I've had the Kanex XD for almost a year and have generally been happy with it. My only major complaint is that once in a while the audio will lag. All you have to do to fix it is hit Cmd+F2 twice, but it's a bit distracting all the same.

So jealous... stupid thunderbolt holding me back...
ME TOO!

Ugh, this is absolutely terrible. I was SO looking forward to using this beautiful 27" display on this 2011 iMac as an external monitor for my Xbox or whatever else I may want to hook up to it while I'm living in my college dorm...

But now I'm finding that I can't do any of that because thunderbolt is SO restrictive and can be used with SO few devices.

Yep it's very infuriating, isn't it? It's one of many reasons I haven't updated to a 2011 iMac yet. I'm not giving up being able to plug stuff into my computer!

Are there ANY thunderbolt devices available right now? I've seen some really expensive high-end external hard-drives, and of course other Apple devices, but it's looking more and more like these two thunderbolt ports are just going to collect a bunch of dust! :(

Honestly, Thunderbolt IS useless right now to 99.9% of people. I've seen not a single device out there that's reasonably priced/available. And take that from someone who has several Thunderbolt-equipped laptops. It is annoying, to be sure...

I have a 2010 imac 21.5" and have decided to upgrade to a 27" version. Now should I get the 2011 version or just the 2010?

I understand that the main thing of the 2011 is thunderbolt, but realistically that option is not really affordable yet. Also I could play my Xbox 360 on the same iMac 2010 version.

Anyone know any quick speed comparisons in the 2010 27"iMac vs the 2011 version?

Thanks

The new imacs are more than twice as fast as the previous models (going off the benchmark scores). The graphics are much faster, as well as the processors. I upgraded from a 2010 i3 3.2 to the 2011 i7 3.4, and the results are amazing.

Looking @ the i7 2.93 2010 @$1499 vs the i7 3.4 2011 @$2199 is a more appropriate comparison. I personally couldn't justify the $700 price difference and TB was a negative since I had a mini-displayport Windows machine I wanted to connect to the iMac. This 2010 is plenty fast for most everything I've thrown at it.

Cheers,

Right, it's definitely not fair to compare an i3 to an i7. I have a 2009 i7 iMac quad-core, and it absolutely flies with an SSD and (overkill) 16GB RAM, and I enjoy gaming on it tremendously with 360/PS3. In absolutely no way is it worth upgrading to a Thunderbolt-equipped iMac at this time if you have any interest in connecting other devices.

As others have stated you simply cannot compare an i3 to an i7. For better comparisons you would have to compare the same comparable models.

On top of that you did not even answer my questions as your computer you were upgrading from is not even relevant....

We are talking about 27" i7 2.93ghz model vs the base model or any model within the 27" new 2011 versions.

Looks like the 2010 version @ $1499 is the best move right now.

No question, picking up a 2010 i7 model at $1499 makes the absolute most sense. I see absolutely no reason to pick up a 2011 at this time.

There is light in the darkness!!

Blackmagic will release it's Blackmagic Intensity Extreme soon.
It's an HDMI capture card which uses Thunderbolt. That means the HDMI-signal is send into OSX (or Windows) and you need to use a video editing program like Final Cut or Adobe Premiere to accept it. You can watch it fullscreen et voila!

Not a perfect solution but as long as your not recording the signal there shouldn't be much (or any?) lag. You also bypass the EDID (and the 720p limitation) with this device :).

I really hope someone could obtain one and check how it goes?

Great news. What's the price on that thing?

299 dollars or 209 euros and is coming Q4 2011 (soon). Unfortunately twice the amount you pay for a Kanex XD but this thing does more than an Kanex XD since it's a recording device. For being an HDMI recording device it's actually cheap, but it's not cheap if we are going to use it just for watching an HDMI-signal on our iMacs. Blackmagic is an expensive brand and Thunderbolt itself isn't cheap either to implement into devices.

So... you could buy a new monitor for that price, but if you really want to use the 2011 iMac and are as desperate as me  this is the only option for now.

I think I can put up with the 2g 6970 for now since my Mac is still fun and "new" to me. BF3 is the most demanding game I'm interested in playing and it runs passably for now. I'll probably build a new PC after Ivy Bridge / new nVidia cards are released, so as long as I have an adapter by then I'll be ok. I was just worried that there wouldn't be any adapters at all, either due to technological issues or restraints from Apple. I'm just happy to know that it's possible. I can wait it out until a simple signal converter is released.

After reading your information provided, I was so excited that I emailed Blackmagic for their suggestion for using this product to make use of iMac 2011 with thunderbolt as a displaying monitor for HMDI devices. Unfortunately, I got their reply saying that the product is not supposed to be successfully do what we have been talking about in this thread. I cannot ensure the replying guy is 100% ensure about their product (seems not making sense); however, we should take care about this and make sure before buying.
Just remind guys planning to get one.

Whoa... seriously? You can bypass the 720p limitation? How?

What do you mean? He said we can't use this to play PS3 games, watch Blu-rays running on our PS3, etc.? Why not?

Nevermind, I just got confirmation. Don't buy the Blackmagic Design Intensity unless you want to access your PS3 or your 360 in a little preview window in Adobe... it's a device designed to record footage, not so much display footage. It doesn't have all the features of an actual video player, then.

so I just got my belfan hdmi converter, works! just don't stand so close looks a bit pixilated. Also set your ps3 options to 720 otherwise it won't work

27 iMac as display with VGA input

Well, having reviewed the many many pages in this thread (and others out there) I have gone ahead and ordered a VGA male to DVI male cable and the Atlona DVI to Mini DisplayPort converter. So fingers crossed that I can use the 27" iMac as an extended desktop from my work laptop and finally dump this old PC and VGA screen (once I've finished copying over all my Outlook email to Apple Mail of course).

I should receive them in about a week, then I'll check back in and let you all know how it went. Fingers crossed it will be a nice Christmas present for myself. :)

What iMac are you planning to use this on?
