I'm On A Xeon 3580 Now

Well, I replaced my Core i7 w/ a Xeon W3580 and performed a few sleep/logout/login cycles without issue. However, when I logout the desktop is cleared of icons but seems to linger for a while before the logout is completed. I'm able to login again without issues so far, but I am getting errors in my console:

10/1/09 7:02:37 PM com.apple.loginwindow[356] Thu Oct 1 19:02:37 sonnys-mac-pro loginwindow[356] <Warning>: CGSShutdownServerConnections: Detaching application from window server

10/1/09 7:02:45 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[147] (com.apple.ReportCrash) Falling back to default Mach exception handler. Could not find: com.apple.ReportCrash.Self

I'm not sure what these mean, but it does appear that loginwindow and WindowServer are having some issues since they are indicating warnings and errors. Is this normal behavior? I've cleared all non-Apple preference panes, startup items, and removed all launch daemons and contextual menu items.

Do you think a re-install of SL is in order?

Cpu Temps

I am seeing my CPU temps under light load hovering 4-5C cooler than with the Core i7. Core i7 would idle at 38-39C, Xeon 3580 is idling at around 33-34C. This is definitely good news, but a 4-5C difference in temps would not in itself account for issues with the Core i7. It's still a mystery, but I will report back over the next few days as I continue using the system.

Sounds like you did a better application of thermal paste. with the i7 975 my temps are the same, unless I'm playing music.. LOL.

How do I get to NETKAS' z CPU-Z? You appear to be on to something. Netkas is who I've being thinking about for the last couple of days as the possible source for a solution.

THIS MESSAGE IS FOR TUTOR:

Apologies for the unorthodox method of contact. Although, I've gathered much from the amazingly informative forums here, I have an urgent and specific question to ask you. I can send you my email if need be. Please PM me at your earliest convenience. Thank you!

* Apparently, my PM functionality was not yet working at the time I posted the above message. I read the FAQ, and all is working now. Ahh the joys of being a new member.

Hey Tutor....

I believe this is what the doctor ordered. It has everything about speedstep, setting voltages, multipliers, etc.

From what i've read, the ktext is fully editable and it looks like the values can be manipulated after boot as in the other example.

There are tools for monitoring it.... etc... I spent an hour but need to jump back to writing...

What the technology is about...

the forum where it is discussed

a couple ktexts to modify it

Thx!

Thanks. You put Sherlock Holmes to shame. I'll fully explore these leads this weekend.

Thx! If it's on the internet... I usually can find it and usually it's just a matter of time. In my sleuthing... I found that CPU-i causes a kernel panic after the KTEXT is installed... MSR tools shows voltage and current CPU speed, but for only 2 cores... I'm looking for one that shows all 4.

Oh well.. i guess I did the paste wrong on my 3.33 processor!

Hey nano,

Can you explain why then is my system working normally even though I applied a pea size amount of the heat sink on the heat spreader and used a credit card with ragged edge to spread it ALL OVER the integrated heat spreader? I am not sure why everyone is telling me I did this wrong.. I am not dumb when it comes to these things.. a processor is a processor and for me, using a small thin coat of paste to cover the entire surface is better since this is how I did my upgrades with powerpc upgrades on the mirror drive door and the purple core was a lot smaller..

So, if everyone is saying i did it wrong, then why is my machine working great then?

No cause for concern, just wanting to know why everyone is telling me i did it wrong?

Yours is rather centered. ;) :D :p

I'm a fan of "works well with little effort" school of thinking. :p

I've even gone thought the effort of spreading it with a plastic bag over the end of a finger and credit card methods. Not any discernable difference when it was done correctly. If incorrect, it's worse.

So the "centered pea dollop" seems to be the best of the bunch IMO. :D

I had read your advice (Roman23) as well as looked for numerous other sources on the internet, YouTube, tech articles, etc about applying thermal paste. The consensus (99%) of what I read recommends your method of applying a small bead of paste on the center of the IHS and spreading it over the surface of the IHS using a business card or credit card (or other spreader) to form a very thin layer which completely covers the IHS. Care must be used not to glob or leave excess around the edges which can seep into the processor. The "thin spread layer" method seems to be the most accepted method and the one recommended by most. Also it doesn't take alot (just a small amount of paste) and then spread it all over the IHS in a very thin layer.

Thanks..

Its good to be right again :)
