2027 iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e to Get 9GB RAM and A20 Chip

9GB of RAM doesn’t make sense. I never heard of any device with that amount of RAM. Why bother when the 18 will still be unable to use the most advanced AI feature just like 17.

$899 for a 512GB Neo 2 won’t be that enticing, unless you get a discount at Amazon or another retailer.

This is the exact same confusion that occurred when Apple released the 18 GB MacBook Pro.

It's all relative. The 13" 16/512 GB MacBook Air is $1299 retail / $1199 edu.

Currently the 8/512 GB MacBook Neo is $799 retail / $699 edu.

The price increase to go from a rumoured 12/512 GB MacBook Neo 2 to the MacBook Air on the education store at various price points would be:

$699 Neo 2 --> $1199 Air (+72%)
$749 Neo 2 --> $1199 Air (+60%)
$799 Neo 2 --> $1199 Air (+50%)

However, I'm more concerned about Canadian edu pricing:

$1019 Neo 2 --> $1659 Air (+63%)
$1089 Neo 2 --> $1659 Air (+52%)
$1159 Neo 2 --> $1659 Air (+43%)

Either way, at those prices, I'd be getting my kid the 12/512 GB Neo 2 over the Air next year, unless the Neo 2 has a terrible Back-To-School offer. We probably will see this week how well the Neo 1 fares in the BTS promotion this year.

9Gb is actually a good sign. This totally makes sense, if you think about LPDDR6, which has a 12 bit bus. It just means 6 channels of LPDDR6, which will be quite fast. The pro chip is believed to have 8 channels of LPDDR6 making it 12 Gbytes with about 127 Gbytes per second bandwidth. 6 channels means 9 Gbytes of memory with 95 Gbytes per second bandwidth.

Some are saying the timeline may not work for LPDDR6 (for these types of volumes). It may be a faster LPDDR5X.

The price of memory is now "shocking". Which is to say, I hope that software companies like Apple and Microsoft re-factor some of their assumptions about how much memory we all will be running in. e.g. I noticed that 26 seemed to want more memory. I hope Apple will squeeze memory requirements back down a bit.
 
It’s good to see Microsoft extending Windows 10 support to October 2027.

It’s another ding against Satya Nadella, who needs to resign.
