I have a unifi dream machine. I am starting to become more privacy focused. Moving away from the cloud etc. It got me thinking even about my mobile internet connection. I’m not doing anything to be weary about. Just really like the challenge.
I have a 1gig symmetrical internet connection at my house. Anyone VPN home whenever they are out? Even over cellular?

I have an OpenVPN server running on my home router via the DD-WRT firmware and I have used it with cellular. The OpenVPN iOS app doesn't care if you're on wifi or cellular. Configuration was a learning experience but once it was done it has worked great.

I run an OpenVPN server on my router from time-to-time. My reason: running an OpenVPN server makes any device on the VPN appear to be on my home LAN even if I'm physicallly far from home. This allows my "in-home only" streaming video from Comcast to work anywhere.

Shhhh! It's a secret!

I also have symmetrical fiber and do I this with OpenVPN, which is built into my Asus router.

If I am in an area with bad cellular and I have to use WiFi, I will VPN into my home. I also have an older Asus router that has built in OpenVPN and I imported the configuration into it (I call it my travel router). When I travel for vacation, I take it with me and plug it in, it will make an automatic connection to home, and it has the same SSID as home, so our devices automatically connect and the traffic passes through it with ease. I have even taken a Roku with us on vacation, it sees my travel router, makes the connection, and streaming across the VPN works good too.

I am interested in this approach but have always been leery of replacing the native firmware of a router. Can others doing this expand on the experience?

You don't need special firmware. Some routers support openvpn right out of the box. My AC4000 from TP Link generates a key you copy to your other devices and it allows them access via the openvpn app.

I have seen this as well, unfortunately I bought a Netgear router that is not compatible with either the OpenVPN or DD-WRT.

I use gl-inet device behind my dream machine so either a travel router or my mobile device can connect in. The VPN router option I also get my local tv channels streamed as well.
