The 3.1 software includes an update for AT&T's carrier file. I think I heard that it goes from 4.0 to either 4.1 or 4.2

In this release, the MMS icon in messages will be enabled along with the ability to send the messages.

I have 3.1 beta and the Carrier file is AT&T 4.2. Still doesn't send MMS though.

tell him to give us MMS now! ;) opps he's not that high up! so in the end you wait kist like us! so we wait for 3.1 and will see what happens then!

Off Topic: You wrote this from your 3GS for sure... I have the same problem with trying to type "just" ...and it annoys me!

Anyhow, I'm ready for MMS to just freaking be available to us already! I'm using my phone camera now more often and it'd be nice to be able to send some of the pics to my friends/family!

the carrier file changed like 1 or 2 times during 3.0 beta and then again with release of GM. Maybe they'll do the same with 3.1 beta and GM.

On the release date of 3.1, I'm predicting somewhere within the next 2 weeks. If rumors are true that apple pushed 3.0 and the 3G S to compete with the Palm Pre, it would make sense for them to release the next update around the same time as they released the 1st gen and the 3G/2.0. Just a wild guess.

I have 6 gigs ....

and besides, don't you guys have a soft cap at 5 gigs anyhow?

Not with the iPhone. Phones on AT&T, probably all carriers, that have an unlimited data plan and tethering usually have the hidden 5GB cap. They don't want you replacing traditional broadband with their network.

Seems like in the US at least releasing 3.1 and MMS seems to be the easiest way to ensure everyone updates their carrier file as well...

They would probably keep the sweeps going until right before they release 3.1 publicly which in the US would include a new carrier file. 4.2 and announce that MMS is running so long as you upgrade to 3.1

That way when people start calling in to ATT saying why isn't it working. They can simply say upgrade your software to 3.1... its just they're way of idiot proofing it for those that never update their software

Maybe you guys can learn even from our crappiest carrier (MetroPCS) a simple concept like... unlimited data?

Have fun with your 1GB data

1GB of data? You should check your facts....Canadian's have 6GB of data....tethering or not I've never even came close to reaching 4GB.

We pay $30.00/mth for it.

and have unlimited sms/mms on certain packages, which also include VVM, CD, Who Called.

Are plans are quite costly, but the options aren't that bad here imho.

So take it or leave it if u wanna flame me then whatever. I have a friend whos dad is VERY high up in AT&T and he told me that there is about a 98 percent chance mms is coming with the 3.1 update. With that being said anyobe have any guesses or know wen 3.1 will hit?

I heard July 15th. Probably not true but I guess we'll know next week.

I do have my facts right.

I'm reading all of this off your website. It says right there $60 has 1GB of data included, if you want 6GB you gotta pay extra. Why Rogers can't just offer you guys unlimited data is beyond me, especially when a phone like this eats data like tic-tacs, or glosettes in your case ;).

I love Canadians, my girlfriend is Canadian, and its beyond me also why she doesn't like poutine; best stuff on earth

Yea, what I meant was when 3.1 is officially released, MMS should be enabled.

My guess is they currently have is disabled for the beta version of 3.1

I don't understand your logic. OS 3.0 enabled MMS, but the U.S. didn't get the proper carrier file. OS 3.1 will also have MMS, but if we don't get the carrier file, we'll still be w/o MMS. We'll get MMS when AT&T can supoort it. I don't think it has anything to do with Apple's release of OS 3.1 (just like it didn't with OS 3.0).

i say lets do a happy dance.

what they're trying to get at, is at&t is going to provide the carrier file with the 3.1 update. Being as it's a x.1 update and not simply a carrier file update might help most of the iphone community, who aren't as plugged in and worried about MMS, a lot faster and easier. Not everyone plugs there iPhone into iTunes or reads macrumor message boards everyday to see if there's an update.

So, you're saying Apple is going to work with AT&T this time? :)

Because that's the only way that logic makes sense, if Apple waits for AT&T to be ready. They didn't wait for AT&T with OS 3.0.

Does your friend's dad live in Tuscaloosa or Dallas?

I think it might be the other way around. I mean, if it was just a normal "bug fix" update it wouldn't be a x.1, it'd be like x.0.1 like we saw with 2.0 in august of last year.

Okay, I'm confused. You're saying that Apple tells AT&T what to do? AT&T had all that BS about not being ready or all the other stupid excuses that run rampant on here. So, when Apple is ready, all of a sudden AT&T will be ready? I could see Apple waiting for AT&T to get their act in gear, but I didn't think that was how Apple is, since they didn't wait with the 3.0 update.

Hey, I'm like 99% of this board, I don't really have a single clue what I'm talking about ;)

I just think that because its a x.1 update, it might have the carrier file included since Apple released both iphones and a major update in mid-july of the past two years. Maybe AT&T really WASN'T ready. Who really knows aside from Steve Jobs, and obviously this kids friends dad. He said, she said.

I think you guys are assuming that the OP thinks that MMS is dependent on 3.1 which we all know it is not. However, what if AT&T just wants to time MMS with the release of 3.1 to a) make it seem like the hold up was apple's fault b) provide an updated carrier setting file with 3.1 so that those who are less than tech saavy don't get confused about updating to 3.1 and then connecting to itunes at a later date for a carrier update file ("what's that?", my sister with an iphone would ask me...) and c) make the explanation simple for apple's marketing arm ("MMS will be available to US customers with the 3.1 update", rather than some convoluted explanation about carrier files and tech jargon).
