This issue has really been bothering me too. It seems to have gotten worse with 10.6.5. Now I can barely go a couple hours without the sound failing on the ACD. I am actually considering returning the display to apple. Do you think they would give me a refund after about a month since purchase?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; de-de; Desire_A8181 Build/FRF91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

10.5.6 definitely made the problem worse.
Didn't have the sound issue before, but after the upgrade I had to reset the SMC the first time.

So I installed the OSX update last Tuesday to 10.6.5 and the sound issue has just happened again for the first time since the update (late 2009 MBP). I know the update made no mention of fixing this but I was optimistic.

The only way I can get the speakers to play sound is to physically unplug the monitor.

I'm going to give Apple another call while the problem is happening this time.

Edit: Tried calling Applecare but the only support available on a Sunday is for iPhone or existing repairs.

...edited... You can unplug the monitor power for 10 seconds and it will reset and work until the next time it sleeps. ...edited...

anyone try plugging into a power strip with a switch and flipping switch on/off to see if that's the equiv. of unplugging? Just curious, as I want one of these so badly, but am holding off cos of the sound problems. If the power strip switch thing works, the maybe I can live with it... I think it's good to totally cut power at night to eliminate the vampire power suck anyway?

Yes, flipping the switch on/off does work. I unplug mine when not in use too.

I have been speaking with a Senior AppleCare Representative lately who has looked into this problem and been in contact with the Engineering team. Today he called me as he had received news from the Engineering team that we should keep an eye out for a Software update as they are aware of the sound problem and working on something. There is no timescale for the fix but I just wanted to know that it could be easily fixed and will be shortly. :D

thanks, that's awesome news to hear! :) yay for apple.

Firmware Update is available

The firmware update to fix the audio issue is now available through Software Update, I have applied it and will wait to see if it resolves the issue.

Just got a new ACD 27" and after using it for 1 day (on a custom built Windows 7 PC)... the sound got cut off. I disconnected the USB first, reconnected it, and nothing happened, still no audio.

Then I disconnected the mini-display port plug and USB and reconnected the USB first, then the MDP, and got my sound back.
