the majority of cameras (yes including the ones they give away) have 1.3 MP. majority makes the standard.

pretty much every cell phone at the same price level with iphone has at least 3.2mpix camera with auto focus and flash. that's the standard iphone is (and should be) compared to.

Thank you. We're not comparing the iPhone to Pantech freebies. It's an expensive boutique phone, and thus needs to be judged against others in its class, not 'the standard'. It should exceed the standard.

It should do. Might do this time. Till then, The Carl Zeiss lenses and Nokia cameras seem to have set a decent standard Apple hasn't yet reached. Heck, the Flip seems to be ahead of Apple at the moment. Isn't Video standard? Or is Jobs going to suprise v1. iPhone users with it this year as a freebie...

I would rather they keep the camera the megapixel count the same and improve on the optics than vice versa. Thing how cool it would be to have some form of optical zoom. You could pinch the camera app to zoom and it would respond as if it was any other picture in your photo album. Cool, no?

yea it would be nice too bad it doesnt though

I think the only phones with a decent camera is the SE K800i, k810i and k850i
these all have xenon flashes and give reasonable quality. From what I have seen from the Nokias the Zeiss lens is just a marketing gimmick as the quality is poor. It is down mainly to the tiny optics and small sensor which means more noise. The more pixels they cram onto the small sensor means less surface area per pixel and less light per pixel and more noise overall. I think it's a phone not a camera the 2Mp camera on the iPhone is suitable as a camera on a phone for uploading pics to facebook etc. For acceptable quality I use my DSLR but maybe I'm a bit fussy about image quality.

Well, I've moved from a N95 to the 3G iPhone and obviously the camera isn't anywhere near as good as the Nokia. The picture quality isn't bad at all with the N95 and compares well with the K850i, especially with the latest firmware upgrades. My brother has the N82 and that is even better due to the xenon flash.

While phone cameras are never going to replace a proper camera, recent Sony, Nokia & Samsung phones have proved that they don't have to be awful quality. The iPhone camera is ok when the light is good, but as soon as it starts to get dark it is next to useless.

I agree about megapixels and small sensors and 2 - 3 MP is plenty for a phone but I hope the next iPhone has a better quality lens with autofocus and a xenon flash.

I'll also be sticking with my DSLR for acceptable quality. :)

The total size of all the photos on your iPhone/Touch is somehow a lot more than the total of the same photos on your PC/Mac, and usually at a lot lower res, which I find hard to fathom.
