While it is the best entertainment device on the market, people sleep on the productivity aspect, the mac virtual displays, and running your apps floating around you while in a virtual environment is game changing. Ask the demo person if you can try those features
They were unable to demonstrate the Mac virtual display due to there not being a connected Mac computer nearby, but I did get to see the virtual environment, which was very cool.
The hardware impressed me very much. I can’t really criticize it.
The weight distribution with this new dual headband was perfection IMO.
The display quality was also excellent. Sure, a little more field of view will be welcome someday, but it didn’t really feel significantly lacking.
The passthrough was solid. Not perfect, but it was the night and day difference I expected compared to the super grainy black & white PSVR2 passthrough. I’m sure improvements in that department will also be welcome, but I wasn’t disappointed in its current quality.
The audio was impressive and I love that you don’t have to have earbuds in your ears.
The pinch and eye tracking controls were intuitive. No problems there. The icons felt stable and easy to differentiate from the outside environment.
I think the only thing it needs now is more content.
I don’t know if I didn’t enable it fully or what, but the immersive experience for F1 that Joseph Kosinski introduced was lackluster IMO. I was hoping for an experience like when I play Gran Turismo 7 on my PS5 with the PSVR2, but it was just a little more image and perhaps more dimensionality than just watching it on a virtual TV. Definitely not immersive IMO. Almost boring.
The Dinosaur Experience (or whatever its name is) was cool. The butterfly landing on your finger was neat and the dinosaur entering your environment was a nice effect. I wanted to be able to interact with the dinosaur, like pet it, but no such luck. Still, the visuals there were impressive. Very good dimensionality.
The panoramic photos were captivating for a few moments, and the spatial photos and videos were magical. Those will really shine when they’re photos or videos from your own life.
I was sold on the hardware, but the lack of wow moments in terms of content is what held it back for me. I actually watched a clip of the Super Mario Brothers Movie and maybe the screen needed to be enlarged, but I didn’t notice impressive dimensionality there. I would primarily use this to watch movies (since Apple isn’t big on gaming), so I was disappointed there. Possibly a user error or a not-so-impressive clip.
I see a ton of potential here. Hopefully it evolves now that there’s an M5 version and that new developer strap? I actually would enjoy watching Disney+ content where it puts you in an iconic environment. But that’s something that’s been there since the beginning. We need more content. The sports applications make sense. Hopefully more interesting ideas come along too.
