More than a month ago, LG's 24-inch 4K UltraFine display was removed from Apple's online store across Europe. Now, the higher-end 5K, 27-inch UltraFine display has also been removed from Apple's online store in several European countries, such as France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK.

Interestingly, both the 4K and 5K UltraFine displays remain listed and available for order in the United States. The 5K UltraFine display retails for $1,300 and offers one Thunderbolt 3 port and three USB-C ports. The display features up to 500 nits of brightness with a 5,120 x 2,880 resolution and P3 wide color gamut, and offers built-in stereo speakers, a camera, and a microphone.

Apple is reportedly working on a new lower-priced external monitor, according to Bloomberg. The new monitor would be offered alongside the current high-end $4,999, 32-inch Pro Display XDR. According to Bloomberg, the new monitor would be cheaper and aimed at mainstream consumers, rather than the professional market that the Pro Display XDR is aimed at.

(Thanks, Colin!)

Update: According to MacGeneration, a soon-to-be-implemented regulation across the European Union and the UK is the cause of the display's disappearance from Apple's online store in those regions.

Aaaaaand there continues to be absolutely no viable option to have an external macOS display with Retina. Which, since non-Retina text rendering has gotten considerably worse since High Sierra, is quite a problem.

Seems like using a Mac (other the iMac) in an office environment is no longer a setting Apple wants to support.

This is completely ridiculous, if you use a Mac, there isn't a single retina-quality monitor (4K at 24" or less or 5K at 27" or less) available to buy in Europe, apart from Apple's 6K XDR Display, which very few can afford. Why can't we have the iMac panels as standalone displays, and/or the return of target display mode?

Assumption about Apple removing those displays from the Store might actually be wrong. I think they removed it, because LG has now started selling them on their own website.

Until now they were not available on the lg.com website in Germany (you couldn't actually buy any monitors on their website just a half a year ago), whereas now I can order both the Ultrafine 4k and 5k just right there (see screenshot) with same price that Apple sold them on.

I assume there are was a fixed term contract on exclusive sale through Apple distribution channels which has now ended.

Same here... I guess the percentage of customers is low like us :) Everyone likes big monitors and not care the high resolution. and using the high resolution with external displays a bit technical challenging on windows computers. It is suck. I don't understand how they use 27" with 4k. It like a magnifying glass.

I've never understood the hatred of the UltraFine. I know they're not Apple branded, but given the alternatives on the market I've always been very happy. In terms of features, I couldn't find a decent alternative when I was buying… I essentially wanted a 27" iMac screen for my other computers - and that's exactly what it is!

Good. They're garbage. The backlight is as even as a minefield. The viewing angle is so narrow that there is no angle from which you can see the entire screen with the same shade of colors. The bottom will be grey and the top will be black, but if you tilt the screen then the top will become grey and the bottom will be black. No in between. Your two eyes will see different shades of color due to the slight difference in their position and therefore your brain will start telling you that you are having a stroke. The simplest grey gradient will have shades of pink, green and every color of the rainbow. If you tilt your head differently they will become different colors. Also, it will have a ton of banding, way more than on your laptop's (supposedly worse?) display. It's advertised as 10 bit but it has worse banding than your 8 bit display in your MacBook. Seriously, if you're used to your "pretty good" MacBook Pro screen then this is 10 steps back from that. It is absolutely not suitable for any kind of image or video work. It's fine for browsing the web but these are supposed to be high end consumer displays, not low end garbage for the average computer user.

The panel of course is fine. A lot of people are turned off because of the aesthetics and the price. Hard to understand why a 27" monitor is only a few hundred dollars cheaper than a whole 27" iMac.

It's not that it's a bad display; it's that for an average display, it's way too pricey.

You can get a 27-inch 2560x1440 display for $250. Retina perhaps justifies the price being about twice as much. It does not justify the price being five times as much.

LG can either make this a more premium display (such as by fixing the wobbliness in the stand); even then, it's really quite pricey. Or they can lower the price.

There isn’t another 5k 27” monitor with built in Thunderbolt hub. That’s why it’s so expensive.

That is simply not true for the current model. Yes, the first generation was problematic. But I'm just sitting in front of one bought in June last year and the display quality is perfect and very useable for image work! The panel is just as good or bad as the one from iMac.

I was thinking the same thing as you. But then I checked the UK LG site for the 5k monitor, and it says 'discontinued'.

I have had 2 of the 4K ultrafines for 4 years now and they are stunning monitors and I still can't find anything for a reasonable price that really beats them. Only issues I have had is with image retention on one of the displays.

I couldn't go back to a standard definition monitor after these and almost everything seems to be geared towards gaming and ultrawides these days. A new apple monitor would be very welcome.
