I already have the mid 2015. I primarily use the computer for video editing and often find that I am running out of space. I know I can use external hard drives. But I prefer to have the convenience of not carrying another item as I'm always on the go.

I have a Mid 2015 Retina. I was considering a new touchbar retina but don't like them much given their new design and adapter situation for peripherals.

So if I want 2TB, is it worth $1200 ($1000 on Ebay)

Does this pretty much future proof my mac for many years to come?
Any opinions are appreciated!

Do the 960 Pro work without adapters in your mid 2015? It's a great SSD, I run the 1TB in a deskside unit. But, always worry about reliability, and future support if an adapter is involved.

As part as your 2015 future proofing goes, I do not see USB-A peripherals disappearing for a long time. But, the 2018 15" is likely to have a hex core CPU which will likely be 30-40% faster. Hopefully they will get faster GPUs to match.

Do you think you will be constantly using in excess of 1tb storage over the period you’d keep the computer? That’s the only way of saying whether it’s worth it or not to get the 2tb built in, otherwise offloading little used stuff from a 1tb machine should probably work ok

A standard PCIe drive (like the 960 Pro) won't work in the 2015 MBP without an adapter. Furthermore, because it's NVMe, it won't work unless you use High Sierra. There's a long thread on this at:

(the title is 2013-2014 but it also deals with the 2015 as well). There are also companies that now sell an SSD that will fit into the 2015 MBP without using an adapter but you need to use High Sierra.

Honestly, i don't think it future proofs it. Nor even getting a 2017 with that kind of space future proofs it.
It's just i imho don't think its right to throw an extra $1200 on a 2015 machine. Hmmm

Tough choice. I know that the external SSD are around 500MB per sec and not as fast as internal, specially the MBP Samsung ones. But i would, get external honestly. Unless you really love and want to keep the 2015 keyboard for a long time. An external HDD or SSD has more flexibility, it can serve different machineS and different OS.

Personally i would stick to carrying an external SSD and save some money. If you decide to update your system you already have a usb-c/thunderbolt/usb 3.1 SSD that can serve you other computers. That, or buying a Touchbar model, that also shaves you pounds in carrying weight.

NOTHING is ultimately "future proof". It all falls by the wayside eventually (like us).

If you want to spend the exorbitant amount of money Apple charges for 2tb drive, it's really your choice.

No one here can answer that for you.

If you need the storage, go for it. If you don't, don't. It won't be any more "future-proof" than anything else.

Nothing future proof about a soldered SSD I’m afraid - and that’s being optimistic.
