3.0 makes me think no "HUGE" update to the actual iPhone this year...

there are tons of things apple can upgrade for the new iphone. just cuz there's new software doesn't mean there can't be new hardware. imgaine they announce a 32gb upgrade, thinner size, better screen resolution, faster processor, more memory, higher res camera, longer battery life. with that, i'm sold on those features, which are highly likely this summer.

and in the end, i'm just glad 3.0 is available on the iphone 3G if upgrade costs too much.

All I'm thinking is -

- different body style (matte finish). Still plastic and same size/shape (generally) though
- maybe better camera
- 32 gigs
- maybe better battery
- maybe new colours
- maybe some 'invisible' upgrades to memory and clockspeed, to match the 2nd gen Touch

And that's it.

If there isn't at least a storage bump, I'm going to cry bloody murder. It would be almost as sinful as Nintendo twiddling its thumbs with no extra internal storage even though they keep pushing a bunch of big WiiWare titles they want people to buy. My 8GB iPhone is beyond full, and if nifty apps keep coming out, I'm going to need even more space. Am I expected to not carry music at some point? I have already ditched all but a couple of photos and all videos. Arrgh.

Are you aware that there is currently a 16GB iPhone available?

Apple will make the upcoming third generation iphone very hard for existing
iphone users to resist.

It's going to be very much like the typical computer buying decision.
Yes, the old one works alright, but the new one does this and that and is
faster. I have a feeling the new design will be quite different and very cool.

And most know they will hate buying it, but they will buy it.

I'm willing to bet this upgrade (3G to summer '09 model) will be less of a jump spec-wise than the first upgrade was (OG iPhone to 3G).

Im disappointed as well, i was hoping for a smidgen of info about a new iPhone.

I realize that the dollar drives the market however, and to leak info about a possible upgrade will impact sales of the current model.

It still pisses me off though :D

Yeah, it pisses me off when I go to a software event and they don't talk about hardware. I mean, what were they thinking?

Plus the original iPhone owners will be coming off their contracts this summer

That is not as big a factor in a hardware update as you would imagine, because as an AT&T customer for years, I know 2 things.

First, even on a Family plan, all AT&T customers can upgrade their device after 18 months as long as they sign again for another 2 years. You never actually go the 2 years unless you decide to switch carriers. This includes the iPhone (which even though has it's own rules, still counts in the upgrade schedule)

Second, many iPhone users who have their own line and spend over $100 a month are allowed to upgrade after 12 months if they re-sign for another 2 years.

Your absolutely right.....and you've just given me buyer's remorse 4 months before I buy the thing!

I dont care if they allow existing 3G users a free upgrade, if they come out with a NEW phone, I'm buying it. I'm already saving my pennies.

As money for me will be tight this summer I really need to do my best and not upgrade. I know I can sell my iPhone 3G for quite a bit but it is doing fine. The 16GB cap is also alright as I have my PB12" everywhere I go.

I just hope there aren't any killer apps that require new hardware.

^ i agree with u, but unless the iphone that comes out looks and has lots of better stuff. than forget it lol. im gonna try and resist.

Blue Sky? Think Snow Leopard, in a phone, on custom chips, that could do Grand Central. Apple could go aggressive on this one - the OS 3.0 launch certainly was.

"Core Innovation" Potentially one of the cheekiest puns i've seen for a while.

OS 3.0 has a great effect - It's the pass me down effect. That means more people get to try Apple. You sell the phone on, or pass to a friend, relative etc. Knowing that OS 3 will keep the v1, v2 iPhone's in good stead, they're creating a user base rivaling the numbers for XBox 360.

Think Tegra, but for Apple. Think one more hardware thing.

Then remove about 5 useful things that other phones do.
