So the tires were stone cold so nobody improved except Daniel, who passed Yuki for 9th.

Yeah I think Max's setup is for the race, which is why he did not have the pace to challenge for qualifying. He and Checco ran hards almost all of FP3, only switching to qualifying simulation in the last 15 minutes.

Not sure what Perez needs to do to lose his seat! He has gone from bad to worse.

Nice 1-2 for McLaren. Can’t believe it’s their first since 2012. That’s a long time for such a prestigious team.

Goofing the wrong tyres in the race is one thing, goofing the fuel for a final run, and having to abort a fast lap, Merc really got that wrong.. I could be wrong, but I thought all cars had to have at least 1 litre of fuel for testing, maybe what happened is that Merc fueled the car for 3 laps, and oops that 1 litre reserve was going to be used.. That would get noticed by the tech regulation inspectors and George a pit lane start...

I disagree that Lando should have won. Oscar had the race in hand and Lando was put in P1 at the final stop purely due to McLaren allowing Lando in first to protect him in 2nd. If Oscar had pitted first as he had the right, he would have been P1 at the end.

Max had a 76-point lead coming in, so 8 points is not going to make a difference for Lando.

If I was Piastry I wouldn’t want my first win like that. He was well off the pace of Lando. I really don’t like team orders. If Piastry was quicker he should have overtaken Lando. 🤷‍♂️

Bit of an odd race today. The red bull cars looked weak and like they couldn’t turn.

Glad Oscar got a win but it’s a hollow one under the circumstances and I’d imagine that’s why he was so subdued on the radio. You never get that moment back and McLaren messed that situation up IMO. Lando is rightfully annoyed and they’ve now got a very tense debrief ahead I think.

Solid race by Lewis, he’s finding his groove again.

Might have worked in 2021 against Lewis as he was fighting for the WDC, but in 2024 Lewis is not fighting for the title so he’s not going to yield for Max his crazy ”yield or we crash” driving.

My thoughts on the race:

• Lando lost the race in the first corner of the first lap. If he had not tried to pinch Oscar and make him try to hit the brakes, he would not have left the racing line to Max. IMO, Lando was fortunate Oscar did not brake because if he had, Max would have made the corner and likely passed both McLarens and sailed off into the distance;
• Max sure was a whiny git the whole race. In the end, even Gianpiero finally had enough of his complaining and just told him to shut up.
• Russell and Perez for the most part did not impress. Not even able to get by Bottas with DRS? Frankly they were fortunate to finish 7th and 8th.
• What the heck were Aston and VCARB thinking starting Alonso, Lance and Daniel on Softs? Sure, if they had been 16-20 you throw them on and hope you make up a lot of spots at the start and then a Safety Car happens, but when you start 7th, 8th and 9th? It just ruined their races having to pit 5 laps in for the Hards they should have started on. At least Yuki benefitted from not being thrown under the bus and credit to Lance making those Softs work better to get past Alonso for 10th at the end.

I’ve never liked team orders and asking a driver to move aside to let the other win takes the edge off it for me. Sure Lando made errors but was back in front through the pit stops and was winning a race he’d qualified on pole for. Oscar must feel a little cheated by knowing he won his first race through team orders, I know I would.

Not looking for anybody to agree, it’s my point of view and it’s always been consistent with team orders.

It’s been a weekend to forget for Max to be honest, he’s moaned in every session, sounding on the verge of tears at one point, and his engineer has on multiple occasions told him the calm down or been snappy with him. Not sure what has gone on with that car these last few races?

It seems that Mclaren copied the Red Bull car successfully. Helmut Marko even gave Mclaren credits for having a "well-executed copy" of the RB20 car.

The big difference is, Norris is a much better driver than Perez.

The helmet just likes stirring with his comments or demotivating his drivers with completely unprofessional statements about them to the press. It’s a shame Red Bull lifted his ban on talking to the media so I wouldn’t pay too much attention to his comments about copying. F1 has always been about being the first to find the edge and then copying it. Aston Martin did something similar with Mercedes a few years back.

Just saw a clip of Lando being a bit of a moron in the cool down room. Lewis paid a compliment saying how fast they were and Lando awkwardly bit back saying ‘yeah you had a fast car 7 years ago and made the most of it, now it’s us’. It was like he thought Lewis was moaning or something but he clearly wasn’t. Possibly frustration from his team drama but awkward to watch all the same lol. I get the impression Lando doesn’t like Lewis very much and has made a few comments in recent seasons. Not sure why it is and although I like seeing Lando as a Brit doing well, he can come across as quite arrogant sometimes.

IMO, he was in front on pit stops only because McLaren allowed him to pit first. If Oscar had come in first, (IMO) he would have stayed in front.

Fair enough. I support team orders when they are there to benefit the team, and I believe they did so today for McLaren both in letting Lando pit first to protect a 2nd place finish and in letting Oscar back into a lead he legitimately (IMO) held the entire race until that final pit stop and (IMO) would have continued to hold if McLaren had let him pit first, even if it had meant Lando might have finished third or even off the podium. I wonder how Lando and his fans would be feeling about McLaren strategy if that had been the outcome...

As for the WDC, Max exits Hungary with a three DNF lead. Max can DNF the next three races and Lando can win all three and he will still be a point behind (not counting Fastest Lap points). The seven points Lando "gave up" today will likely make no difference to the WDC in the end - Lando will either win by a larger margin or he will lose by a larger margin.

And speaking of the WDC and CC, think how the team and driver dynamics would be if it became apparent that it was a free for all each race and team orders and decisions meant nothing. We saw how the relationship between Vettel and Webber disintegrate after "Multi-21" in Malaysia 2013 and Horner and Marko going "sucks to be you, Mark" after it happened poisoned that team as both drivers and their staff adopted an "us or them" attitude where they put themselves and not the team first for the rest of the season and Red Bull never saw another WDC until 2021.

And let us not forget Mark is Piastri's manager. Screwing over Piastri in Hungary like Red Bull screwed over Webber in Malaysia would not do them any favors come the next contract negotiation if McLaren wants to re-sign Piastri.
