Oddly enough, mommy birds chew food for the kids, and they often feed them at McDonald's too!

Close, but no cigar.

As I attempted to allude to earlier, Momma birds chew, swallow, then regurgitate food for their chicks.

Something tells me that the Mom is this case might have a hard time with the last part.

I'm not referring to Cushing's Disease per se. I'm referring to pituitary adenomas which can have an effect on hormone secretion. This occurs in cases separate from Cushing's.

Growth hormone or thyrotropin deficiency? Anything specific you're thinking of?

Imagine what a winner this guy had to be!! ;)

I'm fairly surprised someone was willing to have sex with her.

That aside, someone needs to drill into this woman's head why junk food is called such. Perhaps in the form of a cheese book to make it easier. And you're right, those kids are most likely already screwed.

To chime in on the "can someone become morbidly obese as a result of a medical condition?" thing my boyfriend is *thinks hard, tries to get this right* growth hormone and thyroxin deficient, cortisol insufficient (doctors think this might now be deficient though) and apparently his testosterone's gone as well, but that's still being tested to see the extent.

(He also has a whole LOAD of other little things wrong with him, but those are the main ones. He can't even remember all the other ones - although one of the things that's wrong with him causes forgetfulness so . . .)

He's been told all his life that as a result of the growth hormone and thyroxin (although I think it's mainly the thyroxin) he'll end up obese, and it'll only get worse with age - the thyroxin tablets he takes daily don't improve his metabolism at all. He's 20 and is I think on the edge of the overweight/obese BMI. He cannot lose weight easily at all. So, based on what he's told me I'm pretty sure it's possible to end up morbidly obese as a result of a medical condition, however I'd be interested to know what the condition is that then allows you to lose 11 stone through seeing a dietician . . .

Everyone was effusive in their praise.

However, here is a woman — who I'll bet none of us know personally — and even with the reported fact that she has lost well over an adult's body weight she is still judged by her past

I'm judging her on the fact that she's feeding her kids junk. I work in a kid's clothes store and there's nothing that makes me angrier than the sort of parents (generally overweight themselves) who come in with an 8 year old, can't find a dress in our largest size (12-13) to fit her and then ask me if there's a adult branch of our store in the shopping centre. Those little girls never look like they enjoy shopping :(

that is f'n ridiculous. i hope the healthcare system is 'too busy' to pay for her and her soon to be fat-a$$ kids when they starting having health issues relating to massive obesity.

my God that is just sickening.

then you have kids in 3rd world countries who are just skin and bones.

enough of the 'swine flu', it's time to declare childhood obesity a pandemic.

i recently had my 5 yr old to see his surgeon (operation when he was born, well....5 yrs ago). anyhoo, to make a long story short, I wanted to know if my son needed to see an endocrinologist to ensure his body is absorbing what it can. The surgeon said not to worry b/c ht/wt is mostly genetics and my wife and I are smaller ppl. My son is only 31 lbs so I was a bit worried.

The point of my story: our surgeon is a very easy going nice guy and he got the most disgusted, upset look on his face when he said, "You know, we have so many kids at the far end of the scale who are badly overweight, that we need to worry about that before your son."

And this is a surgeon who works at a children's hospital so he sees it all.

very sad.

No one suggested he was obviously a "bad person" for getting to be fat in the first place.

However, here is a woman — who I'll bet none of us know personally — and even with the reported fact that she has lost well over an adult's body weight she is still judged by her past.
Why the disbelief that she just may be on the right track?
If she had gained 11 stone since it might be a different story.

I just don't get people sometimes…
Ironically that same person showed no remorse in this thread.

I think it's great if she is on the right track, but I think were it became a bit more shocking was the idea that she was giving her kids pre-chewed McDonald's and teaching them that big is beautiful. Big is dangerous in all actuality.

Maybe considering the source many of us should have taken this story with a grain of salt, but you know what they say about salt intake.

Oddly enough, mommy birds chew food for the kids, and they often feed them at McDonald's too!
but you know how birds eat! :D

I mentioned no names, just made a general and apposite observation.
Oh, so non-committal finger pointing at the finger pointing?

O.K. from what I can figure out,Closer magazine (Bauer London Lifestyle previously Emap brought from one R Murdoch ) approaches Leanne Salt to do a interview about her weight loss since giving birth to her triplets. Closer magazine stitches her up, she denies having said what is attributed to her,in quote marks,by the magazine. Story is picked up (brought ) by the Scum and Sky (prop R Murdoch ) using the original story only no further investigation. The Telegraph (Barclay brothers ) jumps on board followed by trashy papers around the world, all this without anything other than the Closer article, only the Coventry News talks to the person involved. So far no serious paper has reported on the story. Now given this woman has some problems the story is slanted beyond belief. I hope nobody who's posted here becomes a target for this type of tabloid attack:
Ever been on a protest: violent unwashed hippie/Anarchist
Seen a therapist for any reason: mentally unhinged
Not been to Eton and have a first from Oxbridge in Classics: Chav
Have been to Eton and have a first in Classics from Oxbridge: Trustafarian spending daddies money
You get the drift. Truly a lie is halfway round the world before the truth gets it"s shoes on.

Joking over...

I think really what she does and doesn't do is nobody's business but her own, as long as she is not hurting anyone in the process. And that's where I would be worried. Children who grow up in homes where there serious nutritional issues, usually end up with the same nutritional problems as adults. Is it child abuse ? Possibly, i'm not an expert, but in this case I think Social Services really should look into the story.

I came up with an idea of harvesting fat people... work colleagues like it but I fear it'll never see the light of day.

No hormonal imbalance can lead to that amount of weight gain.
That's all PC mumbo-jumbo to explain away why fat people are fat: they eat much more than they need.

Sure, there are slow metabolisms, and there are hormonal imbalances which can cause someone to be more prone to weight gain. But morbid obesity is due to pigging out. Nobody, not even with total lack of TSH secretion due to a pituitary macroadenoma, who eats only green salad is going to become morbidly obese.

And yes, I am a doctor and well-acquainted with the field of endocrinology.

But it's so much more fun to point and laugh. And it takes the attention off one's own failings, which is always therapeutic.

+2

but you have to eat 400+lbs of food to weigh 400lbs.

now consider the bathroom, sweating and the continual firing of neurons. you have to eat ALOT of food to continually gain weight to the point she was and still is at.

some people do have metabolic issues which make eating 1lb of food make 1lb of fat (very untechnical i know)...she's definitely not one of these cases.

What really worries me is that she actually has children. I mean, what sort of sane male is going to go anywhere near anything like that, let alone sleep with it?

The Sun said:
She now dresses them just one day a week when she goes out to collect her dole money.

Well that says it all. And in just over 15 years those kids will all be chavving it up at the Job Centre, signing on and blagging Council Houses as they've managed to get pregnant at 15. And thus the cycle begins again.

Unfortunately, I have to witness this sort of thing daily in my city as I'm surrounded by it.

That sort of attitude is quite simply disgusting. 'thing' and 'it'? Don't forget that you are referring to another human being.

Frankly, whether you are a Doctor or not is irrelevant, as you know nothing about this particular case (other than an article in the Sun of course). I'm inclined to ignore someone who enters a discussion with such an arrogant statement followed up by 'I am a doctor' anyway. I certainly didn't feel the need to exemplify my argument by stating my background.

I didn't state hormonal imbalance specifically because, well that's a huge can of worms. I also wasn't referring to TSH secretion either. I specifically mentioned pituitary adenomas as being a cause of obesity, which they are.

I have seen it first hand.

You've studied bad science, I'm afraid.

And you know this how?

The Biggest Loser. ;) Besides, you tend to lose small percentages of your weight rather than a certain amount. If the woman weighed around 40 stone, a 2% loss in body weight, which is going to be far more weight than 2% of my own body weight.

My friend has lost a lot of weight, although much slower nowadays. He weighed around 35 stone before.

Take a look at the picture of her – that's 29 stones. ;)

14lbs = 1 stone, so this woman weighs in at around 406lbs – I think US lbs are slightly different to Englandshire lbs, but you get the picture.

By way of comparison, I'm a 6'2" boy and I weigh in at a shade under 12 stone – so she weighs two-and-a-half-time what I do. Cripes.

Since 1963 the UK has been using the international pound, so the US & UK pounds are equivalent. Everytime one says "stone" to somebody from the US to describe weight, they generally laugh in confusion. I think they have some image of Brits loading up heavy rocks in a giant scale to weigh ourselves... :p

Still we should all use metric anyway. It is significantly better.
