ATI Releases X1900 for PCI-e G5s

ATI (now owned by AMD) has announced the X1900 G5 Mac Edition for PCI-e equipped Macs (i.e. Dual-core G5's). The card contains a X1900 GT processing core and has 256 MB of VRAM with two dual-link DVI ports for support of two 30" Apple Cinema Displays. The card also contains S-Video output for connecting TVs sporting the connector.

At the time of this writing, availability and pricing information were not available.

More frames in gaming little else from what I can tell. Its a little late to the party with DX10 right around the corner though this is still a good thing. I wonder what the Mac version of this card will cost?

Pffff.... I'll wait and get a Quadro when I finally crumble and get a MacPro. Its not far off, I have a MacPro set up saved at the Apple Store. I just need to be strong!

I don't believe the X1900 is even an option for you. I believe the older G5 owners are truly going to be neglected.

None, because you can't use the X1900. If you have an X800, that means you have a dual-processor G5 with AGP. The X1900 is for dual-core G5s with PCIe. Like the article said.

I had a MacPro setup in my saved basket.. the next day I had an email from an Apple Sales Exc. saying he could get me a better price on it. He did, I bought it!

wow, awesome. There's life left in the G5.

on another note, anyone else find it interesting that they used Civ IV as the example of a game you can play with this card? It's surprisingly demanding for a turn-based strategy game. I've found that it can bring a 17" core duo iMac to its knees with a large map, 1440x900, and settings on high.

I was only enquiring the difference. If i was serious about getting one I would obviously research whether it would work. However I will admit i missed the 'core' bit in the OP. I just saw Dual G5

...but it took far too long. Hopefully the delay was due to the Intel transition, and the next retail releases will come in a more timely manner.

Here is what probably happened.

ATI had shown a prototype X1800XT Mac Edition in AGP at MWSF in January...

Then the Intel transition happened...

...and then the merger with AMD...

...and the X1800 was obsoleted by the X1900...

...and they finally got around to releasing a new retail card today.

I'm confused... they released a Mac Edition of the X1900 for the G5 before there is one for the Intel MacPros? Is there a retail X1900 for the Intel MacPros?
