I think the 500 post rule has served MR well over the years, and therefore is not likely to be changed. With involvement and contribution to the discussions, 500 posts doesn't really take that long. It is a good measuring stick of involvement and continuity. Sure, some will spam along the way, but the Mods do a good job of monitoring the situation. The race goes to the turtle, not the rabbit.

I have never understood the fascination of having an avatar. Sure, its easier to recognize members, but I recognize names of relevant posters as well.

It is a nice addition, but I'd be just as happy here if nobody had one.

I was thinking that it takes 500 posts to get an avatar that you can upload and use, what if at 250 posts you get to choose from a few pre-selected avatars to use.

Just an idea…
Nice try since you have 9 more to #250 ;)

I think the 500 posts rule is a good one to go by. It keeps people contributing and and also ensures that they are a long term member that is actively partaking in the site. Plus, I agree with an earlier post about being able to recognize people by their avatar.

I just recently got my avatar and I was ecstatic when it happened!

It's so funny to look back when I first started posting in 03', how I didn't even own a mac when I joined the MR community. Ha.

Nah, I don't think so. Generic avatars defeat the purpose of having an avatar in many respects, as it is a method to show off one's individuality. It would be hard to differentiate between members as well if multiple people had the same 'tar!

I say leave it at 500. 500 is a nice number.

I don't like the one year idea either

if you do a search there are thousands of users on the forum that have been here for a year and have posted only once or twice. They always join at around Max Expo's, post a few times but only a handful stick around.

i Vote the 500 post rule stays the same. No 250, no 1 year

We've been over the whole "why 500 posts before avatar?" thing, many, many, many times. Why is it this way? Because thems is the rules!

It's always* been this way, and for the foreseeable future, it'll be staying that way.

* it has as long as I remember anyway.

Freudian slip there, edesignuk? Foreseeable, or forceable? Just what type of system are we running here at MacRumors?

Sometimes tough love is the best remedy ... how about for the "force-seeable" future? Always seeking a happy medium ...

As someone who just hit 400 posts after a year and a half, I'm fine with the current rules...at this point I've put in this much effort, I don't really want a short cut...it'll come eventually... ;)

Damn Communists...

Let's face it folks - to many on MR the avatar is a precious commodity, a Junior G-Man (or G-Woman) badge of acceptance. The establishment of a visual online identity. You are a certified Mac geek and oracle of knowledge with the little thumbnail sized picture you stole from another forum or website. Or Southpark/Family Guy, if the latest trends are any guide. ;)

Personally I felt nothing when I passed the magic 500 post threshold....If I have a billion posts here all that it means to me is that I've spent that many hours of my life sitting on my butt shooting my mouth off to people I've never seen. Like right now. :)

But seriously, with just few post a day - a comment on a news item, a question about hardware or software, or even something silly like "Man cuts off balls after rugby game" (it really happened, and there was a thread about it) - you'll soon be a 6502, cradled in gentle and soothing arms of the MR community as a member of the family. Just don't make a "Free iPod" thread.

I didn't start this thread to ask to "lower the 500 post for avatar to 250", I started it to ask that at 250 posts if we can get something like a name change or a pre selected avatar that we have a few to choose from. I agree with everyone that 500 is a good number to keep it at...

First you want a set of generic avatars that anyone could choose from, resulting in no way to differentiate between certain members who choose the same one, and on top of that, now you would like to change your name as well so no one would even know who you are anymore?!? Not much for individuality, are ya? :p ;)

Well, I suppose you could always paste a postage stamp underneath your name in your post on your screen. Ahem, it might be tricky to work out scrolling, but where there's a will, there's a way. :D

And Shard, admit it, deep down inside, you crave anonymity just like the rest of us! :p :D

The name thing was for instead of "regular"...at 250 you would get something different..

Haha - thanks for the laugh, good one...

Maybe everybody should get an avatar. The difference would be that the "powers that be" assign the avatars to the new posters or "newbe's". When you have enough posts, you get your own personal one.

Just a thought.

Bet that could make some folks get REALLY creative! :D

And why would we possibly want to spend time doing that? We have enough problems now just keeping things running smoothly - the last thing we need is tons of extra work that really serves no good purpose.

Its 500 - its always been 500 - and it will all ways be 500 until we tell you otherwise - so it probably would be best to not ask why.

Because you're thoughtful, caring, kind and extremely considerate gods/goddesses that would go the extra mile (or two) just to please us mere mortals and underlings and that would send us into eternal bliss and happiness because you don't have to, want to, but YOU DID!

are you taunting me? cause that won't work - as a matter of fact, it will only get you noticed and you don't want to be on the Mod's radar screen..... ;)

Lighten' up, man. Did you see the smileys? I'm not trying to get on the radar or your nerves. Your reaction is beginning to frighten me!

I'm sorry you took it that way.
