3.0 and getting mms to work?

will i be able to update carrier settings on 3.0? i have my phone working so i can use tethering on my laptop. i dont want to upgrade 3.1 because i see alot of people are having problems.
so my question is can i keep 3.0, update carrier settings and still have tethering working

If you update the carrier you will have MMS but tethering will stop working.

I used the benm hack long time ago. I'm on 3.0.1 with tethering and mms. Jailbroken.
