What you need to do, is after you get your ipod touch into DFU mode, is to get it into "pre-jailbreak" mode.

This is when your iPod touches screen goes from black (DFU mode) to white (pre-jailbreak).

There are currently no GUI ways of doing this on a mac, so I suggest QuickFreedom for windows. It will create a custom iPod Touch firmware for you (which you should use to restore it to 2.2.1 first, then restore it to the original 2.2.1 version after), and guide you how to put your ipod into DFU mode. It will then do the pre-jailbreak setup for you, and then tell you when you can use itunes to update your ipod.

I only suggest this, because this is how I got my ipod touch downgraded from 3.0, and because nobody else here had mentioned (or at least I didn't see it) the white "pre-jailbreak" screen.

There is a way of doing the pre jailbreak mode with a mac, but you need to use terminal...blah blah blah...i can't seem to find the youtube video I got it from, so I still suggest using QuickFreedom, if you have a windows PC lying around of course.

Well i looked into the Quickfreedom program, it says its for the 2nd Generation Ipod Touch, I have a 1g. But thanks for the suggestion..

EDIT:

I think i'll go ahead and download it and run it, see if it recognizes my ipod

2nd EDIT:

I does recognize my ipod, which is nice. Ofcorse how ever it only works with the 2nd gen firmware.

I does recognize my ipod, which is nice. Ofcorse how ever it only works with the 2nd gen firmware.

I'm back to 3 now, its not 2.0, my sleep button doesnt work, and standby causes looping apple screen needing a good itunes plugin or ihome plugin., but its better than nothing.

I believe for the 1st gen, what you need to do is get it into DFU mode, then run QuickPwn.

you'd think but quick pwn wont recognize it unless you plug it in turned on.. out of dfu mode.atleast for me.

PLUS,

getting to DFU mode is a little sketchy. The only way I've found is to simply hold the home button until the ipod resets(with out the ever touching the sleep button) and then after it resets and itunes recognizes it, i then let go of home and start to repeatedly push sleep until it goes into DFU. I can then unplug and replug with the black screen staying and it being recognized imediately instead of it waiting for the ipod to load.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

all help is appreciated

I know that this may not be the best idea... but you could always pay the money to get into the Dev program... you would have access to future betas and you wouldn't waste your ipod touch. I'm not trying to criticize you for installing 3, im just trying to give a helpful suggestion if worst comes to worst...

Huh???? I don't think that would put the Touch into DFU, as far as I can figure out, all that would do is put it to sleep.

First of all, the home button is the round button on the front of the ipod, under the screen. The sleep button is the silver switch jutting out at the top, right?

Holding down the home button by itself doesn't do anything, no matter how long I hold it down.

Holding down the sleep button by itself for several seconds brings up the "slide to turn off" screen.

Holding both the home and sleep buttons down together for long enough turns off the ipod.

Here's how I enter DFU mode.

1. Connect ipod to computer.
2. Hold both home and sleep down, until the ipod shuts off.
3. KEEP HOLDING HOME while you let go of sleep. (This is crucial, you can't let go of home.)
4. Keep holding home until quickpwn or itunes recoginizes your ipod.

If you read through this whole thread, you'll notice that you aren't the first to list your way of going into dfu mode. If you did some research on google, you'd find that your way is only one in like about 45. Sorry to say but i've only tried your way and every other way for the past how ever many days. My arm is honestly sore from holding home and sleep. And like i've said before, it doesnt work, so there for qwkpwn isn't going to work. But again thanks for your suggestion. anything and everything is appreciated.

Actually i've considered this, but i'm not a dev and I feel like it'd be a waste.

45! I think I counted only about 32! :D

Sorry you are having such a hard time going into DFU. I guess we all keep thinking if we give it one more go, you'll attain succes...

Well, glad you are finding this so amusing. But you were saying the home button did something I'd never seen it do, so I thought I better check to see that we were talking about the same button. Sorry about mistaking the color of the power switch, I was looking at an iPhone when I typed that. (My Touch's battery hasn't been holding charge very well, so I've been borrowing my partner's iPhone.)

lol i was just kidding. Ya nothing like a malfunctioning ipod to make things fun(mine was FUBAR since before I even jailbroke it.) (Sent to apple twice and all they said was they couldnt recreate the problems) So thats when I finally decided to jailbreak it.

ofcorse now its way way way later and i'm where i am now.. hmm.. no telling where i'll be in the FUTURE!!

Hey, OP, when you got the ipod to start restoring, but it failed, did it sit on the "Restoring iPod" where it has the progress bar on the ipod screen?
just asking becouse all this happened to me....

Good luck, if you install the 3.0 beta the iphone/ipod is locked in testing mode. I think DFU mode is the only way to restore it :S

Dang, lol I was sort of hoping this wasn't the case. i mean i can't and won't complain, i still have it sort of working.

Do you think it would be possible for the testing mode to either deactivate or cause the sleep button to stop working? For me it doesnt work at all, with the minor exception that it sometimes will cause the screen to go off while in recovery mode(my version of dfu, but it hasn't restored to 2.x yet so i'm not thinking that its in dfu mode actually, just looks like it is)

thanks for you suggestion, any and every one are appreciated

Here's something new. It's now showing up in recovery mode with itunes while still showing the apple logo on the device.hmmmm

EDIT:

I decided to go back through all the different ways of restoring. I am using the quickpwn method, and when i first run it it ask me to hold home and sleep for 15 secs and then just sleep for 2 secs, well i did it this time, and it took my ipod out of restore mode and back to 3.0. Just thought i'd mention this.

EDIT2:

I tried restoring with itunes(again) and this time after it failed and stopped, I unplugged the device as i normally would, then I plugged it back in and it went to the all black screen while showing recovery mode in itunes.

So I am suicidal and totally depressed, this has been me all day since 7:00am and here I am totally crushed, calls to Apple, and got nothing but slapped down!

I am a paid up developer and downloaed the itunes pre release, the sdk and the os for 3.0 beta 4.

All went well and I managed to deploy some sample apps and was happy. But then no connection to Xcode or iTunes!

I have tried ALL day again and again and agin and I get no where.

I think I am in DFU mode but not sure? I follow the instructions and get the pink screen with cable and itunes logo and iteuns says in recovery mode.

I try to straight restore, select 3.0 file to restore, select 2,2,1 file to restore but all end the same....error 21!

Another way I have tried is holding down keys in set order and then itunes says waiting for ipod but then errors saying device connected but cant identify.

Please somebody help me, I bought this phone in January for £400 and now I have a brick and am pancaking !

Please can anyone help me, all I want to do is go back to 2.2.1 and wish I had never started with 3!

I have tried all the steps here to no avail, even disconnecting the net, but the iTunes reports no internet connection, cant connect to ipod server!

If I do get to DFU all I get is error 2001 device unidentified!

This is a 100% legal fully paid up device I have registered with my dev account. I do not want to jailnbreak it, I just want to get the thing back to 2.2.1

I'm in the exact situation as you. I tried the 3.0 beta and now I'm stuck in restore mode. When I try to use quickpwn it says the firmware isn't compatible. I tried using 3.0 and 2.2.1 but it won't take either one. With itunes, it'll restore it with 3.0 but when it's done it says itunes can't recognize my ipod. I tried restoring it with 2.2.1 but it fails.

I was just wondering because I was once in the developer program, doesn't Apple have a mailing list (You had to be willing to be in it) of developers for iPod Touch/iPhone? It's been years since I have been in the program so they may not do this any more.

I don't own an iPod Touch/iPhone to help you other then if they do have a mailing list, try asking your question though the list. Maybe other Dev can help you. (Thinking of getting one though)

I was brave and took my ipod to the apple store to see if they could fix it. The guy said that apple had locked my ipod because I wasn't in the developer's program and I wouldn't be able to restore my ipod until the official software is released. He looked like the type of jerk who wouldn't fix it just to spite me though. I'm still working on getting my ipod going.

Same problem but I figured it out. For me this worked on my touch2...

1. white screen DFU (pre-jailbreak).
2. immediately connect to a windows PC with itunes open but have the internet DISCONNECTED.
3. shift-click restore and select 2.2.1

I tried everything else with out success.
