety.

Porsche P1,P2. I’ll be honest. I was pulling for Ferrari.
