I didn't want to regret it, so I called back to Apple and went from the 3.2 QUAD to the 3.33 HEX. Crap, another $700 gone :(

My logic was this:

I bought my 2008 2.8x8 MP in January of 2009. I knew an update was imminent but the Apple store manager said I could bring it in and exchange with no restock if I wanted to. So I went with it and eagerly awaited the 2009s.

I didn't quite understand how multiple cores wasn't going to help my applications much (LR, PS, InDesign, etc) and when I saw the less than stellar 2.66ghz quad at almost the same price I paid for my 2008, I kept with mine and just upgraded RAM and later the GPU.

So from the get-go, it seemed like a somewhat temporary machine until I'd go big and get one that would last me 3 years.

Knowing I'd always regret the 3.2 QUAD over the HEX, I kept realizing I would want to upgrade again in 18 months or whenever . . . so I plan on keeping the 3.33 HEX for at least 2-3 years before an upgrade . . . or so I say :p

My gut says you did the right thing. It'll be faster and last longer.

I'm not a huge power user by any means but for me an iMac just won't cut it, you can't even upgrade to a 5870 in the BTO...

That said, I'm also torn between the hex and the quad, and I'm thinking I'll be happier with the hex in the long run. Worth the extra 700 I think, especially if when benchmarks come around the difference is huge.

Can anyone comment on how loud these video cards will run (or comment on the noise on the previous Mac Pros)? These cards seem awfully powerful and big on power consumption, especially the 5870. Will the fan noise be a bit overpowering?

A noise is something of an issue for me as well, I prefer silent systems, and as far as I know apple does too. It is my understanding that usually MacPros are relatively quiet even under loads, so hopefully the 5870 in the new MPs will adhere to current, acceptable standards.

Real noise level tests will only be known once 2010 MPs will start getting delivered.

I have an ATI Radeon 5870 in my MacPro 2009 and noise is really acceptable. It's not noisier than the original Geforce GT 120 except for 30 seconds on startup, when the pci expansion bay fan runs at 2000 rpm.

Had to make the same choice a few weeks ago and got the 8core 2.4, with CS5 going 64bit and some plugin upgrades it is perfect, getting a nice 1450% CPU use when compressing with Adobe compressor. So works out great, had cash left to put in 32Gig memory and a Nvidia Quadro 4000. Using it for video 99.9% of the time.

Random question, but how loud is it??
