Summer? That's ages away.

This release was just to get developers ready for the release in summer so when 3.0 is officially released the apps can utilize all the new features. If you want you can pay $99 to sign up for the developer program and get it now, but it is only a beta and you can't go back to 2.x, so you would have to wait until 3.0 to get a completely stable iPhone OS anyway.

Just out of curiosity, if you pay the $99 to become a developer and install the 3.0 beta on a iPod Touch 2G will you still have to pay the $10 to upgrade to the official 3.0 release?

Who knows? Probably.

bluetooth networking

now touchs can establish IP connection,
can anybody confirm that ipod touch can connect to the internet only through bluetooth?
this is very easy to accomplish in terms of technology (AFAIK)... it's just a routing problem, but Apple may not have enabled it yet...

Yea, and they mentioned Bonjour over Bluetooth, which is new to the Apple platform -- I don't think it exists on 10.4 or 10.5...

I don't know it's that big of a deal, as you could always to Ad-Hoc Wi-Fi networking as Rev does to the WiFi OBD-II Adapter for your car...

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO COOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D Beta FTW!!!!!!!!!

Works like a charm with my BT headphones, no controls, but the music sounds 100% cooler than any iPod Apple has ever made before! :D:D:D:D:D

I too have this, and have noticed that the Voice Memo app is NOT there. I heard it is present on the iPhone though. Yours doesn't have it either?

I've got 3.0 on my 1st gen Touch (developer), and with no bluetooth, mic, or speaker I'm having a hard time appreciating it's worth. It seems to have slowed down the Touch UI, probably using cycles watching for push notifications.

That's too bad. I've had a few issues too, but a restart only takes a minute and clears everything up like nothing. Make sure to do that regularly, especially when running such an early build. Compounding problems can lead to very bad things (like needing to restore your device), and turning it off and on should clear up most problems.

Nope, but there are so many apps that duplicate that functionality, it's not really such a big loss, is it? I like using Note2Self personally, and I would likely never use Apple's Voice Memo app even if I had it.

aaahh i feel like i should of gotten the 2G now which sucks because at the time the 1G seem perfect plus my 1G is jailbroken which mean i have all customize from keyboard to layout to the icons everything... but just the fact of the bluetooth and other things just seem pretty cool..

should i sell my 1G and get a 2G or like i heard someone around wait til around septemberishh and maybe they might come out with a 3G ipod touch?

At this point both options are good, but waiting for the new version (if you can handle it) would be the best in my opinion. Still, having the first legit iPod with bluetooth, dongle free, is something I could never muster the patience to wait for. Whatever you choose, GL!

To upgrade to 3.0 there is a $10 charge. Rumors state that the 3G will be released in September. If that happens, will it come with the 3.0 firmware built it?

Basically i just want to know if I should pay the $10 or wait to get the new Touch, if it comes with the 3.0 then why pay the $10!

It should come with the firmware built-in, Apple always installs the newest firmware on their new products before selling them. The second generation iPod touch came with a version of 2.0 on it, so it follows that the third gen will include 3.0.

It did look cool in the demo, and I do recall apple saying that they would add it to the iPod touch 2G and iPod nano 4G with the new headphones. That never happened, so I thought this is their chance.

Yeah, but it wouldn't be such a big deal, since there are so many apps already out that do the exact same thing. You know you can use any microphone with a four contact connector, right? Apple's headphones w/mic are way overpriced, if you are going to use your iPod to record audio buy an adapter w/built-in mic from Amazon and use one of the hundred or so recording apps already on the store. ;)

Great! I had to pay the $10 for the 2G ipod. I guess i will wait for another 4 months for the 3G to come out, hopefully...

More like 6 months until the 3rd gen iPods come, if Apple follows pattern. Four months for 3.0.

This may be off topic, but when you upgrade the software on the iPod Touch, do you lose all your save data for games? I already lost all my save data when I got my iMac :( Although I'm sure there was a way to avoid that. For future reference, how do you go about making sure you don't lose save data with a new iMac? a new iPod?
