running at 207 degrees is way to much. My CPUs temp on my MBP goes between 120 and 160. Seems like the thermal paste on you CPU might not have been properly applied, or there was not enough of it. I would take it into Apple.

You said you left it on the couch and it got that hot??? How long was it on the couch for? I have left mine on the bed for a few minutes, and it gets hot really quickly. The bed/couch retains heat.

Might want to try some compressed air near the ports just to make sure it's not obstructed too.

the biggest problem is that this is my business critical computer. I cant just ship it off for a week and be without a machine. this poses the biggest problem.

I have to second the idea that you need to consider getting some backup hardware. If your hardware is truly that critical to you, then you do need to consider having a Plan B. And no, this isn't just because this is an Apple product. I'd recommend the same to any person that relied on a single Dell, or HP, or Lenovo or even a Toughbook. Hardware failures happen regardless of who you buy it from. It's a fact of life, and if a computer is mission critical, then you need to be prepared to replace it quickly if and when it fails or needs to be sent it for service.

I realize you probably don't feel like being preached to right now, but given your account of your previous experiences with Apple MacBooks, this is something you should have probably considered by now.

That said, there are a number of places that offer short term rentals of Apple laptops:

Many more are listed if you check out google.

i dont think apple should be pissing off members of the working press...

I highly doubt Apple sought to piss you off deliberately, unless you wrote something already that Steve Jobs didn't care for. :)

i own a small business, and just sold my imacs to go for buying powermacs or mac pros. those purchases havent been completed yet due to transactions, etc.

i would never in a million years have only one machine normally. thats just stupid. its just taking days to get the new ones

on a MBPro? on my MBPro 2.16 istat show only CPUA lke on the OP'S screenshot.

There is only ONE processor on the machine so it should only show ONE processor's temperature. It has dual cores, but i guess both cores would be at the same temperature. On the MP's with quad procs it should show TWO temperatures because they have two dual-cores.

To the OP, that is seriously NOT normal. Could be related to thermal paste. Has this problem been there since day one or only recently been happening?

I'd for the time being go buy a Targus Chillpad or something to help lower them temps.

Thats insane man, I bet you could fry an egg on that sucka.

i have a laptop stand, im not going to spend money on the laptop that from day one has been hot, but not this hot. (or i havent noticed because it sits on the stand on my desk, or whenever im on the road.

does anybody know any special phone numbers i can call to get in touch with managers, supervisors, customer satisfaction staff, etc.

thanks

just an update....the apple store is pending approval on repairing my laptop...saying it could be "my fault" somehow....

wow

Thing with the MBP's is the air vents are at the bottom (just below the screen hinge). A certain amount of heat is dispatched through the keyboard, but the vast majority is through these air vents.

If you cover these up (i.e. sitting it on your lap when wearing baggy clothing, or sitting it on a cushion/bed etc) then there is little circulation of air.

I find if I'm pushing my MBP to its limits when it is sitting on my desk, the temperature can 160'F - but if it is on my lap or something obstructing the air vents it can get way higher.

If you aren't running anything too demanding and you are getting high core temperatures then you got a problem.

i also noticed now that the front part of the case is starting to separate from the bottom case.

friggin rediculous...and thank god for burn cream..

With all due respect but you should definitely have some sort of backup solution or Plan B if you may.

Having a notebook as your primary computer is a gamble if you do not have a secondary stationary or notebook computer at hand.

Last time Apple agreed to send me a replacement unit before I had to send my old one in. Made it a bit easier to do a full backup :) Haven't had a single problem since that.

Apple is right to investigate. If you've had 8 replacements (or whatever it was you were on about with the blackbooks) I do think it is you that is doing something wrong. For one thing, stop running a laptop with its vents against sofas and clothes and whatever else. They need air. That thing might be getting too hot but you are not helping it.

Use one of thse
. (or something like it) I swear by it. My powerbook's fans almost never come on (unless I am at like 100% CPU) and it's very comfy.

Good luck.

i have 2 laptop stands, just like the link...i use them 99.9 percent of the time. The thing runs hot (these 200 degree temps) even when using the laptop stand

i had 8 macbooks because each one, right out of the box, had problems, not my user error or damage. i have been a long time mac user, and also very anal retentive about my computer products (comes from being a photographer)

does anybody have any special phone numbers to get in touch with the supervisors/higher ups/not just regular CS at apple??

go straight to the man himself if you feel like your case is worthy: steve@mac.com I believe is Steve Jobs' e-mail

Dude 8?! You have got to be kidding me. Please humor us all and tell us what problem each one had. :)

The fan speeds look too low, it could be that your fans aren't speeding up soon enough. I have a genuine rev A MBP 2.0Ghz CD which I bought in April last year when they first appeared on the shelves of the local store. At first it was extremely hot running. Far too hot to have it sit on my lap and the heat coming from the case just above the function keys was unbearable to touch. Apple released some firmware updates which improved the temperatures pretty quickly but for a while I sat at my desk with two fans blowing across my laptop which was also propped up on a book to help the air flow. Gradually, updates to software allowed us to see the temperatures and fan speeds which showed just how hot the thing was. Then the release of Fan Control solved the problem for me as I was able to adjust the temperature thresholds and get it to stay nice and cool. Now I have the base speed set to 1000 RPM, lower threshold at 50C and upper at 80C. The machine has been running on my lap for the last couple of hours and the fan speeds are about 1800RPM and the temperature is sitting at about 33C on the bottom of the enclosure. This is very comfortable to use and needs no additional cooling at all. If I push the machine hard, the fan speeds crank up nicely keeping the CPU at about 70C (158F) even with both cores at 100%. The base enclosure temp can get a little warm then but it wouldn't cause any harm.

Anyone who has a hot MacBook should definitely give Fan Control a try (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23137)

i use fan smc fan control...have it set to run at 3000 rpms when temps rise above 150 F.

this has not helped one bit.

it also has all firmware updates, etc. done.

anybody have any definitive email addresses, phone numbers?
