I'm confused... they released a Mac Edition of the X1900 for the G5 before there is one for the Intel MacPros? Is there a retail X1900 for the Intel MacPros?

No and sort of...

The X1900XT for the Mac Pro is available from the Apple store as an a la carte upgrade, but is not a retail ATI card. The X1900 G5 Mac Edition is a retail card available through ATI and (probably soon) distrubutors like Newegg.

There's a X1900 XT available as an option on the Mac Pro... Are you just complaining that you don't have a choice for 256 Mb less VRAM?

Some people stress about anything. I have a 7800GT in my Quad and it works just fine. And, I really could care less about upgrading to Intel - the PPC's also work just fine.

That's great that you have the 7800GT...the problem is that other people that don't have one can't get one without lots of frustration and expense. Apple sold the 7800GT or Quadro as strictly BTO components - the only other way to get one was to order the card as a replacement part for $$$. This new card solves that availability problem, and is more powerful than the 7800GT to boot.

It will never be possible to add Intel CPUs to G5 Macs - square peg/round hole.

yes the X1900 with 512MB is available as an option on the MacPro for an extra $250.

More frames in gaming little else from what I can tell. Its a little late to the party with DX10 right around the corner though this is still a good thing. I wonder what the Mac version of this card will cost?

But DX10 isn't relevant on a PPC system. Whether Apple will offer anything that will use whatever features DX10 compatibility will bring remains to be seen.

This ATI thing is an upgrade that only affects those that bought a G5 with the dual core chips (a.k.a. November 2005 revision), which was available for only nine months. I guess those with the AGP units are screwed for an upgrade path. That said, my G5 is now an HTPC, my only reason to upgrade it is to get a video card without the screwy ADC port, which isn't much of a reason, just that ADC is a bit of an irritation for me.

By Jobs!
It's as if he's completely immune to hype.
God help him... God help us all...

That's quite true. The Mac Pro is not significantly faster for many things and it's not as if the old ones have become completely useless. It was and is still a far more than capable system.

If ATI is wanting to continue a good relationship with apple, post AMD takeover.

this move is a great step in the right direction.

perhaps they can offer more cards for more models. this would not only help the secondary market for graphics cards on macs, but they can make some money.

more importantly, ATI would make themselves more important to Apple, thus continued use at more new apple products.

Maybe an AMD ugrade for the G5 processor to go with this card?

AMD would really get Apple's attention if they would offer an x86 upgrade for G5 now. Anyone know if it's physically possible?
Hey, I can dream, can't I?

I just installed the x1900 on my Mac Pro, on my stocked video card it was very cutty (is that a word?) where i would get very low fps when i played the Midevil Total war demo. After i installed it and got around tha fact that it does not work on an apple 23" display i found out it was much much faster and not so cutty. I would get 40-60 fps when i am standing and 20fps in world of warcraft with low setting with the old card now i get 50-60 fps on full settings. This card is amazing, grats to the guys with old G5s.

$349 is a ripoff for a card that does not have 512 VRAM. I just looked at ati.com and there are two new mobility chipsets.. x1700 and x1800.. So why didnt the x1600 get upgraded in the refreshed MBP. Its really crippled at 128 MB VRAM and underclocked GPU for a $2000 laptop. *shakes head in shame* This kind of crap is why companies like Alienware or Dell gain marketshare.

I guess that puts the rumour that ATI would drop Mac support because its owned by AMD.

Good news! ( I prefer ATi cards to nVid)
Maybe AMD is trying to kiss up to Apple so they'll support AMD chips with future OS X releases.

No, I was just wondering if there is an option for an upgrade (post delivery from Apple) for the MacPros. I'd like to upgrade my video card one day when the prices drop. I would expect to see a retail version of this card for the MacPros before a G5 edition. (out with the old, in with the new and whatnot)
