@Relentless Power moved into the Top 10, pushing out mkrishnan.
@Scepticalscribe moved up 2 positions, slipping past @C DM only in the last week or so. She continues to have the highest post rate of all tracked users, and the only member to post at an average rate faster than once per hour.
@Doctor Q gained over 1000 posts! Many dormant members also gained posts! What's going on here?! Has @mad jew returned?!! The explanation for this is below, in the post "A November Anomaly"!
There's a bit of a horse-race in the range around rank 25. @I7guy and @The Game 161 rapidly advanced into positions 26 and 27. Meanwhile, @eyoungren and @Rogifan at 24 and 25 haven't been idle, with over 500 posts each.

We say au revoir to @jav6454 and @-aggie-, who fell out of the Top 50.

A November Anomaly

In Table 1, a number of previously dormant users had increased post counts. These were often small to moderate gains, but if you were to look at their post history and their Profile Page, you'd see that they haven't actually posted recently, or even logged in for years.

Some current and former staff members also increased their post counts. For some, the gain was substantial, such as @Doctor Q increasing by over 1000 posts. For others, the gain was more modest, such as @mad jew, a former moderator, who gained a mere 5 posts. Still, a gain of 5 posts without even logging in is a notable achievement.

So what happened?

In the latter half of November, @arn created a new Political News forum, where all News articles with political or controversial content would be placed. Previously, such News articles were placed in the Politics, Religion, and Social Issues forum (PRSI), along with member-created threads. The distinction now is that the new Political News forum will only have News articles, leaving PRSI with only member-created threads.

After creating the Political News forum, all the past News articles from PRSI were moved to the new forum. So far, so good, but there was one minor problem: posts in PRSI aren't counted towards member post-count totals, but that feature was accidentally left off the new Political News forum. This wasn't discovered until I ran my usual weekly post-count data collection, and saw some astonishing jumps in several user post-counts. I tracked the problem down and let Arn know, and he fixed it by making Political News uncounted. Unfortunately, the only way to fix the total post-counts was to recalculate them all, for every user, across every counted forum.

That would be the end of the story, except there's a long-running forum used only by staff, which had gone back and forth between being counted and uncounted. As a result, staff members who had posted there during its uncounted time suddenly gained credit for those posts. We did expect this to happen, so were prepared to see changes for current and former staff.

Again, that might be the end of the story, but the recount apparently found even more posts that had gone uncounted. I don't know where those lost posts were found, because all I have are post-count totals from before and after. They might have fallen into a wormhole, or behind the sofa cushions, or whatever the equivalent is for forum software.

I've reached this conclusion because not every dormant user who gained posts was a staff member, yet those users have definitely not made any posts recently. For example, @miles01110 and @PlaceofDis have never been moderators or admins, as far as I can tell. They can't have gained posts due to the staff-forum recount, because they have no posts there. Neither user has made any posts in over 5 years, yet each gained a handful of posts. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The main result of this anomaly is that post-rates for some staff (current or former) are higher than expected in this 6-month period. Since the change happened all at once, there's a distinct jump in post-counts for that fateful week in November.

Another result is that some long-dormant users, including non-staff, appear to be active in this 6-month period, though often at low rates. This makes the graphs that omit inactive users unusually busy this time around, but it should die down next time.

The graphs of weekly activity, which I'll post later, show a marked jump in some user's post-counts for the week when the recount occurred.

One result casts an even longer shadow: mad jew's benchmark post count is now 5 higher than it's been for over a decade. This means that surpassing his benchmark count will now take 5 more posts than it did before. I've made the adjustment in the current projections, so @Relentless Power has 5 more posts to make than @Apple fanboy did to pass mad jew. At his current rate, that should take less than a day. Other users with lower rates won't be as fortunate.

Active & Prolific Posters

This time, there are very few inactive members in Table 1, due to the November Anomaly. As a result, Table 2 is almost the same as Table 1. This issue should disappear next time.

Table 3 lists members ranked in order of post rate. Again, the November Anomaly's effects are evident in current and former staff having above-average 6-mo post counts.

@AustinIllini is the most prolific poster outside the Top 50 of Table 1.
@EugW advanced in post-count rank by 83 positions, which is the largest increase in all 400+ users I have data for.

Can this discrepancy be accounted for, for those threads that were public at one point but needed to be removed for various rules reasons been threads that were moved to the staff forum as an alternative to outright deletion? Perhaps those threads for the dormant users were previously uncounted and now due to the recent changes are being counted?

Only @Relentless Power is projected to surpass @mad jew in the next 6 months.

The worst projection is for @Jaffa Cake, who gained 1 post in the November Anomaly. Since @mad jew gained 5 posts, the benchmark moved even farther away. Sigh.

Prediction Scoring

In July 2019, I compared the Table 4 projections from Jan 2019 with the actual Table 1 results of July, to see how well the previous projections aligned with the July reality.

Sadly, the November Anomaly would make any comparison pointless. The reality is that nearly all the inactive members in the Top 50 gained posts. Furthermore, some current or former staff members had significant gains, sometimes in the 100's of posts. This wasn't in any projection, so a comparison would be meaningless.

The anomaly will also affect the next statistics in July 2020, because projections are made using the prior 6-month's post-count change. Anyone who gained posts due to the anomaly will have a projected count based on that gain, even if they haven't logged in for years. So in July, the actual post-counts should be back to normal, but the projections will still be wonky, so again no comparison can be made.

Only @Relentless Power is projected to surpass @mad jew in the next 6 months.

The worst projection is for @Jaffa Cake, who gained 1 post in the November Anomaly. Since @mad jew gained 5 posts, the benchmark moved even farther away. Sigh.

Prediction Scoring

In July 2019, I compared the Table 4 projections from Jan 2019 with the actual Table 1 results of July, to see how well the previous projections aligned with the July reality.

Sadly, the November Anomaly would make any comparison pointless. The reality is that nearly all the inactive members in the Top 50 gained posts. Furthermore, some current or former staff members had significant gains, sometimes in the 100's of posts. This wasn't in any projection, so a comparison would be meaningless.

The anomaly will also affect the next statistics in July 2020, because projections are made using the prior 6-month's post-count change. Anyone who gained posts due to the anomaly will have a projected count based on that gain, even if they haven't logged in for years. So in July, the actual post-counts should be back to normal, but the projections will still be wonky, so again no comparison can be made.

Fascinating.

Now, I did notice that sometime in November I seem to have inexplicably gained a number of posts ; I didn't comment on it, - here or to the mods - assuming that it was simply some manner of glitch in the system that would be attended to, in due course, as indeed transpired.

However, within a short period of time, that had been remedied, and the number was adjusted to reflect some sort of new normal.

I admit that until just now, when you @chown33 - have raised this in this thread, I had entirely forgotten about it.

Nevertheless, even with wonky figures, some sort of projections - which have been pretty (sometimes exceedingly) accurate until now, may well be possible, but this is not a field in which my expertise lies.

The only way that would explain things is if forum search isn't searching everything.

I picked a few members who I strongly suspected had never been staff. I searched the staff-only forum for any posts made by those users, and the result was no posts. Yet their post-count totals did change. So either forum search isn't searching everything in a forum, which is a possibility, or there's some other explanation for the disparity.

In the process of picking members to check, I did discover a fair number of dormant members who I didn't realize were staff at some point in the past. I learned this by doing the search in the staff-only forum, and finding posts made by them. Reading the posts, it was easy to see that they were writing from the context of a staff member. Their posts weren't just posts or threads that had been moved into the staff forum from somewhere else.

Info About All Graphs

The horizontal X axes represent dates, and are labeled as YYYY-MM-DD.

The vertical Y axes are automatically determined, and are specific to each graph. The upper and lower limits of a graph are based on the range of values in the graphed data. This means that the steepness of line slopes can't be compared between different graphs.

Colors are also automatically assigned, from a rotating pool of 12 colors. This can make color-to-name conversion ambiguous when more than 12 members are graphed. Use each graph's legend or key on the right to resolve any duplicate colors. The legend is arranged in the same order as the right-most points of each graph.

A dashed line is automatically assigned to inactive users (no posts in the latest measurement period), and a solid line to active users (at least 1 post in latest period). To reduce the clutter, the only inactive user typically shown is @mad jew.

Graphs of Top 50 Post-Counts Over Time

These two graphs show the progression of semi-annual post counts for the Top 50 posters, starting from 2016 July 3rd (2016-07-03). Users who made no posts in the last 6 months are omitted, except for the historical benchmark represented by @mad jew.

Due to the November Anomaly, mad jew gained posts this time, as did many others who were actually dormant. This makes these graphs denser than usual this time.

Members @Rogifan and @The Game 161 appear in both graphs, with different colors and very different line slopes, showing that slopes between graphs aren't comparable.

Top 50 Posters: In Two Groups

A horizontal graph line (or nearly so) is a member with a low post rate.

A steeply rising slope indicates a high post rate. If the slopes of the segments steepens over time, that user is increasing their post rate. If the slopes flatten, the post rate is falling off.

Since @mad jew gained a few posts, he appears with a solid line rather than a dashed line.

Ugly Graphs

The first graph below shows all the members from the two graphs above in a single graph. It's cluttered and difficult to read.

The second graph, which adds the remaining inactive members in the Top 50, is even more cluttered.

The main reason for showing these is to compare slopes (post-count growth rates). This gives an idea of how much the most prolific posters actually post.

Graphs of Weekly Post-Count Growth

The following graphs show weekly post-count growth for the most prolific 36 users, divided into 3 groups of 12 each. There is no overlap between groups.

Each line represents one user's weekly post-count growth, relative to their post count at the start of the measurement period 6 months ago. In effect, each member gets their own "starting count", and the graph shows how the post count grows from week to week.

If a member makes a lot of posts for a week, then their line will slope up more steeply. If they make no posts for a week, then their line will be flat. In rare cases, a line may drop a little, which means that some posts were deleted, or a thread was moved to an uncounted forum.

Since the members of each group have different ranges, you can't compare slopes between graphs. A steep line in one graph might not represent the same post rate in another graph. To get a sense of overall weekly growth, we need a single graph with all the Prolific Posters, which is shown after the groups of 12.

Weekly Post Growth

Notice the Y axis numbers in Group 1 vs. Group 2. Due to the prodigious post rates of the top few members, Group 1's top Y is several times larger than it is in Group 2.

The shape of most lines in Group 1 is roughly similar, despite some bends up or down. The most notable exceptions are the lines for @maflynn and @Doctor Q, with large single-week jumps at the November Anomaly. There's another jump visible in September for @AustinIllini and @EugW. This isn't due to a post-counting anomaly, it's an actual jump in post rates due to iPhone release.

In Group 2 we see more Anomalous jumps, for @SandboxGeneral and @annk. We also see another iPhone-release jump, for @newellj.

One of the more striking lines in Group 3 is for @deeddawg, who starts nearly flat (low rate), leaps upward for the iPhone release, then tapers back to complete flatness (no posts) since mid-November.

In this graph we can compare slopes, which gives a better sense of how prolific @Scepticalscribe is compared to everyone else.

The Anomalous jumps are plain, as are the iPhone-release leaps.

This graph is similar to the one directly above, but it omits the Top 5 most prolific posters. Because the vertical max depends on the range of values graphed, it shows more detail in the lower range. Compare the graph Y range above, which has a Y-max of 5561, to the lower graph with its Y-max of 1526.

Hmmm... I made the 10 top this past 6 months with 1415 posts during that time period. That averages out to 7.7 posts per day. I guess I need to spend less time here.

BTW, there are several posters here that I don't recall seeing before, but which also have way more posts than me in those six months. I guess we hang out in different areas.

Fun With Graphs

Welcome to the January 2020 version of "Fun With Graphs". We'll see some graphs of things other than the usual semi-annual and weekly posts.

In some of the graphs above, we saw major jumps due to the September iPhone release and the November Anomaly. Those two events will recur in many of the following graphs.

Top 50 Changes: Details

In the Table 1, we saw that @Scepticalscribe moved past @GGJstudios and @C DM. The graph shows us when she moved past @GGJstudios, but not @C DM. This is because the the last date of a weekly capture was 2019-12-29, and her count on that date hadn't yet surpassed @C DM. From this, we can conclude that she passed @C DM between Dec 29 and Jan 3, the dates when the measurements were made.

We next expand the view into the Top 10 by adding @maflynn at the top, and a few somewhat lackluster posters on the low end. Notable here is that @Doctor Q's jump of over 1000 posts is just a medium-size upwards blip. This is because the range of counts being graphed is between 35 and 65 thousand, so the increase of a mere thousand posts is notable mainly for its abruptness.

In the first post of this thread, I mentioned a horse-race in the range around rank 25. This graph is a week-by-week picture of that contest.

In the upper entries we see @eyoungren with a steady rate, and @Rogifan almost as steady, except for a blip around iPhone release. @I7guy shows a decelerating rate, yet still closes the gap with Rogifan. We also see that the upward slopes are now quite similar, so what started with a larger gap between users looks like it might keep the relative ranks for a while.

In the lower 3 entries, @The Game 161 is a bit bumpy but a solid poster, with a rate increase after the September iPhone release. We also see that @MacDawg moved up a rank due to the November Anomaly. Although @Jaffa Cake also gained an Anomalous post, it was only one, so not enough to hold position.

Race Into the Top 10

@Apple fanboy surpassed @mad jew in September, at about the same time as @Relentless Power surpassed @mkrishnan to move into the Top 10.

As of September, Relentless Power is at position 10, and becomes the member who @Weaselboy must surpass to enter the Top 10. Since the latter's slope (post rate) is less than the former's, that seems unlikely unless something else happens.

If nothing else changes, the most likely scenario is that Relentless Power moves past mad jew, to take rank position 9, leaving mad jew in position 10. That would mean Weaselboy would need to surpass mad jew to enter the Top 10. That's currently projected for May of 2021, in Table 5 posted above. Assuming mad jew doesn't gain any more anomalous posts.

Likes

When post-count data is collected for MR users, their Likes counts have also been collected, when possible. The graph below shows the growth in weekly Likes counts for the top-Liked users I collect data on.

You'll see a few users here who don't appear in other graphs, like @samcraig and @keysofanxiety. There can be different reasons for this, such as posting mainly in an uncounted forum (where Likes nonetheless count), or by making posts that often get multiple Likes.

More Fun

The 2 graphs below show my own weekly post and Likes counts, along with a few other members whose posts I enjoy reading in the Community forum: @AngerDanger, @Gutwrench, and @LizKat.

The graphs have different ordering and colors, because Likes can easily exceed post count, as demonstrated by LizKat's results. Any post can have multiple Likes, even posts that are in uncounted forums.

The above graphs showing weekly post growth are cumulative. That is, each line represents the cumulative growth of a user's post count relative to their post count at the start of the overall interval.

In these graphs, we look at the number of posts per week. This will make any changes from week to week more obvious. For example, if someone makes exactly 20 posts every week, then their line in this graph would be flat at a level of 20. In the post growth cumulative graph, their line would rise at a constant upward slope of 20 units per week. If they then drop to 18 posts per week, their posts-per-week line would drop by 2 units, a step that would easily be visible here, while their growth line would show only a slight flattening.

This is a typical graph of prolific posters.

@Scepticalscribe and @Apple fanboy show a marked increase for the week of the November Anomaly, but I can't tell if it's due to the Anomaly or not, because they're both prolific posters. It's definitely more than usual, but it's not that unusual.

Much more unusual is the spike for the week of iPhone release. Both @EugW and @AustinIllini exceeded Scepticalscribe in their post counts for that week.

In this graph I've swapped some prolific posters for staff members who gained a lot of posts in the Anomaly. Even Scepticalscribe's 367 weekly posts are dwarfed by the staff-forum recount results.

@chown33: You'll note that the shape of the spike in the graphs for, respectively, @Apple fanboy and I, during the "November Anomaly" are pretty much identical, which suggests to me that this spike was caused by that particular anomaly, rather than our more usual pretty prolific posting habits.

@Relentless Power moved into the Top 10, pushing out mkrishnan.

@Scepticalscribe moved up 2 positions, slipping past @C DM only in the last week or so. She continues to have the highest post rate of all tracked users, and the only member to post at an average rate faster than once per hour.

@Doctor Q gained over 1000 posts! Many dormant members also gained posts! What's going on here?! Has @mad jew returned?!! The explanation for this is below, in the post "A November Anomaly"!

There's a bit of a horse-race in the range around rank 25. @I7guy and @The Game 161 rapidly advanced into positions 26 and 27. Meanwhile, @eyoungren and @Rogifan at 24 and 25 haven't been idle, with over 500 posts each.

Please welcome @Fishrrman to the Top 50 at rank 44, and @Huntn at 46.

We say au revoir to @jav6454 and @-aggie-, who fell out of the Top 50.

Given I’d bought a renovation project I was expecting to take a drop in my post rates this time around.
