i use fan smc fan control...have it set to run at 3000 rpms when temps rise above 150 F.
this has not helped one bit.
it also has all firmware updates, etc. done.
anybody have any definitive email addresses, phone numbers?
I don't think 3000 RPM is enough when the machine is running flat out. Mine hit 4500 easily and this keeps the machine comfortably cool. I used smc fan control initially but much prefer the interface to FanControl because it allows you to set the slopes and thresholds in an intuitive way.
197. 198 is much too hot.wow, thats hot! What temp should they be running at?
I don't mean to sound insensitive, but this is exactly why people who use computers for a living should have at least two. Do yourself a huge favor and go buy another computer, even if it's a cheap used PowerBook. I know it sucks right now, but in the future you'll be glad you did. I've always kept two computers having learned from having external monitors die on desktops and such.
Thats right...my macbook pro burned the Sh*t outta my legs when i set it on my lap on the couch.
i immediately went to istat and it was running right around 200 degrees F, while running hard on both fans...
something is seriously wrong with my MBP...its almost at the boiling point!!!
should i demand replacement or has anybody ran into this problem before???
also ive noticed pitting on the casing, and a whining noise from the laptop.
Apple calls the MacBook Pro and MacBook 'portables' for a reason. You're packing everything (in the case of a 17") that's in an imac into a space one third the size. Of course its going to get hot.
Apple recommends that you use the computer on a hard, flat surface. Your lap and the couch do not qualify. You blocked the air vents and wonder why it got hot. You added a 3rd party software modification that controls the fans and wonder why it got hot. Then you blame Apple.
If you don't know how to read a user guide, don't blame Apple.

its actually shut off a buncha times for no reason, that probably is why.
playing a dvd is one thing where its got alot of moving parts going...but im not doing that intensive of stuff and its still running hot. when i took that screen capture, the fans were at 2000ish rpms, but really it fluctuates from 2-4000
If you actually burned your legs and have evidence sue Apple. You can be as rich as that lady that sued McDonalds cause of hot coffee spilled in her lap.![]()
I've had a similar problem where my MBP got to 190F. The fans would not automatically run, and were at 2000RPM. I did some quick research and found that the SMC controller controlled the fans. Maybe try resetting your SMC controller?
(Disconnect AC, pull out battery, hold power button down for about 10 - 15 seconds, put battery back in, plug the power cable back in)
See if that helps at all...
EDIT: I just noticed how old this thread was... maybe this can help someone else.
According tot that the bottom of your macbook pro was only 103 degrees- hot but still not extremely hot. Still worth getting it looked at.
My Macbook seems hotter after Apple replaced the upper case after it cracked.![]()
I could have but it would have voided my warranty if they found out. The left side of my case is a little loose now and the trackpad jumps around occasionally.Apple does not help that much at all in that situation.
Could you have replaced the case yourself?
