clean install possible then

Yup, the $169 version includes iLife 09 and iWork 09 which Tiger users are currently unable to install, hence they are offered the all in one pack instead of buying everything separate for more $$. That is the reason for the two prices, not the actual OS discs. The Snow Leopard install media is the same in both and does allow full installs.

well
guess i'll get it off amazon, zero out my hd and then install SL

I'll be upgrading from Tiger. So the consensus seems to be that I could use the $29 install disc to hop straight to Snow Leopard. But the downside to that is that I wouldn't have iLife '09.

But then I could buy iLife '09 for $53 on Amazon.

That's $82 for everything the Box Set provides. Right? I feel like I'm missing something here.

Signal-11,

What company do you know that sells an "upgrade" to a software package requiring no activation keys, that is actually the full blown software, and does no checks to verify the person actually owns the software? Can you give me one example?

S-

well..we did pay huge premiums on hardware to own a mac that went straight to apple's pockets, so it's a bit different. Rather, they should want us all to have Snow Leopard so that they don't have to support Tiger/Leopard anymore and to simplify development.

hm, anyone care to post the steps to get this thing to do a clean install with a format?

By the way... most people consider a clean install the same thing as format and install.

I've read that Snow Leopard actually does an Archive-and-Install automatically... it's the only option you have (other than erase with disk utility, then installing).

Ah-ha! I figured out what I was missing: iWork '09. That about evens things out.

i saw that, but it didn't make much sense to me.

do i run the disk utility within leopard (i just switched to osx from windows) or is there a different way to initiate it?

Pop in the DVD, restart the computer. It'll boot to install menu, select your language. You'll be at the installer and you'll see the menu bar on the top. Hit utilities -> disk utility -> Select the drive on the left side -> hit the erase tab -> select erase -> confirm erase -> erase. If you hit the security options you can zero out the drive first and then it'll format.

Once that's done close Disk Utility then run installer.

iLife 08 questions

I am on Tiger and want to upgrade to SL. I don't need to upgrade to iLife 09 or iWork 09.

I want to do a clean install, my question is regarding iLife 08.

If I use the $29 upgrade disc, and do the clean install how do I get iLife 08 back?
I assume I was given a disc with iLife 08 when I bought my iMac a few years ago?

Insert the disc, go to Utilities -> Disc Utility -> Format and erase the drive ->Close disc utility -> Run installer.
Instead of doing that, can you just pop in the SL disc then restart the computer and hold "c" then follow the steps?

edit: What is the point of running disc utility before continuing with the Installer? Doesn't it automatically format and install SL?

Yes.

The steps I listed are for a CLEAN install. What the SL installer does by default is archive and install which saves your settings and files.

Gotcha. Thanks.

And do you happen to know how to save the network settings without using a Time Machine? Manually perhaps?

10.4 Tiger users have to do for 10.6?

I am hoping as soon as someone gets the 30 dollar upgrade disc finds out if it's got the whole OS on it; and can tell me if it needs to verify previous 10.5 to work. A lot of people are saying the upgrade disc and the one in the boxset are identical, I would sure love to save some money if that is true.

I know get the boxset is what some of you are going to say, well I'm struggling college student and shelling out 169 right now ain't going to happen. I may have to just torrent 10.5 and then buy the 30 dollar upgrade.
